1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a cold winter evening, I was terrified that my mom would find out that I had lost the beautiful silver flute (长笛) she bought me. I felt very sad and I thought that she had given me a big lecture about how valuable it was and that I had to take good care of it. Now it was missing! And I felt very upset. I was only ten at the time, so it felt like a huge responsibility. So I didn’t dare tell my mum about it, I didn’t think my mum would pay attention to my flute.

Mum was a soft-spoken woman who never yelled at me, but she would surely have docked (扣除) my allowance (零花钱) for a year or two in order to pay for it if I couldn’t find it and she discovered that my flute was lost. The worst punishment, though, would have been disappointing her and being forever regarded as an unreliable person.

As I was in the band, I would take the flute to school twice and bring it home after practice. That day, I normally remembered collecting it after school and then I rushed through the school gate, I even said bye to the guard. But when I returned home and wanted to take my flute for practice, it was nowhere to be found.

Being afraid to tell anyone, I kept thinking to myself   “I’d be in big trouble if I lost it. What should I do?”

Just then, I heard my mum’s calling, “Sweetie, dinner is ready!”

“Okay, wait a minute, I…am …coming…” I replied as I slowly stepped out of my bed-room, my mind was still back in the state of searching for my flute.

When having dinner, I could hardly focus with my eyes. Although I tried to pretend to be calm, my mum still noticed it.

“What is the matter with you, sweetie?” my mum asked.

Hearing what she said, I had to tell her the truth.

3 . A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter Lisa failed a test. The grade might stop her from qualifying for the next class she wants to take. There were tears and some complaints for a few minutes. Then I saw something interesting. She made a joke, expressed gratitude that she didn’t have bigger problems, and finally made a plan on how to make improvements.

She was never the same as she was one year ago. That one was unwilling to take responsibility. That one stayed in anger and blamed others. We expect our kids to learn and grow. We hope for it. However, most of us grow through adversity (逆境), even trauma (精神创伤). It happened to Lisa last year repeatedly. She searched for ways to get her bearings and equip herself when everything around her was changing by the day. Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth.

Trauma refers to an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings. The growth after trauma doesn’t mean we get through challenges uninjured. It’s been a scary and painful time, for everyone, in one way or another. We may experience disbelief, depression, and even denial. As time moves on, people who have experienced trauma may have headaches or other physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and even relationship problems. Trauma does leave its irremovable marks.

However, in one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial difficulty during the pandemic. 88 percent of the people surveyed say they also have experienced some positive outcomes—They now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation of life.

1. What is Lisa like now when she fails?
A.She tries to cover it.
B.She is positive and adult.
C.She acts unconcerned.
D.She wants to make excuses.
2. What does the author intend to tell us through Lisa’s experience?
A.There is no sweet without sweat.
B.Experience is the father of wisdom.
C.Difficult situations are likely to make one stronger.
D.Responsibility is often more important than ability.
3. How does the author prove his view?
A.By analyzing existing data.
B.By quoting a psychologist.
C.By contrasting a person’s constant changes.
D.By giving examples together with study results.
4. Which of the following may the author agree with about post-traumatic growth?
A.It usually comes at a high price.
B.It produces little negative feelings.
C.It is one of the fastest ways to make improvements.
D.It is growth that does both good and harm.

Once upon a time, there was a young athletic boy who is really hungry for success. For him, winning was everything and success was measured just by winning. He practised hard every day to win every race lying ahead of him.

One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small village. A large crowd had gathered to witness the sporting event. A wise old man had travelled far to bear witness also. The race began. The boy with his determination, strength and power took the winning line and came to the first. The crowd were excited, cheering and waving at the boy. However, the wise man remained still and calm, expressing no excitement. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.

A second race was called and two new young fit challengers came forward to run with him. The race was started and sure enough the little boy came through and finished first. Once again the crowd was excited again, and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm again, expressing no excitement. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.

Another race, the wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers, an elderly weak lady and a blind man. “What is this?” the little boy was puzzled. “This is no race!” he claimed. “Race,” said the wise man.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Forgiveness is the most important tool humans have been blessed with. Because, with it, we can let go of unnecessary burdens and truly own our lives. And by doing that, you maybe make a friend. That was a lesson an eleven-year-old boy taught me when I was in my eighth grade.

When I was in the fifth grade, there was a boy in my class named Kyle. He was big and strong. Maybe he was kind inside. Maybe he was just good at pretending in face of adults. I said so because I happened to see him helping an old man who was so grateful that he couldn’t stop saying thanks to him.

However, to the children of his age, he was the meanest person I had ever met. For the first couple days of school, Kyle and I sat across from each other. Once, he secretly reached his legs across the table and slammed (猛踩) his shoe clown on mine, causing a rapid rush of pain. I stared at him angrily, but he just made faces to me. I chose to ignore him. I didn’t want to get involved into trouble because I was anxious to leave to see my brother. He suffered from a strange disease. Despite the fact that he was slow and had special needs, I loved him and couldn’t stand others laughing at him.

Kyle’s bullying (欺凌) went on. Eventually, I told a teacher, and my seat was moved. But Kyle’s abuse didn’t stop. He continued to call me names, such as “stupid”. His words were quite embarrassing to an eleven-year-old girl. He as continued to physically hurt me. In “morning meeting” he once stepped on my foot so hard that I burst into tears. This continued for most of the school year.

