1 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或用括号内单词的正确形式。

You may think, salt is just a simple cooking element. Actually, salt is much more than that. Without salt our muscles would not move, and our heart would not beat. Salt means life.

But do not think rubbing salt in a wound will help. Doing that would be painful and not heal the wound. To rub salt in a wound is an idiom that means to     1     (purpose) make a bad situation     2     (bad).

Early     3    (explore) understood that if they could keep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. So they made good use of salt to preserve food and explored the world.

Salt was so important that it     4     (trade) pound-for-pound for gold in the past.

Today, people still use “to be worth one’s salt”    5    (describe) a person who is useful and valuable. A person might also be called “the salt of the earth”,    6     means he or she is dependable and trustworthy.

In many old stories, spilled salt is a sign     7     bad luck and trouble. Even today, if some people spill salt, then they will throw     8     over their shoulder.

They believe     9     (throw) salt behind them scares the devil.

But these stories about bad luck should be taken with a grain of salt. In other words, listen to a story or     10     explanation with suspicion and distrust.

2 .

Good habits are formed by creating new habit loops; loops that cycle from cue (暗示) to routine to reward and back round again. Start with the routine and decide on the new habit that you want to introduce. The more detailed you can be, the better.     1    .

Research shows that it’s best to introduce a new habit after a routine is already formed.     2    . A cue can be as simple as deciding that after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays you will go to the gym instead of going straight home.

Once you’ve chosen a cue and worked out the routine that should follow it, you’re on your way to forming a new habit.     3    . This is where the reward part of the loop comes in. Every time you complete the new routine you should receive a small reward.     4    .

One of the most important aspects of forming a good habit is being realistic. While your goal might be to go running five days a week, it’s much easier to start with something a little smaller.     5    .

A.However, the brain needs to strengthen the connection between the two.
B.As soon as you wake up every morning you’re going to drink a large glass of water.
C.Then you can point out a certain part of your day or week that can become your cue.
D.As the connections are strengthened you’ll need to put in less effort to complete the routine.
E.This way you won’t be too stressed and will still get the reward you need to strengthen the habit loop.
F.“I want to cook five dinners a week” is much easier to achieve than “I should make dinner at home more”.
G.For example, you could promise yourself a reward, such as a small break or some time to do an activity you enjoy.

3 . Visitors to my home are often curious about the fact that my kids share a room. “How do you make it?” they ask, as if seeing some children in the same sleeping space is impossible.     1     I will share my practical tips below.

Set the sleepy environment. This applies to any child’s bedroom, but it’s particularly important to set bedtime when you've got multiple little ones sharing a space.     2     Get a white noise machine.

3     Regularity is key when putting young kids to bed in the same space. If they are close in ago, do it at the same time. We put all our children to bed by 7 p.m.. And we also wake them up at 7 a.m..

Some noise is OK.     4     They will need reminders not to care about it, to stay in bed, to settle down, and go to sleep. This is normal. Kids do wake up sometimes when babies cry, although I'm always amazed at how much they can sleep through once they are used to it.

Buy the right furniture. Invest in good space-saving furniture, like beds with drawers.     5     Try to keep the room dedicated for sleeping. This will make the room feel less cramped, which — at least for me — makes having multiple kids in the same place feel more manageable.

A.Stick to the schedule.
B.How do l make it work?
C.Keep toys to a minimum.
D.Again, regularity is key to success.
E.Kids in a shared room will make noise.
F.Use darkening curtains on the window and a closed door.
G.If your baby has trouble settling at bedtime, you can start the night in another room.

4 . 2012 was one of the hardest years I have ever known because I lost my husband. For sea-eras months, I found it hard to write, think, eat or take pleasure in anything; I could not imagine what it would be like to feel happy again; I could not find any hope or purpose.

I cannot remember the reason why one Monday morning I decided to go to a hot yoga studio in east London, where I signed up for a 3 O-day trial. I do not remember the class or how much I sweated. What I do know is that I started going to hot yoga every day, Sometimes, when my head felt as if it might collapse (崩溃), I went twice a day. I skipped parties, left social events and got up early to attend. There was something about the hot room that held me together, stopping all the dark thoughts inside my mind.

