3 . Many American schools have a student exchange program with foreign countries. Along with this program, there is usually another one called the “American Host Family” program. As its name suggests, the program gets American families involved in foreign students’ lives in America and offers homes for them.
Foreign students generally welcome such an opportunity to have a “family” here, but there are also those who prefer to stay “homeless”.
Many American families volunteer to host foreign students. However, if there is a shortage of host families, schools also get in touch with local people and introduced foreign students to them.
The “American Host Family ”program changes in lengths of time. It can go from a few days to a few years, depending on each individual school. After the first year is over, it is up to foreign students and their “families” to decide if they want to stay together as a “family”. American families can host as many foreign students as they like. They can either have several students or just one at a time. Many families start with new students each year while still keeping in touch with the old ones. Schools usually leave it to Foreign students and their host families to decide their activities after both sides meet.
My school, however, holds activities every year. On major holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, foreign students are usually invited to their themes for dinner. Even schools that do not have host family programs often arrange students to get together with American families on these special holiday occasions.
It is typical that a host family invites its foreign daughter or son over, and they cook the student’s home food together. Undoubtedly, Chinese students are usually considered good cooks, whether or not they are really qualified for such praise at home. Although many Chinese students rarely cooked at home, they often have a hard time making their American friends believe that they cannot cook. It often happens when a Chinese student promises to cook a Chinese meal for his host family, he usually sees a little crowd expecting him: friends or relatives are also invited over for the “special” Chinese food!

5 . I’m Alice. From childhood, my sister and I each received a new calendar every Christmas from my parents. And even though we shared a bedroom and could have shared a calendar, too, we always got our own. My sister is three years younger than me, and for many years she requested a teddy bear calendar. My calendars always contained photos of a princess.
Even after I began my family, I still told my husband there was only one Christmas present I’d want most every year—a family photo calendar. And each year, he’s delivered.
Each month of my calendar features a few photos taken in the same month of the year that just passed. These photos are a way for our family to revisit fun events or to realize just how much my son Ryan has grown in one year.
At the end of the year, the completed calendar will go on the bookshelf with every other photo calendar that’s come before it. Through those calendars you can know what our family was like then—what we looked like the year before and how we will fill our days in the new year.
When I was a kid, unwrapping(打开) each new calendar gave me a sense of hope and promise for the year to come. Times have changed. Now, unwrapping the new calendar is different. I feel a sense of pride and joy when I look at our family and revisit our good times. But there is also a sense of sadness when I realize how big Ryan has gotten.
As I look through the pages, I don’t know exactly what the year ahead will hold for us. However, we can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious(意识到的) of our treasures(宝藏).
And that is the true gift.

7 . In many countries, it is still common to see the whole family cooking together. You will find parents, their children and their children's grandparents in the same kitchen at the same time cooking as a family. They talk with each other, have fun and make a great meal at the same time. However, a lot of families are too busy nowadays to spend this time together.
In fact, it is very important to find some time to cook together. Even if it is just once a month, whenever it is possible, cooking as a family should be done. Family members rarely get a chance to connect with each other as a family, and cooking together can do that. It can also foster an interest in different types of foods, such as healthy food like vegetables and fruits. What's more, a home - cooked meal is often healthier than the one cooked at a restaurant.
Having kids cook with their family in the kitchen also helps develop their self-confidence (自信心). They can feel like they are doing something important by contributing to the needs of their family. It is also more likely that the family will eat dinner together if they prepare it together. This will increase the quality time that the family spend with each other.
Cooking as a family will also help members understand family values. This has many benefits, one of which is that children who spend more time with their parents are less likely to do dangerous things. Cooking together is sure to bring the family closer.

I was hungry and hopeful that our babysitter would make a meal. But I found she was sleeping on the sofa. So I wanted to turn to my sister, Ashley. She was coloring in her room. When she saw me, unexpectedly, she said, “I’m hungry. Let’s make some sandwiches.” Unluckily, before making sandwiches in the kitchen, Ashley and I had a fight. We ran around the kitchen, throwing flour at each other. Flour flew in the air around us as we went into the living room. Suddenly, we heard footsteps outside.
“Oh, no! Mom is coming!” I said. “What are we going to do about the mess?” I wondered nervously. It looked like it had snowed inside the house. Ashley quickly ran and took a vacuum cleaner, but she didn’t know how to turn it on. Suddenly, Mom walked in, tired from a long day’s work. After seeing the scene, she shook her head.
Ashley and I ran to her and smiled. Mom didn’t get angry at us. But she seemed disappointed at the babysitter when she woke her up and showed her the mess. Once the babysitter had gone, Mom went into her room. “We’re not in trouble!” I shouted with joy. “But Mom didn’t look so good,” Ashley said to me in a sad voice. “What? She was smiling. Surely she looked good and happy!” I argued. Then Ashley continued, “Well, let’s go and see!”
So we went to Mom’s bedroom door and secretly looked in. Mom was sitting on the bed with tears in her eyes. We returned to the living room. “Mom is crying because of our mess,” Ashley said. “Let’s clean the house. And she’s probably hungry now. Why don’t we make sandwiches for her? We just need to put some meat, vegetables, or something else in between two pieces of bread.”
