1 . Tips for overcoming adversity

Be aware of, and accept that adversity is unavoidable in life.     1     To avoid or resist it will only make it persist (持续). Everywhere you look in the world there is unmistakable struggle. There are floods, tsunamis, wars and disasters of all types. Although pain is unavoidable, suffering is optional.

Build your internal resources. Before adversity hits, work on cultivating ( 培养) emotional strength, courage and discipline. When you make yourself aware that certain difficulties are unavoidable, you can prepare yourself mentally for facing adversity head-on.     2

Build your external resources. Build a support system of family and friends.     3     We need someone to talk to, someone to help ease the burden ( 负担). You would be surprised to discover how often a friend has had a similar experience and can help guide you through the difficult time.

That what does not kill you will make you stronger. If you do not have enough built-up resilience ( 韧性) or experience in dealing with difficulties, adversity can crush you.     4     Resilience like any muscle is built up gradually with repeated exposure to adversity.

Take inspiration and learn from others who have dealt successfully with adversity. There are many inspiring stories of people who overcame seemingly insurmountable ( 无法超越的) difficulties.     5     For example, when Helen Keller was only 18 months old, she lost her sight and hearing due to a mysterious fever. She overcame her deafness and blindness to become a strong and educated woman.

A.Whether we like it or not, adversity is part of life.
B.But just knowing a friend is there can be most comforting.
C.But if you have sufficient resilience, it will make you stronger.
D.He prepares himself physically and mentally for any possibility.
E.When the going gets tough, we all need encouragement and support.
F.Usually, when you're prepared for the worst, the worst never happens.
G.They overcame adversity to live successful lives instead of yielding to it.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了早起的益处,如提高认知能力、改善睡眠质量和有更充足的时间吃早餐等。

2 . •While people don’t always like the old saying “the early bird gets the worm”, getting up early is actually the secret to the success of many people.     1     There are also other benefits of waking up early in the morning.

•Improve your cognitive (认知的) function. People who get up early in the morning can concentrate better, are more attentive, and stay energetic throughout the day. Since people’s brains are more active in the morning, focusing on important tasks earlier will allow you to make better decisions than people who work later. Morning people have better problem- solving skills.     2

•Help you sleep better. Waking up early makes going to bed early easier and helps you get consistent sleep and wake times.     3     Getting enough sleep may lower your blood pressure and improve brain function. However, people who tend to be night owls are more likely to feel tired and develop sleep disorders.

•Give you more time to eat breakfast.     4     After all, food is the fuel people need to feel energetic and ready to face the world. Just grabbing a coffee and a piece of bread at the drive- through will not give you what you need. Enjoy a nutritious breakfast of Greek yogurt and fruit to start your day off right.

5     Are you too tired or too busy to work out at the end of the day? Try going to the gym or for a run first thing in the morning. A morning workout can change your mood, lower stress, reduce anxiety, and increase your energy levels.

A.Give yourself more time to get relaxed.
B.Get you to do exercise early in the morning.
C.And thus this can lead to a better quality of sleep.
D.Setting your alarm clock early will give you extra time.

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 pm. Adam, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.

Entering his room, Adam found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.

“Sorry, Adam. I … I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.

“What is it?”

“This afternoon I sneaked (溜) out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Osman Brook’s car. I was so scared and I … I hurried home in panic.”

“Is the car seriously damaged?”

“The left headlight got broken.”

“It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it’s illegal,” Adam raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.

“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”

The next morning when Adam got up, Bill was still sleeping soundly. Adam was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.

After breakfast, Adam took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches (划痕) were clearly visible. Adam shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Osman’s house.

When he arrived, he was welcomed by Osman’s wife Mary, who told him that Osman had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.

“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?” Adam requested eagerly.

“Of course. He should be home soon,” Mary invited Adam in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.

After half an hour, the door opened and in came Osman. Having said hello to each other, Osman and Adam both sat down on the sofa.

5 . How to Have an Attractive Personality

Being attractive comes more from your personality than your appearance, and demonstrating an attractive personality is key to having lasting relationships.     1    The following tips help foster your ability to fascinate others.

Laugh at yourself. If you make a fool of yourself, laugh at yourself instead of feeling embarrassed. It shows that you’re comfortable in your skin. A sense of humor makes someone more engaging and delightful to be with.     2     It is a great ice-breaker or stress reliever, but don’t ruin a serious conversation with inappropriate jokes.

Speak sincerely. Tell people the truth. If you can’t commit to something, it’s better to be honest about it than to have to tell them last minute that you can’t make it. When people ask for your opinion, you should be honest.     3     For instance, if you don’t like your friend’s shirt, respond with, “I really like you in blue instead,” rather than, “I hate it, it’s ugly.”

4     If you see value in making others laugh and keep yourself positive, you’ll be a happier person, making others drawn to you as a result. A great way to remind you to laugh more is to have daily jokes on your phone or email. Set them for a time of day when you notice yourself start to feel drained.

Have confidence in your body. You don’t have to have the “perfect body” to be confident in it. People will be more attracted to you if you dress well and carry yourself well. If you need a little boost, place posters around your mirror that remind you of the charming parts of your body.     5

A.Speak in a positive way.
B.Make laughing a priority.
C.Remember, there is a time and place for humor.
D.There is difference between being frank and rude, though.
E.Focus on these rather than what you’re self-conscious about.
F.Actually, developing engaging personalities is not that far out of reach.
G.But having charming appearance is only skin-deep and far from enough.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了,一些关于如何应对生活中消极的人的小贴士。

6 . I’ve dealt with a fair share of negative (消极的) people in my life. Here, I’ll share with you several tips on dealing with negative people in your life.