I chose the Bikram method of hot yoga: It has a set of 26 postured and two breathing exercises performed in heat over a period of 90 minutes. This form of yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury. In 2015, he failed in an attempt to copyright (取得版权) his method. Many practitioners (从业人员) believe that Bikram is not real yoga. Some question the limita-lions of just 26 postured. Others wonder why the class has to be performed before a wall of mirrors. However, something in those 26 postured freed my mind, dragged me out of my thoughts and back into the present. I was able to focus on how my body behaved differently each day.

1. What happened to the author in 2012?
A.She succeeded in writing.B.She tried to find hope again.
C.She gave up her yoga classes.D.She fell into deep depression.
2. What can be inferred about the author from the second paragraph?
A.She practiced hot yoga to lose weight.B.She went to the yoga studio once every day.
C.She attached importance to her yoga classes.D.She was sorry to skip parties to go to the yoga studio.
3. How did yoga help the author?
A.It helped her make money.B.It helped her feel more focused.
C.at helped her get to know its founder.D.It helped her practice her performance skills.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A health magazine.B.A travel brochure.C.A research paper.D.Science fiction.

5 . Having a negative attitude on life and yourself is harmful to you and to the people around you.     1     But if you are willing to change the way that you view the world and yourself, then there are several things that you can do.

    2

If you believe the world is a bad place, you will probably tend to have a negative attitude. As such, if you can work on changing your beliefs about the world, your attitude will likely follow suit. So try to look for evidence that is contrary to the belief that you hold.

Examine your ideas about the world.

Your negative ideas about the world may cause you to act a certain way and this can determine the result of some situations.     3    And each time one of your predictions comes true, your negative views are reinforced. For example, if you think that the world is a cold, mean place and so you are cold and mean to people. As a result, people may be cold and mean to you in return.

Take responsibility for your attitude.

You have a lot of control over the way you think about the world. Try to keep that in mind and use it to your advantage.     4     Remember that although you may not be able to change your situation sometimes, you can still change how you react to them by adopting one kind of attitude over another.

Re-frame your focus.

In some sense, much of reality is personal, such as whether you enjoy what you are doing or not. This largely depends on the thoughts that you emphasize and focus on. For example, if you do not much enjoy your job, you might think with a bad attitude “This really sucks”.     5

A.Fake it until you make it.
B.Challenge your existing beliefs.
C.Eventually, you are responsible for your attitude.
D.Your negative ideas may even start with predictions .
E.You can examine your attitude about the world and about yourself.
F.However, you could also take a positive attitude and think “It is pretty amazing.”
G.The longer you have a negative thought, the harder it may change that attitude.

6 . Take back control

There are times in life when nothing seems to go to plan. The trip you were looking forward to is called off, your house sale falls through, and you haven't exercised in three weeks. All of these things have happened to me and, on occasion, at the same time.    1     Either that, or you end up giving up and feeling like your life is always going to be full of problems.

So, how do you keep your calm in testing times, but also hold it together for long enough to pull yourself out? Contrary to what you may think, I'm a believer in giving in to how you're feeling, at least for a moment.    2

But how do you turn things around? The first thing I do is write everything down. I draw a line down the middle of a page. On the left, I write down all the things that are stressing me out. On the right, I write down everything that needs to be done to fix these problems. Then, I look at the list and I cross out all the points over which I have no control.    3     Next, I write down the possible actions against each point on the list. Finally, I force myself into taking action by picking up the phone and asking someone for help;    4     After all, a problem shared is a problem halved.

In my experience, the easiest way to keep calm is to regain control of your situation. When we feel out of control, we fall into a downward cycle, and taking back control stops this.

5     Finally, I remind myself of an age-old truth: this too shall pass.

A.I focus on the things that I can do something about.
B.We can think and worry about many things at the same time.
C.And the moment we start doing, we move away from thinking.
D.I always find that this simple act makes me fix things quicker.
E.The truth is, it's hard not to lose control of yourself in these moments.
F.Better to fall into it, accept the situation for what it is, then get back on your feet and go again.
G.No matter how bad things are, keeping your calm will always help you find a better outcome.

8 . My husband and I made an agreement to help each other stay off social media platforms as much as possible. We left our accounts up instead of deleting them, but consciously stopped using them.     1     Now, I’m glad to report that they have worked.

