1 . Is smile just a facial expression? Of course not! It is not only used to express pleasure, affection, and friendliness, but also the commonest way to show our good will perfectly without saying anything. A Chinese saying runs:“Never hit a person who is smiling at you.” It is a time-proven fact that smile is a language all its own—a universal language—understood by the people of every nation in the world. We may not speak the same tongue as our foreign neighbors, but we smile in the same tongue. We need no interpreter for thus expressing love, happiness, or good will.

One day while shopping in a small town in southern California, it was my misfortune to be approached by a clerk whose personality conflicted with mine. He seemed quite unfriendly and not at all concerned about my intended purchase. I bought nothing, and marched angrily out of the store. On the outside stood a young man in his early twenties. His expressive brown eyes met and held mine, and in the next instant a beautiful, brilliant smile covered his face. The magic power of that smile made all bitterness within me melt, and I found the muscles in my own face happily responding. “Beautiful day, isn’t it?” I remarked, in passing. Then, obeying an impulse(冲动), I turned back. “I really owe you a debt of gratitude,” I said softly. His smile deepened, but he made no attempt to answer. A Mexican woman and two men were standing nearby. The woman stepped forward and eyed me inquiringly. “Carlos, he no speak English,” she volunteered. “You want I should tell him something?” At that moment I felt changed. Carlos’ smile had made a big person of me. My friendliness and good will toward all mankind stood ten feet tall. “Yes,” my reply was enthusiastic and sincere, “tell him I said, ‘Thank you!’’’   “Thank you?” The woman seemed slightly confused.

I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave. “Just tell him that.” I insisted. “He’ll understand, I am sure!”

Oh, what a smile can do! Although I have never seen that young man again, I shall never forget the lesson he taught me that morning. From that day on, I became smile-conscious, and I practice the art diligently, anywhere and everywhere, with everybody.

3 . With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dump, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the s lightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?

Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

1. What is the author’s attitude towards the present world?
A.SatisfiedB.Positive
C.CriticalD.Indifferent
2. The phrase “busting a gut" in the third paragraph can be replaced by            .
A.explaining carefullyB.speaking loud
C.keeping silentD.laughing hard
3. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that       .
A.it makes people more confident
B.it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world
C.it can pick up people’s spirits
D.it can help people get on well with others
4. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to        .
A.introduce a practical way to get through daily life
B.encourage people to be humorous in daily life
C.convince people of the power of humour
D.talk about his own understanding of humor

4 . Do you like writing a few paragraphs every day about your experiences, hopes, memories or feelings? If you don’t, it’s time to make a change now. Write just a few paragraphs every day about your experiences, hopes, memories and feelings, and you will immediately begin to experience benefits to your personal growth and potential.

You will gradually become better at expressing yourself.     1     However,   when   you become lazy with words, you find it is more difficult to describe feelings, share experiences and make yourself understood.

2     As you write about memories, it is like opening an old photo album. Your pen begins to explore feelings and details you have forgotten and dreams you have left behind. You suddenly remember people you would like to contact again. Writing is an activity that avoids distraction(使人分心的事) long enough for you to explore those wonderful moments of the past. Sometimes they are frightening.     3

Writing about daily experiences and feelings provides a recorded history that will influence how you make future decisions.     4     They learned from what had happened before. Your history is important. Don’t let it be forgotten.

Writing reminds you of your dreams and keeps you moving toward them. It is a means of keeping track of your purpose and the goals that will lead you to achieve them.     5     It shows when you have been distracted and may need to give all your attention again to your writing.

Writing a little every day could provide the material that someday becomes a published book. When I wrote about my depression and my four-year-old granddaughter who got lost in the mountains, I never dreamed it would be in a book.

A.You will remember things long forgotten.
B.Writing keeps you energetic and full of imagination all the time.
C.Sometimes they are wonderful and almost always they are helpful.

7 . To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human.

Common sense is not all that common.

Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse?

These three popular sentences are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature .To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do .The original quote about human nature went like this: “ To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的).”.This saying mirrors an ideal people should be forgiving of others’ mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite –find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a making of great maturity.

Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine.Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company, “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.”

And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of the common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that: if good excuse is “good” even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth?

1. According to the passage, which of following seems the most human?
A.To search for truth.
B.To achieve one’s ideal
C.To criticize others for one’s own error.
D.To make fun of others’ mistakes.
2. Which of the following is NOT based on common sense?
A.A man tries to take charge of everything in a large company.
B.A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather.
C.A company’s next move follows a good plan.
D.A lawyer acts on fine judgments.
3. What is the author’s opinion about a good excuse?
A.Bitter truth is better than a good excuse.
B.Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas.
C.A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty.
D.Making a good excuse is sometimes a better policy.
4. What would be the best title for his passage?
A.To Blame or to ForgiveB.A Mirror of Human Nature
C.A Mark of MaturityD.Truth or Excuse
