2 . Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie.
Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.
The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,” Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.
Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering(口吃的)son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.
The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child ---talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves(应得到)to be an only child at least once in a while.
1. What is the text mainly about?
A.The experience of the only child being with mother.
B.The advantage of spending time with one child at a time.
C.The happy life of two families.
D.The basic needs of children.
2. Right after McKenzie came back, the other children were _____________.
A.happyB.curiousC.regretfulD.friendly
3. What is one of the changes the author finds in her children?
A.The daughter acts like a leader.B.Sam holds her hand more often.
C.The boys become better followers.D.Tom has less difficulty in speaking.
4. The author seems to believe that ___________.
A.having brothers and sisters is fun
B.it’s tiring to look after three children
C.every child needs parents’ full attention
D.parents should watch others’ children

3 . The minute you start talking about what you’re going to do if you lose, you have lost.

Some people have a great fear of losing. In fact, fear is not the best description of what they have. It is more like a crazy phobia(恐惧症) that they cannot keep away from. Day after day, these people allow their fear of losing to control everything in their lives. They are so afraid of losing that they try to keep away from losing without considering the cost of doing so.

When things start to get out of control, fear begins to come in. As the fear of losing or getting hurt overwhelms(充溢) them, they quickly look for excuses, rather than fight back or find a way to deal with their fear. They never realize that losing is just as common as eating and breathing.

If one is given a choice, who wouldn’t prefer winning over losing? After all, winning is exciting and winning is what living is all about. Although we might try hard all the time, we’re not going to win every time. In fact, most of us are going to lose a lot more often than we win and, believe it or not, it’s not all bad.

In order to make the most of our abilities ,we have to take risks every now and then. When we take risks, we might get knocked down, or even knocked flat, but with each failure and each loss, we have an opportunity to get better and get closer to the life we expect.

1. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.The Bad Effects of Losing
B.Make the Most of Every Success
C.We Win Some and We Lose Some
D.Winning Is the Main Purpose in Life
2. By saying the underlined sentence “They are so afraid. . .” in paragraph 2, the author means           .
A.one should avoid losing by using any kind of means
B.one is too afraid to deal with losing properly by himself
C.one is so afraid of losing that he can’t step forward at all
D.one should make efforts to deal with losing rather than avoid it
3. We can know from the passage that           .
A.fear works most when one is eager to win
B.losing is a common part of our daily lives
C.one should avoid losing without considering the cost
D.the more losing one experiences, the stronger one will become
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Losing is of great value to success.
B.The more we fear, the better we will perform.
C.Only when we improve our abilities can we win.
D.Only through experiencing losing can we get what we want.

7 . The meaning of the word “volunteer ” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a ____ of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(录像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer the up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture(文化) that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
1. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.
A.is willing to help those in need without payB.can afford to travel to different places
C.has a strong wish to be successfulD.has made a big fortune in life
2. Tracy started her work as a volunteer _______.

10 . In a national spelling contest in America, an 11-year-old girl was asked to spell a certain word. But with her soft voice the judges were not sure if she spelled the word with the letter A or E.     1    At that time, the girl knew she had misspelled the word. But instead of lying and telling the judges she had said the correct letter, she told the truth that she had said the wrong letter.     2    As the girl walked off the stage, the entire audience stood on their feet clapping to applaud her honesty. Later, dozens of newspapers wrote about this 11-year-old girl’s courage and honesty, even when it cost her the contest.     3    Probably the biggest test of our character and honesty is what we would do if we knew we would never get caught. This young girl could easily have lied, and nobody would have known it but her. But that’s just it: she would know she did wrong.     4    This young girl was strong and smart enough to prize her own conscience and character more than the prize from a spelling contest. Her respect for herself was more important than any respect others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to live with herself and the choice she made at the moment.    5
A.So she won the contest.
B.As a result, she lost the contest.
C.The judges wanted to give her another chance.
D.It’s been said, “If you cheat, you make yourself cheap.”
E.It’s so true that the choices you make today make what you are tomorrow.
F.They talked it over and finally decided to simply ask her what she had said.
G.But the fact is that she won the biggest contest that day: the contest of her character.