One of the most important things I learned is not to debate with a negative person. A negative person likely has very firm views and isn’t going to change that. Just because of what you said.     1     The discussion will just turn into more negativity, and you pull yourself down in the process. You can give helpful comments and if the person argues with no signs of backing down, don’t go further.

Some people complain as a way of crying for help. They may not be conscious (意识到) of it, though.     2     Take the responsibility to lend a helping hand. Just a simple “Are you okay?” or “Is there anything I can do to help you” can do wonders.

Some negative people start for certain topics.     3     Simple things like new movies, daily occurrences, common friends, make for light conversation. Keep it to areas the person feels positive towards.

One way to help the negative person “get it” is to ignore the negative comments. If he/she goes into a negative state, ignore it or give a simple “I see” or “OK” reply. On the other hand, when he/she is being positive, reply in affirmation (肯定) and enthusiasm.     4     He/she will adjust to be more positive accordingly.

5     If it’s a good friend, let him/her know of the seriousness of the problem and work it out where possible. It’s not healthy to spend too much time with people who drain (消耗) you. Your time is valuable, so spend it with people who have positive effects on you.

A.Negative people aren’t just negative to others.
B.Then you can bring in a new topic to lighten the atmosphere.
C.Learn to see the goodness of the person rather than the negative.
D.Do this often and soon he/she will know positivity pays off.
E.Their comments come across as complaints rather than requests.
F.If all else falls, reduce connection with them or avoid them altogether.
G.Whatever you say, they can find different reasons to back up their viewpoint.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些使家里保持干净和气味清新的措施。

8 . Usually, you spend most of your time at home.     1     However, with all the smells a home experiences, such as those created by cooking, people and pets, keeping it smelling good is often a difficult task. A bad-smelling home is not only unpleasant to visit, but gives the impression that your home is also unclean, which isn’t always the case. Fortunately, you can keep your home smelling fresh and clean with a few techniques.

2     Additionally, pick up any objects from the floor, such as clothing or towels, and place them in the box. Wash your dishes daily, which will keep your home smelling fresh.

Dust the objects in your home once weekly. Rub a soft cloth over your television and top of furniture to remove the dusty layer. Use a polishing spray for extra shine.

Wash your bedclothes on a weekly basis. Sheets, blankets and pillow cases often hold germs, which cause a smell to occur. So wash them regularly.     3

Bathe your dog and its bedding regularly. A dog’s smell can transmit from the animal to your floors, furniture and bedclothes. Wash the dog to prevent smells, as well as dirt, mud and other materials from being transferred from your dog to your items in your home.     4     Brushing daily can also release smells and materials that can cause the dog to create a foul smell in your home.

Shampoo(用洗涤剂洗)your carpets.     5     So the dirty carpets can make your entire home smell not-so-fresh. Cleaning carpets can remove any trapped smells as well.

A.Most dogs like having a bath.
B.Wipe down your kitchen daily.
C.You find your home is always in a mess.
D.Smells often become trapped in the material.
E.Most dogs benefit from an once-a-week bath.
F.Obviously, it’s worthwhile to spend time on them.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused as my dad was very fierce and strict. After much persuasion, I gave in. There was a Will Smith movie on and I was a fan.

So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. As we were early, the lights were still on. We watched people come in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students playing truant(逃学)like us. As I turned around, I caught a glimpse of my uncle Andy and Aunt Jane walking in. They were kind and cared about me very much. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted. I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn’t want to see and Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking “Who? And where?” loudly. It made me sit even lower in my seat.

To make things worse, they came and sat in the row behind us and were saying to each other how I would have loved to come to this movie as I adored Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students playing truant. Soon the movie began and I was glad when the lights were turned off but I didn’t enjoy the movie at all for fear of being spotted. So, I sat there like an astronaut, peering over the front seat.

Every now and then I would secretly take a quick look at my aunt and uncle. I was sure they were also looking at me. Feeling nervous and anxious, I kept wondering how I could leave the cinema without being noticed.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些欠发达地区的可再生能源的开发利用,以促进当地的生活和生产。

10 . Imagine life without electricity. It may sound like a bad dream to you. But it’s a fact of life for nearly one billion people around the world.

Those left in the dark generally live in developing countries. Often, they live in poor, rural areas, far from big cities.     1     They could use oil generators (发电机) to make electricity, but most of these villagers can’t afford them.

Without electricity, common things in your life are just a distant dream there. People can never watch TV or play with mobile phones. Without power, people can’t even keep food from going bad.     2     Farming requires power in all kinds of different ways. Also, people without electricity can’t get clean water from the deep wells.

Many companies that make environmentally friendly products seem to have found a solution. They have developed ways to bring renewable energy to places that are “in the dark.”     3     It’s very different from energy sources such as gas and oil, which are burned to create electricity. Unlike gas and oil, renewable energy never runs out. And there’s no costly fuel to keep buying!

4     Instead, power is generated locally, through windmills, solar panels, and batteries. It is believed that renewable energy use will grow more rapidly in developing countries.

Children in Timor, Indonesia, once spent several hours a day getting water from the village well so that their families could farm, wash and cook. Now, pumps do the work — all powered by windmills. The windmills also provide electricity to nearby farms and homes.

With the help of low-cost renewable energy sources, some of the world’s poorest villages now have a renewed sense of hope.     5

A.Farming there gets very easy.
B.Growing food is a problem, too.
C.People there are looking forward to a bright future.
D.Renewable energy comes from the sun, wind, and water.
E.Running power lines to these distant villages is too expensive.
F.The villagers believe that renewable energy can help fight air pollution.
G.This energy solution doesn’t require expensive power lines or power factories.
