2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Father’s Day was in two weeks. I didn’t know what to get Dad. Last year I made him a photo album. This year I wanted to do something different.

At dinner, Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was ruined. I suddenly knew what to get Dad for Father’s Day!

“How much does a tie cost?” I asked Mom the next morning.

“Depends,” she said.“ Some can cost twenty dollars. Do you have enough money. Carter?”

“No, ” I said sadly.

When I got to my room to change into my school clothes I noticed a hole in my shirt.

“Mom, I need you to sew(缝补) my shirt, I said loudly, rushing out the door to the school bus.

At school I picked at the hole in my shirt. I thought about how I could come up with enough money to buy a tie. I took a deep sigh, and played with the hold some more. As the hole grew in size, an idea sprung into my mind.

After coming home from school, I dug through my closet trying to find other worn clothes.

“Mom! "I yelled down the hall heading towards her.

Can I cut these clothes up to make Dad a patchwork(拼缝) tie for Father’s Day?” I pointed out the holes to Mom.

“ I guess,” he said.

“And,” I added, “Can you show me how to sew and make tiny stitches(针脚)?”

“Yes, Carter. Let s start now before Dad gets home.” Mom said, heading for her sewing supplies.

I followed Moms instructions and started making a patchwork tie. I gently pressed my foot on the foot pedal(缝纫机脚踏板) . Suddenly, the needle stopped and the machine made a horrible sound. “No!” I said.

“Try again, Carter, ” Mom instructed.

I took a deep breath and gently applied the pedal again. Unluckily, I failed again.

4 . Going on a holiday can cost a fortune with three kids in the family. Flights for five people, even domestic ones, are really expensive and often you have to book hotel rooms to fit your entire family, which is yet another costly exercise.

And while camping is cheap, it’s only fun when it’s not raining or too hot. Also fitting the kids and all the camping equipment into the car is pretty troublesome.

But we love to explore and holidays are really important to our family so we saved up and bought a caravan. We named her Audrey. She is a little rough around the edges, but what she lacks in looks, she definitely makes up for in character. We hope she would give us the freedom to travel more without the crazy costs.

She has brought us together in so many ways. We can simply go to a local caravan park and be all set to relax at the beach or Barossa Valley in under an hour. There’s something about hitting the road to explore new places together, which makes us a tighter unit. Shared experiences also mean more memories to treasure.

Audrey is also fantastic when friends come to visit. We can plug her into power so guests have a television, fridge, lights and a fan or heater when needed. We put fresh sheets on the beds and flowers into a vase and keep some yummy food in the fridge. The kids also use her regularly to escape the rest of the family and watch movies or do paper cuttings.

Definitely as an important part of our family, Audrey will forever be in the leading position of some of our most precious family memories.

Wonderful Christmas Gift

Ann and her mother had lived in a small unattractive cottage as long as Ann could remember.

Christmas was so close, and so was her birthday. Ann wished she could get a new dress as a Christmas gift. All her friends would be getting new dresses. But Ann did not want to ask her Mom for a new dress. She knew how hard her mom worked to make both ends meet. Maybe she could make a wish — maybe Santa Claus would come. Ann couldn’t help dreaming about the new dress even though she knew that Santa Claus was just an imaginary character. Her classmates were talking only of Christmas celebrations which were nearing. “My rich aunt is surely going to give me a pretty branded doll again,” said Ria. “I have been hinting about that costly watch to my parents. They are bound to gift that to me”, told Tessi. Ann felt left out in those conversations. She neither had rich parents nor rich aunt or uncle to give her expensive gifts. It was not just gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Nowadays she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.

The days passed and soon it was Christmas Eve. In everyone’s, except Ann’s house, a Christmas tree decorated the living room. Every child went to bed eagerly waiting for the lovely gifts that he or she would receive the next day. Ann went to bed with a heavy heart. She knew that there would be no gifts for her. Ann wished with her whole heart that at least this time she would get a gift from Santa Claus. Ann slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamt of Santa riding in the snow on his reindeers (驯鹿).

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

For nearly twenty years, my life was about two things: smoking cigarettes—and trying to quit smoking cigarettes.

When I married Cassie ten years ago, I threw my pack of cigarettes and swore I was quitting.

When we bought our first house eight years ago, I celebrated it by pulverizing (粉碎) my pack of cigarettes with my shoe heel.

When my son, Cole, was born five years ago, I threw my cigarettes into a garbage can.

