1 . A few months ago, I found myself in a bad situation with an old friend. For some mysterious reasons, he had suddenly turned against me.

I had no idea what to do. Part of me felt self-pitying, part of me felt like I was being oversensitive and should just shake it off, and part of me was so angry and just wanted to beat that friend. At first I wondered who all these voices in my head were to send me such contradictory messages about how to feel and behave. And which voice represented my true self? Thankfully, I have discovered the work of a therapist (治疗专家) named Richard Schwartz who suggests that perhaps none of us is really a single unified self, but instead a combination of various selves. Schwartz reassures us that containing all these different parts doesn’t make us crazy; it only makes us human. He also suggests that if we can identify and name the different parts of ourselves, we might have an easier time managing our lives.

Inspired by this idea, I did some deep diving to try to identify the most important selves living within me. I was able to find and name three.

Meet Lizzy. Lizzy is an anxious little kid who lives in terror of conflict and abandonment. Lizzy annoys me because she’s so helpless, but she also has great strengths. She feels compassion (怜悯) toward everyone because she knows how hard life is.

Meet Elizabeth. Elizabeth is my inner creator. She’s a grand and passionate risk taker. I love Elizabeth because she’s so artistic (she’s the reason why I’m a writer). But she also has a defect: She stubbornly refuses to accept reality.

Meet Ms. Gilbert. Ms. Gilbert is my most grown-up self. She’s the emotional opposite of both Lizzy and Elizabeth. She’s responsible, brave, organized, and independent. But she can also be a strict and an unforgiving critic of herself and others.

If we can find a way for all our parts to peacefully coexist, we might actually have a chance to live in harmony. And that, in the end, is what all of us want.

1. What Was the author’s reaction to the bad situation with her old friend?
A.She had complex feelings about it.
B.She couldn’t stop feeling self-pitying.
C.She wanted to figure out the cause first.
D.She felt like turning to a therapist for help.
2. What do we know about Lizzy in the author?
A.She is brave and kind-hearted.
B.She is really useless to the author.
C.She easily gets frightened but is kind.
D.She is the one that makes the author’s life hard.
3. What is the genre (writing style) of the passage?
A.Argumentation.B.Narration.
C.Description.D.Exposition.
4. What does the author probably want to show through the text?
A.We should live in harmony.
B.We should give up a bad friendship.
C.We should talk to ourselves at times.
D.We should make our various-selves coexist.

5 . As a child, I was generally happy, singing and dancing to my favorite songs, smiling and laughing with my friends and family. But as far back as second grade, I noticed a “darkness” about me. I didn’t enjoy engaging in many things.

In middle school things in my life began to get even worse. I began withdrawing from everything I once enjoyed—swimming, tennis, family. I hated going to sleep knowing I had to wake up to another day. I was always tired. Everything was horrible. Finally, midway through eighth grade, I was told I had a chemical imbalance, diagnosed with clinical depression, and put on medication. It took months for me to feel the effects of the medication.

When I began to feel happy again is when I realized that I had to take the responsibility for getting better myself, rather than relying on medicine. Aristotle said, “To live happily is an inward power of the soul,” and I believe that this quote describes what I had to do to achieve happiness. Happiness is a journey. Everyone seems to need different things to be happy. But I believe people are blinded from what truly makes one happy.

“The essentials to happiness are something to love, something to do, and something to hope for,” a quote from William Blake sums up what I believe people need to realize to be truly happy in life. People need love; I feel they need their family and their friends more than anything in the world. People need work to do, something to make them feel they are making a difference in the world. People need to know that more good is to come in the future, so they continue to live for “now” instead of constantly worrying about the bad that could come. And most importantly, people need to know that happiness is not something that happens overnight. Love and hope are happiness.

1. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A.He was diagnosed with clinical depression in Grade Six.

C.He suffered a lot from clinical depression.
D.He spent months recovering from the clinical depression.

A.hopeB.belief
C.loveD.work
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Ways to overcome depression.B.The importance of being happy.
C.The essentials to happiness.D.Love and happiness.

6 . It’s often said of British people that they are very aware of each other’s social rank. Britons can usually work out a fellow countryman’s background from the way they speak or dress, and may even treat them differently based on this. But although this may have been truer in the past than it is today, visitors to Britain say that they still notice it. The comic play Pygmalion (1913), by the Irishman George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), is a famous exploration of the importance of social rank in British society.

