Every day in the morning I make different sounds, starting with an “oomph” as I move to an upright position, then an “ahhh” as I swing my legs off the bed, followed by an “arrrrrrrgh” as I get to my feet. Then there’s an “oh God” as I realize that my knees are unequal to the task they’ve been set.
My wife Jocasta believes in positive thinking. “All sighing and complaining will simply make you feel worse,” she says. “If you act like a young gazelle (羚羊), then you’ll feel like a young gazelle. “I’m guessing Jocasta doesn’t know many young gazelles, at least not ones with aching knees and tired ankles. I then decide to follow her instructions, but to the power of ten.
I draw the curtains open, allowing sunlight to flood the room. “What a beautiful morning!” I say in a too-cheerful voice. “I’m planning a pot of Sri Lanka’s finest tea for you. It is picked on the cool slopes of the country’s mountainous central district and will be served with milk given by a diligent young cow.”
“Oh, God! Can you give it a rest?” says Jocasta. “Sure, your knee aches, but you can still get around. Pull your shoulders back, lift your head high, and highlight the positive. The science about positivity is that the body responds to signals sent by your brain. When you spend 23 hours a day sounding like a miserable old man, you’ll turn into a miserable old man.”
I take a sip of tea before raising another case. “Yes,” I say, “but the research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Pain shows that people can bear pain if allowed to swear. So,” I continue, “when I limp off to work, yelling ‘Oh God, my knee’, I’m just acting on the latest science.” This is replied with Jocasta’s dark looks. “I’m not anti-swearing; I’m just anti-complaining.”
There’s enough tea in the pot for a second cup. It is somehow more delicious for the way I imagine out loud where it is picked and how the milk is produced. The sunlight streaming in, I find myself humming a happy tune when a “horrific” thought hits me—Jocasta seems to have made it!

A Different Kind of Perfect
Ellie loved the family gathering at Lola’s house on Fourth of July. She loved Lola’s chicken adobo — chicken in a delicious sauce (酱汁). It was perfect. But this year, Lola asked Ellie to make the adobo by herself because she must visit a sick friend.
“But I don’t know how!” Ellie said.
“That’s why you should be in charge. ” Lola smiled.
Lola pulled out the ingredients (原料): chicken, onion and lemon juice. She explained how to make the dish and then left.
Ellie got started immediately. When the dish was cooked, she tasted it and added a little more of this and a little more of that until it tasted right.
“Now it’s like soup! I need more chicken.” Ellie said to herself, “But I have no time to go to the store. What else can I use?”
The doorbell rang as relatives started to arrive. Ellie wanted to cry.

A New Addition to the Family
For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

Mom was used to give us something special for dinner when I was girl. She once put some burnt breads in front of Dad. To my surprised, Dad just smiled at Mom and eat it up. One morning in the autumn when I was nine, Mom asked me to do some yard work with her. She had grown some potatoes in our yard that spring. It was time to harvest (收获). She wanted me to help her dig the potatoes. “Do I have to?” I said unhappily.
“Yes，you do,” Mom gave an answer. Then she added, “Change your attitude and it'll be easier.” “That's what you think,” I thought to myself. I sat on the sofa watch TV. Soon Mom wouldn't wait any longer and ordered me to follow her.
Worried that she'd be angry, I walked slowly out. I was unwillingly to move my feet—almost as though there were magnets (磁铁) fixed to them and the ground was metal. Or it felt like my socks were filled with wet sand. Or maybe my feet just stuck to the ground.
Following Mom's instructions, I picked up a shovel and started to work. I needed to be careful when digging up potatoes, otherwise I would damage them. The damaged potatoes would easily rot (腐烂). I pushed the shovel into the earth slowly and lifted the earth onto one side. When that was done, potatoes came out. Then I had to use my hands to free the potatoes from below. After that I placed them into a basket. It was really dirty and boring.
