1 . Founder is turning ownership of the company after nearly 50 years into two entities (实体) that will help fight the climate crisis.
Patagonia is a private company based in Ventura, California, which sells outdoor clothing and equipment, and was founded in 1973. Patagonia’s founder Yvon Chouinard, who has previously expressed his unwillingness at gathering wealth, is giving away his company. The outdoor clothing company will now be in the hands of a trust and a nonprofit organization. All future profits will be donated to help fight climate change, the company announced Wednesday.
“It’s been a half-century since we began our experiment in responsible business,” Chouinard said. “As the business leader In ever wanted to be, I am doing my part” He added, “Instead of taking value from nature and turning it into wealth, we are using the wealth Patagonia creates to protect the resources. We’re making Earth our only shareholder. I am dead serious about saving this planet.”
Chouinard and his family will be turning over their entire ownership share into two newly created entities. Those entities will ensure that the company’s values will continue to be upheld—and that Patagonia’s profits are used to combat climate change.
“If we have any hope of a thriving planet 50 years from now, it demands that all of us should do all we can with the resources we have. We want to both protect the purpose of the business and immediately and continuously release more funding to fight the environmental crisis. We believe this new structure delivers on both and we hope it will inspire a new way of doing business that puts people and the planet first.” Chouinard said in a statement Wednesday.
This nonprofit organization will make sure that the company’s annual profits, about $100 million per year, will be used to protect nature and biodiversity, support thriving communities and fight the environmental crisis.

3 . Lynda Doughty, a marine biologist, developed a passion for marine wildlife during her childhood. Growing up along the coast of Maine, she witnessed the impact of human activity on marine mammals and she made it her life’s work to protect them. “I feel this intense responsibility to help these animals,” Lynda said. “And, really, this is what I was put on this Earth to do.”
Harbor seals are among the most common mammals found along the East Coast, and they face various threats to their well-being, including fishing net s and illegal feeding, chemical pollutants, as well as boat and propeller (螺旋桨) injuries.
Earlier in her career, she worked for a marine mammal emergency response organization that eventually closed due to lack of funding. To fill the gap left by the group, Lynda started her own non-profit organization — Marine Mammals of Maine in 2011. It has since provided response and medical care for more than 3,000 marine mammals.
Lynda’s team operates a 24-hour hotline that responds to calls regarding marine mammals in danger. Their permit allows them to respond to mammals stranded (搁浅) within 2,500 miles of the coastline, and her team only offers help if the mammal is in critical condition. Critically ill mammals are transported to Lynda’s center and nursed back to health. Seals typically require three or more months of professional care treatment before they are released back into the ocean.
In addition to mammal rescues, Marine Mammals of Maine conducts important research to learn about marine mammal habitats and human impacts. Marine mammals can give us clues about the ocean’s health, which ultimately affects human well-being as well. The organization also helps promote marine conservation among youth and the local community. In addition, they instruct the public on what to do, and what not to do, when encountering wild species like harbor seals.

4 . The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a national program of volunteers trained in disaster preparedness and emergency response. Through Teen CERT, you can serve your community and help take care of your school and home.
Why Join
Would you know what to do if an emergency comes? After a disaster, professional responders will be needed everywhere. During an emergency, who could help until professional responders arrive? Who could be the first person on-scene to step up? The answer: You.
In most emergencies, a bystander or even the victim, provides the first immediate assistance. Join Teen CEKT, and you will learn how to respond when others look to you for help.
What You’ll Do
We all have a role to play in keeping our communities safe. What role will you play? Once you complete your CERT training, you can participate in or lead a variety of activities.
During an emergency, your Teen CERT could organize volunteers, give assistance to survivors, provide damage assessment information, pro\ide shelter support and assist with crowd control.
Teen CERTs can also help in their schools year-round. Your Teen CERT could participate in disaster drills and exercises, present fire safety education, assist in preparedness outreach, provide peer mentoring and address safety issues in the school.
What You’ll Learn
It takes about 20 hours to complete the CERT training. During the training, you will learn to put out small fires, conduct light search and rescue, assist those who are injured, set up medical treatment areas, assist emergency responders, identify possible dangers and help reduce survivors, stress.
You can also take the Introduction to CERT training. This independent study web-based training is interactive and will introduce you to CERT skills before you take the classroom training.

6 . Volunteering is a great benefit to the community. Many nonprofit organizations couldn’t survive without volunteers. However, you may not realize how much it also benefits your career.
●Volunteer in different areas.
You may be likely to just volunteer at one place, and that can be fine.
●Use it to build skills.
Volunteering is the perfect opportunity to build your own skill set.
●Network while you volunteer.
Another way to help work on your career is to use volunteering to help network. Really, you don’t have to go out of your way to network.

In fact, you have about a 25 percent higher chance of being hired if you volunteer than if you don’t. If you don’t have a high school diploma (毕业文凭), that number increases to a 50 percent higher chance.
●Put your volunteer experience on your college application.
If you’re still in high school, volunteering looks great on a college application. It shows leadership, initiative (主动性), and commitment, all things colleges love.

8 . One Brazilian chef(主厨), Regina Tchelly, is using traditional ways to repurpose(赋予新的用途) leftover food(吃剩的食物), feeding her community via her social project Favela Organica. Tchelly was shocked by the amount of food she saw thrown away daily in the city’s markets, because she had grown up with the knowledge of how to use every part of fruits and vegetables.
Favela Organica began as a grassroots project, with Tchelly teaching small groups of women from her community how to repurpose leftover food that they got from local markets and grow their own produce in their yards.
“It started in my house with six stay-at-home moms,”she said. “We wanted to bring a new way to the food inside our houses. It was from this that Favela Organica grew. With these six moms, it became ten; then it became fifteen; then it was fifty, and then the world welcomed the project.” Later, she expanded(扩展) her offerings to courses such as urban gardening and so on.
But the benefits (益处) of Tchelly’s courses go beyond helping the environment. From her free courses for the locals, people learn tips on using food waste that help them save money on their bills. One of Tchelly’s students, Ivonides Silva uses the skills she learned to start a small baking business. She sells some cakes, earning about $42 a month. The extra income from the project is a huge boost to her family. “Tchelly gives us the tools to create a small business to make some money, which changes our life greatly,” Silva said.