The main story of the play concerns a working class girl, Eliza Doolittle, a flower seller from London. Two upper class gentlemen try to see if they can get Doolittle to appear like an upper class lady after sending her for elocution lessons. Professor Henry Higgins, a language expert, says it can be done; his friend Colonel Pickering says that it’s impossible. Even so, Higgins sets out to teach Eliza how to “speak properly”.

Of course, Eliza isn’t a lump of clay; she has her own will. She can see that it’s in her best interest to go along with Higgins’ plan to “improve herself”. She wants to be able to sell flowers in a shop rather than on the street. After the training, Eliza proves that a flower girl can pass herself off as a lady at a ball. She is a triumph (赢家), and Higgins has won his bet.

But what happens next? Eliza has her future to worry about. She may be able to fool the upper class into thinking she’s one of them, but she isn’t really one of them.

Shaw seems to be telling us that social rank is about more than the way someone talks-it’s about wealth and privilege. The whole experiment proves the idea that accents and classes are very superficial (肤浅的). The way one speaks and dresses are only markers of class. The class system itself, however, is something completely different.

1. What can we learn about speaking and dressing from Paragraph 1?
A.They determine Britons’ social rank.

D.They could affect others’ opinion of a person.

4. Which of the following would Shaw probably agree with?

7 . It's good to make mistakes, and here is why.

First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It's always good to try new things because when we are trying new things,we are growing. If we never try anything new,how can we improve? The simple answer is,“We can't”.

Another good thing about mistakes is that when we are making them,we are learning.Consider this—Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times,he said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn't work.

When we make a mistake,we are much closer to success.Because every time we make a mistake,we eliminate one of the things that keep us from success.

But all this doesn't mean that we should go through life without considering the consequences of a mistake.Instead, when we try something new,we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn't work out the way we want it to,we will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources—in the form of time and money—so we shouldn't blow them all on one approach to a problem. It's best that we realize it probably won't be perfect for the first time and allocate these resources appropriately so we can learn, make corrections, and try again.Only by accepting and using our mistakes in this way can we make significant advances in our lives.

There is an old saying that goes,“If you're not making mistakes, you're not trying hard enough”.So go forth and make mistakes.

1. Which can be used to replace the underlined word“eliminate”in Paragraph 4?
A.make up forB.get rid of
C.acceptD.expect
2. What do we know from the fifth paragraph?
A.We should ignore the possible consequences.
B.We should accept the outcome willingly.
C.We should make some limits for our next try.
D.We should avoid making the same mistakes.
3. What is the text mainly about?
A.Dealing with mistakes.
B.Making mistakes.
C.Making progress.
D.Benefiting from mistakes.
4. What may the writer suggest we say to ourselves when making a mistake?
A.Never mind,I tried my best.
B.Great!Now I have learned something.
C.This is a waste of time.
D.Look at this mess.I should just give up.

8 . I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside. She was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me. With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned(皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I had to admit I was a rather mechanical (呆板的) pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant. “Like a story. Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”
Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’ horse sees her plight (困境) and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. Luckily, they make it to the bank.” Pasha said.
I played many pieces of music that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.
1. By describing herself as a mechanical pianist, the author meant ________.
A.she could remember the notes in a short time

10 . Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations. Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants(被告).But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder,it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were thought as having more integrity than plainer men;effort and ability were thought to account for their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones;their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman is thought to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine(有男子气概的)than the less attractive ones. Thus,an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appears to lack the “masculine” qualities required.
This is true even in politics. “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently,”says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men,but the women who had been ranked most attractive invariably received the fewest votes.
1. The underlined word “liability”(in Para.1)most probably means “________”.
A.misfortuneB.instabilityC.disadvantageD.burden
2. In traditionally female jobs,attractiveness________.
A.reinforces(加强)the feminine qualities required
B.makes women look more honest and capable
C.is of primary importance to women
D.often enables women to succeed quickly
3. Bowman's experiment reveals that when it comes to politics,attractiveness________.
A.turns out to be an obstacle to men
B.affects men and women alike
C.has as little effect on men as on women
D.is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women
4. It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often________.
A.practicalB.prejudicedC.oldfashionedD.pessimistic
5. The author writes this passage to________.
A.demand equal rights for women
B.emphasize the importance of appearance
C.discuss the negative aspects of being attractive
D.give advice to jobseekers who are attractive
