It was my first class as a new teacher. A little girl,     1     looked very shy, was standing at the gate of the classroom.

I walked up to her and asked what was wrong with her,     2     she said nothing. Then a boy shouted, “She is from Grade Four and is the     3    (bad) student in her grade.” I understood why her teacher asked her to stay in Grade Three.     4    (take) her hand, I led the girl into the classroom.

I later learned that her parents died     5    (accidental). She became sad and didn’t like talking to others after that. She learned very slowly, but I gave her respect and never looked down upon her. Last summer, Katie Steller was on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man, in his 60s,     1     (apparent)looking out of luck, was sitting alone. I was really hoping to get my hair cut.”

Then, Steller unloaded a red chair from the car. The man, named Edward, took a seat. As his curly graying hair was being cut by Steller, he told her about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to Minnesota, and no matter    3    busy he was, he still talked to his mom over the phone every day. He said his family consisted    4    four people and that he had been living in Minnesota for about ten years. The    5    (interact)between them was very relaxing and constructive.

Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. One changed hers: As a teen, she suffered from ulcerative colitis(溃疡性结肠炎)that was so serious, her hair thinned severely. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut.

“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just a sick person helped me feel cared about and less alone,”she says.

After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own hair salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology school(美容学校)in 2016, she realized her dream. Two years later, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project,    6    (reach)out to people on the streets.

Steller said,“As you know, I can’t have their problems    7    (fix), but maybe I can help    8    (they)feel less alone for a moment.”Steller listens to people’s stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet.

An offshoot(衍生物)of the Red Chair Project is the Steller Kindness Project, in which people who commit acts of kindness are invited for a free makeover(美容)at Steller’s salon, In exchange, they tell their stories, which Steller shares on her website. It is her hope that by reading about kind acts, others will be inspired to do their own.

Wang Hongmei, a master in the Forbidden City, specializes in restoring damaged paintings. “I found conservation of paintings     1     (extreme) challenging at the beginning when I often had to stand for hours all day long due to the nature of the work.”

Wang recalled. “Commitment and time gradually     2     (calm) down my heart.” It takes a seasoned conservationist like Wang a whole year to restore just three to four paintings. Sometimes the work could take even     3     (long). A scenic painting over 170 square meters     4     size, which was created by Emperor Qianlong for his     5     (retire), was worn. Wang and her colleagues spent five years     6     (restore) the painting to its previous brilliance.

“These treasures are not simply individual items,     7     heritages (遗产) of the craft and spirit     8     (pass) on by the artists, collectors and conservationists of the past,” Qu Feng, one of Wang’s workmates, said. “Strengthened conservation efforts symbolize increasing national power and pride. If we can protect our cultural heritage to the best of our abilities, our nation will come to believe in     9     (it) more firmly.”

Due to the efforts by the masters in the Forbidden City, the public now can have     10     further understanding of cultural heritage protection.