I even began working out—running days a week, rain or shine. I lost forty pounds but I never was able to outrun those cigarettes.

You know cigarettes are deadly—but every cell in your body screams out for that nicotine. Then, one day the willpower I had lacked arrived from most unexpected place: an unclouded corner of my son’s mind.

As Cassie was driving Cole home from kindergarten, they passed a cemetery (墓地), which made the boy ask: “Mom, what’s under tombstones?”

Realizing there was no delicate answer, she frankly said, “Dead people.”

“Is that where Dad’s going to be because he smokes?” Cole asked. “I hope not,” Cassie replied. “Dad shouldn't smoke,” Cole said, his voice rising in anger. He kicked the back of the front seat. “Dad’s stupid for smoking. When I'm twenty, he’ll be dead.”

Cassie was speechless, shocked by Cole’s innocence. Then, just as quickly as he had exploded, Cole calmed down. “I hope he comes back as a ghost and talks to me,” he said peacefully. “Like Obi-Wan Kenobi did to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.”

9 . New parents who clean their homes very often to protect their babies from bacteria and other organisms might cut back their efforts.

A new study suggests high levels of contact with cleaning products are linked to an increased risk of the childhood breathing condition known as asthma (气喘).

Researchers asked a group of parents how often they used 26 common household cleaners during their babies’ first three to four months of life. By age three, the children who had come in contact with cleaning products the most were more likely to be diagnosed with asthma. The researchers said children who had a lot of contact with cleaners were 37 percent more likely to have asthma than children with the least contact. The study also found a lot of exposure to cleaning products caused children to be 35 percent more likely to have chronic difficulty breathing. In addition, they were 49 percent more likely to have chronic allergies.

Tim Takaro, who helped lead the study, suggested that parents should question the belief that their home is clean only if it smells like chemical-based cleaning products. He also advised them to look for products free of substances like chemical colors. Besides, they should consider natural cleaning products instead of chemical ones.

The American lung Association recommends avoiding cleaning products that contain volatile (易挥发的) organic substances and other irritants (刺激物). But companies in Canada and the United States are not required to list all the chemicals in cleaning products. Some products labeled as environmentally friendly, or "green", may contain harmful substances.

Elissa Abrams, a doctor with the University of Manitoba, admitted the effects of cleaning products are not well understood. But she believed these products and the chemicals they contain act as irritants to growing children "The take-home message is that parents should be careful with cleaning products they use in the home", she added.

1. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The suggestions on using cleaning products.
B.The parents’ opinions of household cleaners.
C.The conduct of the study and the findings.
D.The reason for using cleaning products.
2. What should parents do according to Tim Takaro?
A.Have a full understanding of cleaning products.
B.Keep their home free of all kinds of cleaning products.
C.Use natural cleaning products rather than chemical ones.
D.Make their homes smell like chemical-based cleaning products.
3. Which of the following is a fact about the cleaning products in America?
A.They are environmentally friendly without any harm.
B.They are asked to list all the chemicals contained.
C.They are free of irritants if labeled "green".
D.They are not always safe to be used.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Arts & Culture.B.Lifestyle & Health.
C.Life & Technology.D.Climate & Environment.

10 . 阅读下面短文,按照要求完成阅读任务。

My family had moved into a new house with big back yard. For some time, my older brother and I had been expecting a family pet. Finally, we managed to persuade our parents that the time had come for keeping one.

Though my brother and I were of like minds about the goal of having a family member, what exactly it meant to each of us was entirely different. I was excited and happy when my parents brought home the dog, Snoopy. Despite the fun of playing with him,I knew it was really more my brother’s pet than mine. I really, really wanted a cat! I tried to show my joy for getting a pet while trying to hide my disappointment that he wasn’t a cat. My parents must have known how I was feeling because they suggested that I could make a wish about it.

Running to my bedroom, I made a wish sincerely that I would have a cat. Not more than a minute or two passed when I heard a faint scratching sound(轻微的抓挠声) coming from the front door. Curious, I stood up, approaching the open front door. There, sitting calmly before me was a large, white cat.

I was absolutely amazed! I went close to the white cat, and it began walking towards me. I gathered his mass into my arms and then I went into the back yard where my parents and brother were playing with Snoopy. So, Snowball joined our household that day, too.

Although my parents always denied having anything to do with Snowball's arrival, I guessed they might have. However, even if they did somehow arrange for him to appear at the front door at the very moment when I was making a wish for a cat, it would not reduce the miracle of a cat doing in my life.
