1 . One day Frank was walking with his mother when they came to a pretty garden. Frank looked in, and saw that it had clean gravel(碎石)walks and beautiful flowers.
He called to his mother and said, "Mum, come and look at this pretty garden. I wish I might open the gate, and walk in."
The gardener(园丁)heard what Frank said, and kindly invited him and his mother to come into the garden.
Frank's mother thanked the man. Then she said to her son, "Frank, if I take you to walk in this garden, you must take care not to meddle(乱动)with anything in it."
Frank walked along the tidy gravel walks, and looked at everything, but touched nothing that he saw.
He did not step on any of the borders(草坪边的狭长花坛), and was careful that his clothes should not brush the tops of the flowers so that he might not break them.
The gardener was much pleased(满意的)with Frank, because he was so careful to behave well. He showed him the seeds, and told him the name of many of the flowers and plants.
While Frank was admiring the beauty of a flower, a little boy came to the gate, and finding it locked. He shook it hard, but it would not open. Then he said, "Let me in. Let me in. Will you not let me in this garden?"
"No," said the gardener, "I will not let you in, Tom. When I let you in yesterday, you meddled with my flowers, and pulled some of my fruit. I do not choose to let a boy into my garden who meddles with the plants."
Tom looked ashamed, and when he found that the gardener would not let him in, he went slowly away.
Frank saw and felt how much happier a boy may be by not meddling with what does not belong to him.
He and his mother then continued their walk in the garden, and enjoyed the day very much. Before they left, the gardener gave each of them some pretty flowers.

3 . It won’t be wrong to say that the hotel industry is one of the most competitive fields, and to survive in the hotel business, restaurateurs (餐馆老板) need to have certain unique strategies. To be more specific, to excel(突出)in the business, hotel owners need to follow a few things like, keeping a few secrets from customers, telling them half the truth, and at times even lying and pretending about certain things.
Calories in a dish
In the first place, the calorie count of a particular dish is seldom mentioned on the menu, and when it’s mentioned, most times it is inaccurate. Also, the waiters are not allowed to say anything about the calories in a dish and they either lie about it or just say, “All the information about it is available online.”
Extra sugar in your kids’ meals
You may wonder why your kid wants to go to the same restaurant every time, where he once had a particular pizza. Many restaurants often apply the trick of adding extra sugar to the kids’ meals so that they love it more and insist on going to the same place again and again.
“Homemade” salad is actually ready-made
Salads often labeled as “homemade” on the menu are not homemade. Some restaurants purchase salad dressings(沙拉酱) in large quantities and then add a few ingredients like fresh herbs, blue cheese, etc., and serve them as the homemade salad.
A last tip before you go, make sure that you never ask your waiter for recommendations from the menu. Waiters will never criticize anything that they serve, and in fact, may often do the opposite. At times, they may even recommend dishes that are expensive, or dishes that are not selling well.
These are some of the things that waiters will not share with you when you go to a restaurant. While most of these should not matter, you should never go to a restaurant that does not take cleanliness and hygiene(卫生) strictly.

4 . If I Had Magical Powers
Ever since I was a child, I have dreamed about having magical powers. If I had magical powers, I’d first hope I didn’t have any restrictions on them. I would prefer to use my fingers for magic as opposed to having wands. Just more convenient, I think.

5 . Today I went to a little convenience store in my town and at the door there was this man sitting on the floor looking sad with a sign saying “It's my birthday. Help please. ”I had nothing on me, so I did my shopping and just hoped he would stay there by the time I finished what needed to do.
I did my shopping quickly and bought him some chocolate and prepared a bank note for him. When I left the shop, he was still there so I started a little conversation. He said he was from Glasgow, Britain, and that he was homeless here without any relatives or friends. My heart went to him. No one should be homeless. We should all have the right to own a shelter in some shape of form. I gave him the chocolate and some money and when he looked at the bank note, he said, “Are you sure?” I said, “Yes, it is your birthday gift. ”
Moved deeply, he said, “You know it is really my birthday, I was born on the 16th of August 1970, and this is the best present I have received today. ” In my heart I knew that he was telling the truth despite just a few words written carelessly on a piece of cardboard. There are things one just knows in their heart. While I am writing this story, I realize that my brother was born in 1970. He could be my brother. He probably is someone's brother. 8 . As you drive the streets of Maine, you will often notice the various unwanted things people place outside, all with one extremely attractive word — FREE! And you will find most of them are serviceable, and often valuable!
So why don’t the state’s people just sell them? The answer is tied in with Maine’s belief in keeping it simple: It’s easier to give something away than to go through the trouble of advertising and then receiving phone calls, followed by the unavoidable bargaining. But there is also the light joy of seeing an item collected by someone who can use it.
What strikes me is the speed with which unwanted goods are taken away. There seems to be an army always ready to collect them at a moment’s notice.
Case in point: For years I had a large piece of old steel near my garage. I finally decided to pull it outside my house. No sooner had I turned my back than a pickup truck appeared. The driver jumped out and asked,“You are getting rid of this?” When I nodded, he lifted it, yelled a sincere “Thanks!” and drove away.
I have a guilty little secret. For me, the word “free” speaks of some deep desire to acquire, and to compete, in case someone else beats me to a free gift. I once carried a picnic table home. My son remarked, “but we already have a picnic table. Why did you get another one?” I replied, “Because it was free!”
As I write this, I am glancing out the window at a Windsor chair my neighbor has put out. The sign says FREE, but the chair is missing one leg. I could either repair it or use it for firewood. Hmm … Too late! While I hesitate, a senior citizen has pulled up. The chair is his, and I have a sense of loss.

C.He has a hobby of collecting tables. | D.He wants to become a strong competitor. |
A.The chair is of no use. | B.The chair is missing a leg. |
C.He fails to get the chair. | D.His neighbor rejects the chair. |

I was visiting my sister Mary, who has two boys, aged seven and five. They were throwing a ball around the living room. She asked them several times to stop, but they didn't listen to her. Finally, one of the boys threw the ball and knocked over a lamp. She shouted loudly at them for several minutes. Then, she sent them to their room. She looked at me and said, "They never listen to me."
Carmen
Dear Carmen,
Your sister needs to be clear to her children what behavior she expects. She should tell her boys, "Don't throw the ball in the house. If you throw the ball again, I'm going to take it." Then, she needs to do what she says. Her boys will soon learn to listen to her.
Dr. Bob
Dear Dr. Bob,
I walked into my two-year-old daughter's bedroom and found her coloring on the wall again with her crayons. I told her, "No! No! Never write on the wall with your crayons. You can only write on paper." My husband thought I was too easy on her and that she needed a spanking (打屁股). What is your opinion?
Debbie
Dear Debbie,
You dealt with the situation well. Children this age are too little to understand the relationship between their actions and a spanking. Use this as a warning; it's time to babyproof your home. Now that your little one is more active and curious (好奇的), what else can she reach? Check her room and your home for crayons, paints, medicines, cleaning products, and other things that might interest her.
Bob
