Brackenridge Park

North of downtown near Trinity University, 343-acre (英亩) Brackenridge Park is a great place to spend a family day. Biking or walking around Brackenridge Park, along the Mission Trail and along the River Walk makes for a nice outing when the weather is mild. McAllister Park

For a taste of the Hill Country, head to this 976-acre park. It has about 7 miles of paths for walking and cycling; one of the paths is also wheelchair-accessible. There is also a public workout station near the Turkey Roost Trailhead in case you want to get your sweat on and don't have membership at a local gym.

Friedrich Wilderness Park

This 600-acre park near Six Flags Fiesta Texas is just for hikers. It has 10 miles of walking paths in a Hill Country landscape that are especially worth a visit when wildflowers are blooming in spring. Close to the Balcones Escarpment, you can also see evidence here of Texas' geologic(地质的) history.

San Antonio Botanical Garden

This expertly tended, 38-acre garden complex showcases native Texas flowers. There's also a rose garden and a wonderful green house, with a bit of everything from rainforest to desert plants. 4 . The most unusual museum in London is the Science Museum. In most museums, there’s no shouting and no running, and you aren’t allowed to touch the exhibits (展品). But the Science Museum is different, because it’s noisy! People talk about what they can see and do there, and some of the machines are noisy as well. Visiting the Science Museum is fun and it’s a great way to learn about science because you can work things out and try out ideas.

When I visit the Science Museum, I go to the Launch Pad. This is my favourite room because you can do physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with falling sand, you have to move a kind of truck on wheels into the correct position. I also go to the Rocket Show. You can learn how we travel into space and back again.

Then I go upstairs to Human and Nature room. You can compare your speed with animals there. You hear a noise and push a button (按钮). If you aren’t fast enough, the lion catches you! I’m faster than all my friends, but the lion still catches me.

There are also rooms on transport, the environment and space technology, as well as maths, physics and chemistry.

You can do a lot of things in this museum, but you have to obey some rules as well. For example, you mustn’t take photos of the exhibits in the museum. But you can buy postcards of them in the museum shops.

Above all, the Science Museum is free. That means you can drop in for a few minutes or you can stay as long as you like—it’s open every day, from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It’s my favourite museum in the whole world.

After months of being absorbed in colorful garden catalogue, I often hit the nursery (苗圃) in May, filled with inspiration and adventure. “This year,” I say, “I'll try everything!” But time has taught me that this wild ambition can work against me. If I choose too many plants to experiment with, my plantings will crowd each other out. 9 . I'm always surprised when I hear the stats (统计数据) about how little time kids spend outside. One study found children are spending less than half the amount of time outdoors than they did just 20 years ago. Meanwhile, the Kaiser Family Foundation found that kids spend an average of seven hours a day using electronic media.

My own childhood was filled with outdoor time. I built forts in the woods, rode my bike with friends, went ice skating in the winter, climbed trees and rocks, and read books on a platform in a tree on hot days.

But my nature time wasn't limited to after-school and weekend activities. I attended a public school in New York's Hudson Valley, and we spent almost all our gym outside. We spent science classes on the acres that surrounded our school, collecting samples from trees and learning about everything from chemistry to physics.

All that outside time isn't just about health and getting kids to exercise more. Several studies also have linked outside time to higher test scores, lower anxiety and aggression, more creativity and improved attention spans.

A public school in Vermont, is taking these results seriously. Eliza Minnucci’s kindergarten class there engages in Forest Mondays, during which the students spend the whole day in the woods, rain or shine.

Minnucci said that playing outdoors involves plenty of learning. It’s fairly easy to weave lessons into nature play. Kids wanted to know the names of birds, plants, rocks and clouds. We followed streams into larger streams into larger streams into a pond and created bridges with logs and stones. We even made up stories about ants and butterfly. For the older kids, we had more defined lesson plans, but we were still outside the whole time, and we would often go off on a tangent(转向)if something interesting was happening, so the learning experience was always fresh and engaging. Besides learning and moving around freely instead of sitting at desks, the kids were having fun while they learned, which made them excited for the next lesson.
