1 . We all know that theme parks are places to have fun and amuse ourselves, but among so many exciting rides there are also some dangers. Make sure you know what the safety standards are for all the attractions at the park. If you do that, you will be safe and have fun.

Drink water. Believe it or not, dehydration—when your body doesn’t have enough water—is the commonest cause of injuries at theme parks. Drinking water while you are at the park is not enough. You must make sure that you drink enough water before your visit.

Use your “common sense”. There are lots of people around, so make sure where your friends or family are. Also, if you are walking and want to stop, make sure nobody is walking behind you. First step aside, then look behind and if you aren’t in anybody’s way, then stop. It might sound exaggerated(夸张的), but crashes between people can cause accidents.

Follow the instructions. The majority of theme parks have instructions for each ride. Some rides only allow people of a certain height. So make sure you are not too tall or too short before boarding any ride. Also, people with certain diseases or conditions are advised not to go on some rides. Do remember: If you are told not to go on a ride, then DON’T.

Do not ride with a bad stomach or if you’ve just eaten. Rides can make you ill because of their violent changes of direction and your lunch may end up on someone else’s head: surely not a very pleasant experience.

Have fun, relax, and be a little brave!

Some rides might look scary but theme parks are very safe places.

7 . Taking a vacation with friends could turn out to be the getaway of a lifetime or one that’s a total disaster. How do you make sure the trip is a success?     1    . Here are some tips on planning a vacation with friends that’s memorable in the right kind of way.

Establish expectations first

You may think that you and a friend have the same idea of a holiday because you both want to go to the beach, but you might be interested in relaxing while your friend is looking forward to going to nightclubs.     2     or you are setting yourself up for conflict.

Have an itinerary (旅行路线)

When traveling with others, set an agenda ahead of time to avoid any last-minute, tense negotiation. Either work with a travel adviser to create the itinerary or delegate (委派) one person in the group for the job — it should show when activities start, and how long and what exactly they are.     3    .

Build in some space

You don’t have to spend all your time with your friend.     4    . Order room service for breakfast one day or plan other meals and a few tours for just you and your family. But it’s best to schedule these ahead of time — not when you feel that you cannot spend another minute together.

    5

Deciding who is paying for what and how it will be tracked should be discussed before your trip. You can end up with one person who doesn’t drink feeling angry that they are splitting the bills with people who order expensive bottles of wine, and this is the kind of anger that can destroy a friendship.

A.Choose the ways to treat friends
B.Figure out money matters first
C.Make sure you understand each other’s ideas of vacation
D.In fact, taking breaks makes your time together more enjoyable
E.Different ways to parent may not matter at home but can be obvious on vacations
F.It’s all about choosing the right travel partners and going in with some ground rules
G.And everything should be optional, so whoever isn’t interested doesn’t have to join

8 . One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.

In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my “secret sharer”, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.

There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的) to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos: the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.

Under the shade of a brush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together

My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.

I never told my mother about my “miraculous(奇迹)” experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.

1. The author’s mother told him to borrow a book in order to ________.
A.encourage him to do more walkingB.let him spend a meaningful summer
C.help cure him of his reading problemD.make him learn more about weapons
2. The book caught the author’s eye because________.
A.it reminded him of his own dog
B.he found its title easy to understand
C.it contained pretty pictures of animals
D.he liked children’s stories very much
3. Why could the author manage to read the book through?
A.He was forced by his mother to read it.
B.He identified with(对某事有同感) the story in the book.
C.The book told the story of his pet dog.
D.The happy ending of the story attracted him.
4. Which one could be the best title of the passage?

9 . Did you take part in a camp this summer ?     1     To choose which camp is best   for you, first you must do a bit of research.

Maybe you've never thought about it before, but every great summer camp has the same   main goals — opportunity, challenge and growth.

Opportunity means you are given a chance to do something special.     2     For   example, if you are interested in writing, then you can choose to join a journalism camp. You may even have the opportunity to meet famous journalists there.

For example, you could take a lifeguard course at some summer camps. If you pass the exam, then you will receive a certificate (证书)to become a real lifeguard.

This also leads to the third and most important goal of every great summer camp personal growth. It doesn’t mean growing taller and stronger or more beautiful. It means seeing yourself improve, learning something new and doing something you didn’t know you could do before.     4    .

10 . What do you usually do when you have some free time? Do you take part in any form of hobby? If your answer is no, then you should think twice. Experiencing some type of interest or hobby might be the ideal way to develop your brain and improve your creative thinking.

Here is a common problem that many older people have. They have spent such a great deal of time raising their family that once their children are grown and left home, they all of a sudden start to experience their age. Quite often, it is not their age that is the concern. It is the fact that they are unexpectedly offered more time on their hands.

When you put in too much time not doing anything, this can affect your brain. This is just where the expression “If you don’t use it, you lose it” definitely is the truth. Your mind needs working out much like any other muscle in your body. This is why getting a hobby matters. It offers you something to do and is a perfect way to meet new people.

Enjoying a hobby is also a perfect way to improve creative thinking at any age. Even young children can profit from taking a new hobby. For retired people, enjoying a hobby which they can find entertainment in with their grandchildren will help keep them active and feeling young at heart.

Several hobbies that are terrific for both your mind and you body include yoga, biking, swimming and golf. If you aren’t fond of sports, even taking a walk regularly is a wonderful way to keep active. It helps you to appreciate fresh scenery and it has been suggested that the colors green and blue help make you more creative.

As you can see above, you can get pretty much from taking a hobby. With so many choices waiting for you, begin your journey right away!
