2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A few weeks before Thanksgiving one year, my husband and I decided to invite a guest over for the holiday. I called a senior centre and they suggested Ilse. She was a stubborn 78yearold lady, who favoured sequined (亮片的) Tshirts.

On Thanksgiving, within minutes of arriving, Ilse welcomed the glass of wine my husband offered with a wide smile. By the end of the evening, we felt as if we were old friends. The more time I spent with Ilse, the more she became like a surrogate (替代的) grandma. So when her only son Ralph died, I realized she was too upset to be left alone and helped her hire a caregiver. For me, she was like a family and I was the only one left in her tribe.

Each time I stopped by her apartment, Ilse seemed more disconnected than the time before. Late one afternoon, when I called her, I was unable to understand what she was saying. I drove her to the emergency room, where the doctor confirmed she had suffered a mild stroke. During the next few days, I dropped by her apartment, but she was no longer the energetic, stubborn Ilse I knew. At the end of the week, I received an earlymorning phone call from her caregiver. “Please come over now,” the woman said, her voice matteroffact. “She’s passed away.” When I arrived, I saw Ilse lying on her bed, motionless, her eyes closed. I sat on the edge of the bed, too shocked to cry.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer called Rip Van Winkle. He lived in a village in the mountains with his wife and two young children, a daughter and a son. Rip was a very happy and kind man and he got on well with all the children in the village. They loved him because he played games with them and often told them stories while he was sitting outside the “King George the Third”, a village inn.

He spent a lot of time in the inn because he was a very lazy man. Instead of working on his farm, he would go fishing or hunting, or sit by the village inn talking to his friends. His family was poor and his wife used to get angry with him. “What kind of farmer are you?” she would say. “Why don’t you get down to some work, you lazy man!”

After arguments with his wife, Rip always went off to hunt with his dog, Wolf. One day, after another argument, Rip went further than usual in the woods and came to a beautiful valley. Suddenly, he heard a strange voice calling his name. An old man, dressed in old-fashioned clothes, was trying to carry a barrel(桶) and asked Rip to help him. Rip agreed. They took the barrel to a cave, where there were more people, all dressed in the same strange clothes. After that, the old man gave Rip a drink of water from the barrel. Rip immediately fell into a deep sleep.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My husband Andrew, a wise father, teaches our kids how to balance risk with freedom.

We have four chickens: Pecky, Buckbeak, Mayonnaise and Cornflake. My husband made their coop (笼子). It’s beautifully made.

Actually he made it with our sons and daughter. The kids and their father spent several weekends in the garage. He gave them tools because he believed it was important that they could actually make something. He slowly helped them and together, they made the coop. They also made the mistakes of learning — a board cut too short, nails smashed by hammers — but in the end, Andrew did some tricks and the coop looked perfect.

The chickens loved their perfectly imperfect home and we also gave them free range in the yard. Andrew encouraged our kids to provide the chickens with quite a big area and explained that to take risks was part of life, and that by giving chickens the freedom to wander around and dig for bugs, it was a better experience for them than the confines (范围) of the coop.

Yesterday, they ran around the lawn (草地). We needed to go downtown, knowing that chickens wouldn’t go very far. When we got back, my son, Gordon, ran to check on them. There were Mayonnaise, Cornflake and Buckbeak, looking a mess but still alive. Yet Pecky was nowhere to be seen.

With Andrew, we searched the yard and found some feathers by the trees. Then, we saw more feathers littering the yard. By this time, Gordon started to worry; Pecky was his favorite chicken and his eyes got watery.

Andrew picked Gordon up and held him. As we stood there, beginning to accept that we were now a three-chicken family, we heard it — a soft clucking (咯咯叫的) sound under a bush.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it.She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.

Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter complained and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled (舀) the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to her, he asked, “Daughter, what do you see?”“Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she quickly replied.

“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.

He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and the coffee beans had each faced the same boiling water. However, they reacted differently. The potatoes were in strong and hard, but in the boiling water, they became soft and weak. The eggs were fragile (易碎的), with the thin outer shell protecting their liquid inside until they were put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the eggs became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When the disaster knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

Charlie was a rich boy who had more toys than you could imagine. His family had a lot of money, and whenever he liked something, they would buy it for him. In reality, then, he had no idea what things cost, and wouldn’t bother to take care of what he had. Nor did he realize how difficult it was for other children to get toys like the ones he had.

A time came, though, when he was so used to all his toys that he began to want something different. One of his uncles found a fine horse and he gave it to Charlie, as something unusual. Charlie was very excited at having a horse. He learned to ride, and was constantly on his horse, going here and there. However, he treated the horse just as badly as he treated all his other toys, and it soon started looking sick. For the first time in his life Charlie became truly worried. He loved the horse, and the fact that his family had offered to buy him a new one meant nothing to him.

One day, while in the countryside, he saw a little girl with a horse. The girl looked very poor, but the horse seemed happy and looked great. Wondering how she had managed this, Charlie secretly followed them, watching everything they did. First he followed them through the forest, where he saw that she never used the stick and never hit the horse. This was the opposite of what Charlie had done to his horse. Then they came to the stable (马厩), and as soon as they arrived the girl fed and watered the horse. Then she carefully cleaned it. Charlie was surprised. He’d never done any of those things for his horse. He saw that the girl spent a lot of time giving care and attention to her horse, and that she did it all on her own. This had never entered Charlie’s mind; he had always been too busy playing and having fun to look after the horse.

Paragraph 1:

Charlie wanted to change and become like the girl.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Once when I was young and had a loose tooth, I asked my father, a dentist, to look at it.

“It needs to be pulled,” he told me. I frowned, afraid of the pain of that experience. My dad sent me for some tissues and I imagined them soaking up liters of blood from my mouth. I closed my eyes and strengthened myself. I was still waiting for him to pull when I heard my father say, “I’m done.”

I opened my eyes and saw my tooth in his tissuecovered hand. I hadn’t felt anything, and there was just a bit of blood on the tissues. I thought my father was a magician.

The next day at school I bragged to a friend about my father’s wonderful skill. When I explained that the process didn’t hurt, my friend called me a liar. He said that when his tooth was pulled, it had hurt a lot. I talked to my father about this and there was not a single mystery left after my father’s explanation: my tooth had been ready to be removed, while my friend’s had not.

“I’m going to be a dentist,” I declared. I wanted to follow in the professional footsteps of my father, my uncle and grandmother. My father supported my ambition, honoring my interest in his profession even when I was young. He always encouraged me, saying,“To achieve your goal, you should always be devoting hard work and effort to it.”

I didn’t need to visit my father’s office as a child because I had few cavities. As I entered the elementary school and began eating more candy, however, I visited more often. I didn’t mind, though. I was the only kid I knew who was excited about going to the dentist. After my father worked on my teeth, he let me hang around. And I was amazed as he operated complicated machines, leaning over patients’ mouths with a tiny mirror strapped to his head.
