Social Media Detox Today marks the last day of the Social Media Detox, Brenton High’s fundraising campaign for new sports equipment. At the start of the detox, over one hundred students had been persuaded to stop using social media, in ANY form, for seven days. This meant no messaging friends, no posting photos, no blogging — nothing. They had been promised money by family and friends for each day spent without using social media. They were excited. They were nervous. But could they do it? With the detox now finished, they’ve switched on their devices and they’re back online. I bet you’re as eager as I am to find out just how many have been motivated enough to last the full seven days! And what, if anything, has been learnt from the experience?
I lasted two days. The detox was more difficult to tolerate than I had expected. I felt like I had lost an arm! Not eating for two days would have been easier! But on reflection, I can see how much of my time had been occupied with checking my phone. I’m now trying to spend less time online and more time picking up my hobbies.
I lasted four days. On Monday, my classmate and I spoke about what we did at the weekend - it felt really strange not to already know what he had done. We would usually have posted pictures and updated our profiles. Doing the detox meant we had to talk and explain what we were doing and thinking! It made me realise the value of real contact that I had forgotten.
I managed the whole week! At first, I really felt I was missing out. Then, instead of messaging my friend. I went round t her house. Without our phones, we had a proper conversation for over two hours, without being distracted by messages from other people. It felt so good! Then I decided to visit a different friend every day. By the fifth day, I wondered - was I really missing out by not constantly checking my phone to see what everyone else was up to?
I did all seven days, too! To be honest, I didn’t find the detox too difficult, but I did give my phone to my dad to avoid giving in! My brother thought I should make full use of the time without my phone; so he took me to check out our local sports centre. An hour’s sport each day left me tired out and wanting to go to bed early. The detox made me healthier!
I’m embarrassed to say that I threw in the towel on the first day! I knew there was a party happening that evening, but without access to social media I couldn’t remember where it was! In the end, I turned on my phone to check, but couldn’t resist having a quick look at my social media accounts. What’s worse, I then spent so much time catching up on news, I almost missed the party!
The detox raised a total of $1,632.82 for new school sports equipment! Well done, everyone who took part! After reading the posts on this forum, it seems that something other than money has also been raised through the detox. Awareness of just how much we rely on social media can help us step away from it and communicate with each other better.

6 . It’s the end of August, and it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. For some, it’s a very exciting time. For others, however, they can feel very stressful. There are lots of things to do if you want to have a great first day at school.
Stay busy throughout the summer holiday. Usually those who struggle (挣扎) on their first days are people who spend too much of their summer holiday indoors and relaxing. So you should try to stay active and busy over the course of the holiday. There are lots of things you can do, such as getting a summer job or taking up a sport.
Continue learning over the summer holiday. People who struggle the most at first are those who aren’t learning over the holiday. Learning itself doesn’t have to be boring! You can learn about anything you want. Simply keeping your brain in the habit of learning will give you an extra advantage when it’s time to go back to school.
Spend time with friends that will attend the same school. If you have any friends living in the same neighborhood, there are chances that you will go to the same school! Make a point of creating stronger bonds (关系) with those friends. Spend part of your summer holiday with them, and grow closer. While there’s always some worry about going into the first day of school, having friends around that care about you makes it much easier.
Buy your school supplies. The most important thing you can do in preparation for your first day is make sure you have all of the equipment you need. Though the types of materials you’ll need differ from class to class, certain things, like pens and paper, will be used for all classes.

10 . Does getting up at the crack of dawn really hold the key to success?
1. You suddenly have time to exercise.
As someone who always prioritizes her social life over her fitness, I'd for a long time told myself I didn't have time for exercise. It turns out that when you get up four hours before you have to be at work, there's so much time to fill.
2. You'll feel smug.
Exercising in my living room at 6 am, whilst not only my flatmates but the majority of people everywhere were still asleep, felt kind of awesome. I spent my mornings curling my hair, painting my nails and doing smoky eye make-up and was always greeted by lovely comments.
3. You're hungrier all day.
One of the nicer parts of getting up earlier was having the time to cook myself nice breakfasts at home. But being awake longer and eating breakfast earlier seemed to mean I was hungrier all day long.
4.
On an average day when I'd be getting up at my usual time of 7:15 am, I'd go to bed around midnight. But if I had to get up at 5 am, there was no way I could stay up that late.
5. You'll be more efficient at work.
Incredibly, I actually achieved more at work than usual and was surprisingly productive. I genuinely felt energized throughout most of the working day all week long.
A.It's easy to get tired. |
B.I was more focused too. |
C.You'd be silly not to get moving. |
D.I will find it hard to get up earlier. |
E.I decided to try it and set my alarm for 5 am for a week. |
F.You have to cut short your social plans in the evening. |
G.My poor colleagues have had to go back to my regular look now. |