Kyle also bullied my friend Megan. At one point she ran out of the classroom because he copied her nonstop. Both of us were absolutely painful. And despite meetings with teachers and guidance counselors, nothing changed. We had a large class of noisy boys, and the teacher had a hard time keeping order.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议的文章。作者通过介绍自己的老师Miss Marquis对自己的影响,认为一个好的老师应该要做到尊重和鼓励学生。

7 . Miss Marquis was my mentor (导师) when I was 12 and she’s my mentor now as a teacher.

My family moved to the UK from Saudi Arabia in 2017. When I started school there, I didn’t have a great understanding of the English language. Thankfully, I had an amazing teacher called Miss Marquis who helped me get through it. She pushed me all the way and gave me the right guidance.

During my teacher training with ARK, I was given a place at Globe Academy in London as a math teacher. When I saw the head of the English department was Miss Marquis, my jaw (下巴) dropped. It was unbelievable.

I still can’t call her by her first name. The respect I have for her is still there. In one of the lessons I observed she was reading the same book we used in our GCSEs and it took me back to the days when I was being taught by her. You knew you could go to her and share your problems. At the same time, you would never mess about in her lesson. Misbehaving was simply not done.

My aim as a teacher is affected by her. Teaching is about the mark you make on other people’s lives. I’ve worked in a few different schools during my training but I chose ARK because it gives opportunities to children who may not be from wealthy backgrounds. I am trying to have an impact on these people.

It doesn’t matter how many books you read, and nothing can prepare you for your first lesson. I have read all the theories about how to manage behavior but a lot of them just go out of my head when I walk into the classroom because they’re not robots. They’re all unique individuals and you can’t control them. You need to put the work in and build relationships with the students.

1. When did the author get to know Miss Marquis?
A.When he began school in a totally new place.
B.When he worked as a guide at an English school.
C.When he experienced difficult situations in ARK.
D.When he arrived in Saudi Arabia with his family.
2. What was the author’s reaction upon seeing Miss Marquis at ARK?
A.Embarrassed.B.Puzzled.C.Amused.D.Shocked.
3. Which of the following best describes Miss Marquis?
A.Cold and selfish.B.Kind but strict.
C.Gentle but careless.D.Energetic and friendly.
4. What should a good teacher do according to the author?
A.To be devoted to his/her teaching career.
B.To be equipped with enough knowledge.
C.To respect and encourage his/her students.
D.To be well prepared for his/her first lesson.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ariana Porter was very excited. Tomorrow will be a new day and a new beginning, well, kind of. Tomorrow Ariana will go to a boarding school! No little sister to share a room with, peace and quiet. She ate her favourite homemade curry for the last time that year. Then, she curled up in her clean bed and shut her eyes. Excited.

The next day, Ariana woke up, jumped into her best clothes and flew downstairs. After a quick breakfast, the whole family lined up and said their goodbyes. Ariana’s little sister tried to hug her, but she shrugged Liliana off. And off she went to boarding school. Happy.

However, when Ariana got there, everyone looked unwelcoming. A teacher showed her to her dorm. It was cold and dark! A few days later, Ariana got several letters. The rainbow one was from her little sister and another from her parents. Ariana couldn’t even be bothered to open them. She just threw them into the main hall’s fireplace when nobody was around.

Every day, Ariana tried to make friends. It was an allgirls school. Unfortunately, she had no luck. She tried to give girls gifts, she tried to be friendly, but they shrugged her off just like she did to her sister. Two months passed trying to find new friends, but without success. Ariana felt more and more lonely. Something was missing in her life. Something indescribable. Something, or maybe someone.

Week after week went by and then, one day, holding yet another batch of mail, Ariana’s heart trembled. She realized what she was painfully missing, her FAMILY. Whenever she was down, whenever she needed help or comfort, they were there for her. Always. This time she opened the little rainbow envelope and smiled. Reading it filled her heart with joy. Ariana couldn’t reply, for the school didn’t allow that, so she decided to hide the letters under her pillow. The pile grew larger and they were so important to her, for the letters gave her the greatest comfort when she was away from home.

Months passed eagerly waiting for the day when the school year ends. No more dorm life and unfriendly girls. Ariana skipped to math class excitedly, but couldn’t concentrate, she dreamed about going home.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是艺术的重要性。
10 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Do you believe that art can change our world? In a study     1    (conduct) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), researchers found that people with an active interest in the art contribute more to society than those with little or no interest in     2    . That means if you sing, dance, draw, or act, and especially if you watch others do so, you’re     3    (likely) to be socially responsible, tolerant and altruistic (无私的).

Kelly Leroux, an assistant professor at UIC who takes charge     4     the study, says, “Our data analysis has found a high correlation between the arts and altruistic actions—like donating blood,or doing favors for a neighbor,     5     place the interests of others over the interests of self,” she said. “    6     this, people who have interests in the arts are more willing to take part in activities, such as volunteering.”

Because the financial crisis still lasts, arts budgets     7    (reduce) very soon. However, this policy will take such important benefits away from students. Just as LeRoux says,     8     policymakers are worried about a decline in community life, the arts should not be disregarded as     9     effective means to promote social     10    (responsible).
