文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。健康的友谊可以帮助我们处理压力,过得更快乐,更长寿。文章主要介绍了关系专家提供的建立和加深友谊的建议。

3 . Healthy friendship can help us deal with stress and live happier, longer lives. Here are tips from relationship experts for making and deepening friendships.

Be optimistic

People receiving an unexpected communication, such as a short note or a small gift, appreciated the act more than the people sending it.     1     We often undervalue how much people like us. If we think we’re going to be liked, we become warmer, friendlier, and more open.

Expect awkwardness

Awkwardness isn’t a good reason to back out of a new relationship.     2     Besides, recent research from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University shows we often overvalue how awkward a first meeting will be. But when it comes to the effects of talking to strangers, the other person might be more worried about an awkward conversation.

    3

Making a close friend takes time-often more than 200 hours of time together over several weeks, according to University of Kansas study. Do you know why people are often advised to take a class or volunteer?     4

Practice

5     How can we strengthen our muscles? By exercising, right? We can work our communication skills in the same way. In a 2022 study by Sandstrom, participants (参与者) were required to talk to strangers every day for a week. Guess what? In the end, people were less worried and more confident about starting conversations with strangers.

A.Put the time in
B.Make a list of close friends
C.It’s just a normal part of getting to know someone
D.Improving social skills are just like building up our bodies
E.Not surprisingly, a positive attitude can help us make friends
F.Repeated activities come with a fixed get-to-know-you schedule
G.Keep in mind that nobody gives it to you in all the ways you need

A Fortunate Escape

Max, Ben and I were walking home together while I bit into the brown beef burger I had grabbed from a shop nearby. “Truth or dare, Ben?” Max questioned. It was a game we usually played to amuse ourselves on the lengthy, boring journey home. Ben wanted a dare. “Well, Ben, I dare you to carry my bag all the way home!” Max commanded.

As Ben pulled the heavy bag up his shoulder and adjusted the bag belts, he noticed that Max’bag was partly open. When he quickly turned it around, an object flew out of the bag, and over the fence of our neighbor’s house.

“Oh, no,” Max shouted, “I think that was my English homework!” Stretching his hand out and trying to crawl (爬) under the fence to get the paper, Ben found that it was just out of reach.

“Well, I guess I’ll have to climb over the fence to get it,” Ben complained. He was barely able to climb up, using small gaps in the wooden fence as handholds, as the fence was nearly as tall as him, and low enough for something to be thrown over it.

Sliding down the fence, Ben grabbed the valued piece of paper, complaining about injured self-respect. Just then, a loud and terrifying bark cut his words short.

“Woof, woof!”

Our neighbor, Mr. Mason, owned a German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬), known for its fierceness, which guarded the house. It was something we had overlooked, too focused on getting back Max’s homework. Ben’s legs trembled uncontrollably and his face turned a deathly white as the German Shepherd advanced slowly on him like a wolf approaching its target.

Max and I stared at it, frozen with fear. Ben backed up against the fence, attempting to climb up, but a loud bark stopped him in his tracks. I desperately searched my mind for a silver of an idea about how I could assist Ben. Should I climb up the fence and help Ben? Or could I do something to distract the dog?

9 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On the first day of school, Tina’ s teacher told the class, “Everyone of you will have a turn to be the Terrific (极好的) Kid of the Day!”

All year, Terrific Kids celebrated their special days in special ways, but Tina hoped her turn would never come.

When Ben was the Terrific Kid, his aunt Sarah taught the class how to draw funny cartoon faces. Tina didn’t have aunts. When Ken was the Terrific Kid, his twin baby sisters came to school. Tina didn’t have sisters or brothers. When Curtis’s turn arrived, his family came to school. Curtis’s mom baked cakes. Curtis’s father was a gardener and gave every child a plant. Curtis’s grandmother taught the class a song. Tina didn’t have a dad or grandmother.

After school that day, Tina walked to the library for Story Hour. Mrs. Kaplan, the children’s librarian, greeted Tina with a bright smile. “Today’s story is about your favorite animal, Tina!”

A dog story! Tina loved dogs, but wasn’t allowed to have pets.

“Will you work the puppet (手偶) while I read the story?” Mrs. Kaplan asked Tina.

The little black and white dog puppet felt soft. Tina liked it so much. So when Mrs. Kaplan read Tina’s favorite dog story, Tina moved the dog puppet alongside.

After Story Hour, Tina waited until 7: 00 for her mom to pick her up. That night, Tina kept thinking about being a Terrific Kid. “I hope my turn never comes,” Tina thought.

Sure enough, Tina’s turn came. When she told Mrs. Kaplan that the next day was her turn to be the Terrific Kid, she had tears in her eyes. When Tina’s mom arrived, Mrs. Kaplan asked her into her office to chat while Tina waited.

On the way home, Tina and her mom stopped at Tico Tony’s for hot dogs. Tico Tony noticed Tina’s sad face. “Hey, Tina! What’s up?” Tico Tony listened while Tina told him about her Terrific Kid day. “We think you’re a Terrific Kid.” He smiled and, winked (眨眼示意) knowingly at her mother.

That night, Tina’s mom stayed up late baking cookies.

Then, the day arrived. Tina walked slowly to school with her mom. Her Terrific Kid day wouldn’t be terrific-just cookies.
