1 . It’s the end of August, and it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. For some, it’s a very exciting time. For others, however, they can feel very stressful. There are lots of things to do if you want to have a great first day at school.
Stay busy throughout the summer holiday. Usually those who struggle (挣扎) on their first days are people who spend too much of their summer holiday indoors and relaxing. So you should try to stay active and busy over the course of the holiday. There are lots of things you can do, such as getting a summer job or taking up a sport.
Continue learning over the summer holiday. People who struggle the most at first are those who aren’t learning over the holiday. Learning itself doesn’t have to be boring! You can learn about anything you want. Simply keeping your brain in the habit of learning will give you an extra advantage when it’s time to go back to school.
Spend time with friends that will attend the same school. If you have any friends living in the same neighborhood, there are chances that you will go to the same school! Make a point of creating stronger bonds (关系) with those friends. Spend part of your summer holiday with them, and grow closer. While there’s always some worry about going into the first day of school, having friends around that care about you makes it much easier.
Buy your school supplies. The most important thing you can do in preparation for your first day is make sure you have all of the equipment you need. Though the types of materials you’ll need differ from class to class, certain things, like pens and paper, will be used for all classes.

4 . One day I was driving a group of friends to a family seminar (研讨会) in Holmes County, Ohio. The village of Berlin was about an hour from our home. The seminar is usually half a day except on Saturday. In my hurry, I left the house without cash and without food. I comforted myself with the thought that I could go without them and it would allow me to concentrate more on the rich teaching that I would receive. It was a beautiful day and the drive was pleasant through countryside. I enjoyed conversation with my friends about the things of the Lord as we drove.
When we arrived I found my place and settled in to enjoy the seminar. The morning passed swiftly and I noticed no hunger. When the noon hour came I went to the van (面包车) to spend some time alone with the Lord. On the church grounds and in the shade of the tree people began to open large picnic baskets. I knew it would be impossible to think about this feast going on in front of me.
I started the van and drove into the village of Berlin. I found the Christian bookstore and spent some time browsing among the books. One of my favorite places on earth is a good bookstore. Standing there I sensed someone behind me. I turned and was shocked to see Lois standing there. She smiled “I couldn’t stand the thought of you going hungry so I brought you some money.” My heart welled up with love for her in that moment. We ate lunch and kissed goodbye. I went back to the seminar and she made the hour-long trip back home.
The two things stand out in my mind. First, Lois would know that I was hungry so I would not have to go without food. Second, when she went to the church and saw I was gone she knew exactly where she would find me.

5 . Asking the right questions is basically the magic key to any kind of personal or professional development. But it can be hard for many people.
Start by asking yourself
The most important aspect is to actually start by asking yourself the right kind of questions.
Once you've managed to ask yourself the right questions, it's time to focus on whom to address it to. To promote effective learning, you need to ask the right people. These are people who have gone before you and who have achieved what you want to achieve. It doesn't have to be in person. Reading their books and wondering “What made them successful?” is also a great way to start.
Ask open-ended questions
It's important to phrase your questions the right way. That means asking open-ended questions.

7 . We’re slowly becoming addicted to our smartphones. According to a study, adults check their smartphones 58 times a day. Neuroimaging (神经成像) research shows that too much screen time damages the brain.
Check emails only at fixed times. Instead of needlessly refreshing your mail app now and then, set one or more specific times to get the updates.
Turn off the notifications (通知消息). Product offers, the new streaming content, and likes/comments are some forms of notifications to distract you. They attract you to your phone and then make you be glued to your screen. So disable all those notifications and set a fixed time to check your essential apps.
Make a call instead of lengthy chats. Texting, messaging, and exchanging files throughout the day are some of the major reasons for considerable screen time.

Being sent to New York to help develop a new project, my parents would be too busy to look after me. So they decided to drive me to the village where my grandpa lived. He had been a teacher in a high school before he retired 3 years ago. I haven’t seen my grandfather for a long time. I could only remember he was a serious, well-dressed and handsome man.
When Mum pulled in the driveway, Grandpa Michael was weeding his garden. He stood up and greeted us with wide-open arms. In his muddy gloves and jeans, he looked nothing like the grandfather I remembered. I wasn’t expecting him to look so different.
After the hugs and kisses, Grandpa couldn’t wait to show off his garden, pointing out his almost-ripe tomatoes and complaining about the rabbits eating his lettuce. The man who had been devoted himself for ages to helping his students improve their grades, form good habits or change their bad behaviour now cared so much about gardening. He used to be a perfect teacher but now he was only a perfect gardener.
Mum returned, leaving only Grandpa and me. I was a little nervous as if we were strangers. My grandpa was a little, too. “Are you hungry? Let’s prepare for our dinner together, OK?” My grandpa turned to me and said proudly, “Now, Adam, you know I am very good at making pasta(意大利面)with delicious sauce. Would you like to try?” I eagerly nodded. “That’s good!” Grandpa said. “We’ll make some.”
We pulled up some vegetables from the garden, and then drove 15 miles to the nearest grocery, where Grandpa bought cheese and nuts. On the drive home Grandpa told me his students all liked the pasta he cooked especially the sauce.
Then Grandpa showed me how to mix eggs with flour to make pasta and then how to prepare the sauce. When everything was ready, he proudly served me a large plate of pasta. I put a forkful into my mouth and it was just terrible.
Paragraph 1:
“So,” Grandpa said, his eyes shining, “what do you think?”

Dear Kelly,
I’ve been back home safely from England. Thank you for the warmly reception during my stay in England.
Last week, I enjoyed me in your country. I visited the city museum and some places of interests, which made me to have a better understanding of British culture and history. Of course, I also make many new friends. Beside, I was lucky enough to staying at your home. I’ll never forget the days when we spent together. Here I especially thank you for the dictionary you offered me for a gift. It’s great help for me to learn English well. I’ll treasure and make full use of it.
Yours,
Han Meimei

Susan: Well, what do you have?
Gerry: Well, I have a science book,
Susan: 30? That’s too expensive for a broken book like that.
Gerry: Maybe so,
Susan:
Gerry: OK. I have
Susan: Huh.
Gerry: It’s up to you. You know, these things go fast. After all, opportunities lost never come again.
Susan: OK. I’ll take the writing book and the novel. I need both of those for sure.
Gerry: No more textbooks?
Susan: Not now.
Gerry: All right.
