Johnny Reed was a little boy,     1     had never seen snow before he came to visit his grandmother. Until then, he had lived in a warm country, where the sun     2     (shine) down on the beautiful orange trees and the fields are always sweet with     3     (flower).

Johnny was standing by the window when the snow came down. “Oh mamma!” he cried     4     (joyful), “do come quick, and see these little white birds flying down from heaven. ”

“They are not birds, Johnny,” said mamma,     5     (smile). “That is only snow.”

“What is snow, mother?”

“The snowflakes are little drops of water that fall     6     the clouds. But the air is so cold that it turns them into snow. ”

She took a black hat from the desk and held out. “Johnny! I have caught a snowflake on     7     (I) hat. Look through this glass, and you will see     8     beautiful it is. ”

Johnny looked through the glass. There lay the snowflake like a lovely little star.

“Twinkle, twinkle, little star!” he sang in     9     (excite).

The next day Johnny had a good time in the snow, and when he came in, he said, “I love snow and I think snowballs are a great deal     10     (pretty) than oranges.”

I pick     1     a free newspaper at the Tube station and see the title “Hot! Hot! Hot!". Today, the temperature in London is expected     2     （reach）30 plus degrees. While going down the stairs and onto the platform, I feel like jumping into     3     volcano that is erupting. However, it is much     4     （bad）on the train because there is no air conditioning. With so many people on the train, I feel I am melting into one with the person     5     is next to me.     6     （stand）on the crowded hot train, I feel sick and uncomfortable.

With the temperature getting higher each year, I think I should be well prepared for the change. Perhaps, I should sell my flat and buy a boat so that I will be able to get to work when the Thames     7     （rise）. I will also speak with my manager about moving my office to the top floor. Most     8     （important）, I should learn swimming immediately so as to survive when the tall buildings are flooded. Since it's difficult to avoid     9     （disaster）on Earth, perhaps I should start thinking about moving to space.

In the end, I manage to make     10     to Bank station. Walking out of the station, I feel much more comfortable. Anyhow, it is only 30 degrees outside.

In most countries, turning 18    1    (mark) the start of adulthood. But what does reaching the age of majority really mean? Does it mean that you will be    2    (complete) in charge of your own life and able to express yourself in new and    3    (excite) ways? What new responsibilities will you have to take    4    ? Here, three young people tell us what turning 18 means, or meant, to them.

Bethany, 16, comes from Victoria, Australia. She won’t have the right to vote in the next general    5    (elect), because she won’t be old enough. She has been taking driving lessons but she isn’t allowed to take her driving test    6    she is 18.

Lin Ning, 19, is from Shanghai, China. At 18, although he could do things like    7    (get) a credit card and act on his desire to help others, there were still rules    8    (obey) and lessons to attend.

Morgan, 20, is from Florida, the US. He thought once he turned 18 and got    9    good job he would rent an apartment, but his salary was not high enough. The reality for him has been very different.     10    is hard for him to save money because of the household bills and high commute costs.