Tired of being the last to hear of things, we downloaded a few news-specific apps that provide timely information.     2     Instead of relying on articles shared by my friends, I now have access to a steady stream of headlines that span far broader than my pre-specified interests.

Staying updated on our social circle has also been a more conscious effort. Previously I was kept up-to-the-minute on engagements, weddings, new jobs and babies through updates and pictures.

Without social media, I now learn of these important events only when actually meeting the people involved.

3     The effort taken to sit down and write is far challenging, but when I do take the time to journal, my reflections go far deeper.

I still log in occasionally.     4     Based on the screen time tracked by my phone, I used to spend an average of over 24 hours a week on various social media platforms. That is down to just 20 minutes every month now, freeing up a large amount of time for sleep, hobbies and offline interactions.

5     I might know less about my acquaintances now, but have more time to keep directly in touch with my closest friends. Walking home last week, I was greeted by a dramatic purple-pink sunset. I would have immediately reached for my phone a year ago. Now, it was enough to simply watch it darken into the night.

A.Overall, I'm glad to have made the change.
B.I bought myself a diary again after many years.
C.We have made a few adjustments in our daily life.
D.This has also widened the range of news I keep up with.
E.I do miss the convenience of using social media to record and reflect.
F.However, social media now plays a much less important role in my life.
G.I didn't realize how programmed I had become to constantly use the app.

The Feel-Good Shoebox

Catherine sat on her bed with her chin in her hands. “Why aren't you getting ready for Grandma's birthday party?”asked Mother.

“I can't bake like Sylvia or knit like Anne,” Catherine grumbled. “They made good presents. All I made for her is an ugly card.” “It's a lovely card. And no one can be good at everything,” said Mother. She sat on the bed next to Catherine. “When I was your age, I felt sad when I couldn't do certain things. But one day Grandma showed me the shoebox game, and it made me feel a lot better.” Catherine frowned (皱眉). “How can a shoebox make me feel better?”“You'll see,” said Mother. She disappeared down the hall, then came back carrying a shoe box, a pencil, paper, and scissors.

Catherine watched as Mother cut several pieces of paper into squares. “Nôw, I want you to write down all the things you can do,” said Mother. “Like what?” asked Catherine. “Why not start with things you've learned in school? Give it some thought while I ice Grandma's birthday cake.”

Catherine sat for a while wrinkling (起皱纹) and unwrinkling her eyebrows.Slowly Catherine began to write and write. Before long she had written on every square of paper. She was so busy that she didn't hear Mother come into the room.“My goodness!"said Mother.“Do you think they'll all fit in the shoebox?”“I hope so,” said Catherine. “It was fun thinking of all the stuff I can do.”“And the next time you feel sad because you can't do something, your feel-good shoebox will remind you of how much you can do-just as mine did when I was a little girl,” said Mother,“Now let's finish getting dressed for Grandma's party.”

10 . How should you view this pandemic situation? You shouldn't look at this situation as a force that drags you down.     1     If so, it will take your life to the next level. Here are some tips on how to reinvent yourself.

Identify your core (核心) skills.

Reinventing yourself means taking a new direction. Most likely, though, it will be based on the foundation (基础) that you have built before.     2     Therefore, you need to look beneath the surface. For instance, you might think that your skill is writing articles but your core skill may actually be connecting different ideas and communicating them.

Imagine new possibilities.

Having identified your core skills, you can then imagine new possibilities. How can you use your core skills to provide value for people in a new way? Be creative in your imagination. Don't let negative voices stop it.     3

Be resourceful.

4     Rather than avoiding them, expect them and be prepared. The key here is to be resourceful. I love the dictionary definition of resourceful having the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties.

    5

Going in a new direction isn't easy. There are pitfalls (陷阱) along the way. If you aren't careful, you could pursue one thing at the expense of other more meaningful things in your life. That's why it's essential that you spend time reflecting. It could be in the form of prayer, journaling, or something else. The important thing is that you take time to reconnect with your deepest values.

A.Take time to reflect
B.Figure out your true value
C.Let it go to unexpected directions
D.Luckily, you still own your core skills.
E.One such foundation is your core skills.
F.Instead, view it as your chance to do something new.
G.Like it or not, there will be difficulties along the way.
