8 . There are always times when your children get bored with studying. There are also moments when you are looking for something educational (教育的) ,yet funny and easy to do with your family. With few things and even less preparation, you can easily entertain (娱乐) and educate your children.
Do you read any magazines with pictures? Keep them. They can make a funny family game. Sit with your children and look at the pictures You can cut out interesting pictures and ask your children to lay them out. Use as many pictures or words as possible. For example, if it is a picture of a book, cut it out. Even if it is an action, such as washing clothes, cut it out. Try to get as many different pictures as possible.
In this game, you are going to use the pictures to let your children make up their own stories. Then take any kind of table, even the kitchen table, and let your children lay out the pictures any way they wish. They don't need to use all of them, just as many as they want.
After they have laid out the pictures, let them tell a story. If some pictures don't match their stories, don't use them. If they find a different picture to put another part to their story, let them do it. The more pictures you have, the more creativity(创造力) will come from your children.

Amanda felt as gray as the sky outside when she looked across the table at her little sister. Li sat on her seat, drinking from her cup.
“Mom, why does Li hate me?”
“Honey, she doesn't hate you. Li is still getting used to you,” Mom said. “It's only been two weeks.”
“But look,” Amanda took a cookie off her dish and held it out to Li.
“Want to eat it?”
As soon as Li saw Amanda reaching over, her eyes widened. Li quickly got down from her seat and raced to her room.
“See?” Amanda said to Mom. “I thought being a big sister would be fun.”
Over a year ago, Amanda’s parents said that they were adopting(收养)a daughter from China, and Amanda had danced with excitement. She'd dreamed of taking her sister to the park, reading books to her, and teaching her to ride a bicycle. That hadn’t happened.
“She runs away whenever I get close,” Amanda said.
Mom took Amanda’s hand. “Think of how frightening it is for her. She’s in a new country with a new family.”
“I just wish I knew how to help her,” Amanda said, thinking of Li's frightened eyes.
Amanda went into the family room and sat down on the sofa. How could she help Li? She’d sung songs to her, drawn pictures for her, and made funny faces. None of that had worked.
Amanda turned on the TV. She stopped to watch a film about a dog and a cat. The film was in another language. The show looked funny, but she didn't understand any of it. It made Amanda remember when they were in China. She had gotten frustrated(沮丧的)when people talked in Chinese.
That' s it. Amanda turned off the TV and sped to her room. She found the CDs Aunt Linda gave her last year to help her learn some Chinese.
Amanda tiptoed(踮着脚走)to Li's room. Looking in, Amanda saw Li curled up(卷缩)in a ball on her bed. She could hear Li sobbing(哭泣). Amanda knocked on the open door.
Li moved to the back of her bed.

Hosting an exchange student is a fun and exciting experience for the whole family. However, there are always preparations to be made before the student arrives. What should a family do to help make an exchange student feel at home?
An exchange student comes to explore a foreign culture, and getting on with his or her host family is part of that experience. The host family should be as considerate and kind to the exchange student as possible. If the exchange student is to have his or her own room, the preparation should begin here. This room should be as inviting as possible. The family should find out the student’s favorite color and some preferred accessories(饰物). They may not want to paint the entire room navy blue(海蓝), for example, but may want to include navy accessories such as a bedside lamp, trash can, or quilt. The room should ideally(理想地) have a desk, enough storage space and a closet or dresser. It might also be helpful to buy a full-length mirror and mount it on the closet door.
The host family should also check if the exchange student has any special needs and make sure they can meet these special requirements. A wheelchair ramp(斜面) or handrails in the bathroom might be necessary. An exchange student with special needs might even have a service animal, and consideration should be given to this situation as well.
A family should also be prepared for the exchange student to face homesickness(想家). Most exchange programs have counselors(顾问) and other workers who are used to dealing with this, and they should be consulted as soon as possible. A family should also consult their own family doctor, letting him or her know that they have an exchange student in their home.
