Travel in BC
A Public Health Order for all health regions in British Columbia calls on all individuals, places of work and businesses in BC to significantly reduce social interactions and travel. The current order is in effect until February 1, 2021.
As many are currently making plans for the upcoming Winter Break, all members of the campus community are reminded all non-essential travel should be avoided. The current orders suspend all events and social gatherings to significantly reduce COVID-19 transmission related to social interactions. The order allows for university students to join family for the holidays as this is not considered a social gathering, but it is important to maintain a narrow household bubble.
International travel
If you plan to travel out of Canada during the Winter Break, make sure you are aware of current travel restrictions and are prepared for your trip. Carefully review the updated Travelling to Canada Guide for important information on who is eligible to travel, documents to prepare, ensuring you have health insurance, making a quarantine (self-isolation) plan, and more.
Measurement of body temperature and daily self-assessment when coining to campus
UBC's COVID-19 Campus Rules require that all students, faculty and staff must have their temperatures taken and assess themselves daily for COVID-19 symptoms prior to attending UBC premises. Please use the BC self-assessment tool at https：//bc. thrive, health/. Anyone experiencing symptoms should follow the guidance provided in the self-assessment tool.
Maintaining physical distancing and wearing non-medical masks
Public Health Orders require all members of our community maintain physical distance and wear non-medical masks. As a reminder, UBC (University of British Columbia) students, faculty, staff and visitors are required to wear non-medical masks, when indoors on our campuses.

2 . Local 10 Third EARTH Day Art Contest
Open only to Florida schools within the Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward County viewing area.
Local 10 is inviting South Florida art teachers and students, from grades K-12, to participate in its third annual EARTH Day Art Contest.
In the last two years, the popular, environmentally-centered contest has recognized two schools, Air Base K-8 in Homestead and Lawton Chiles Middle School in Hialeah, for their winning entries and awarded a total of $9,000 to the schools’ art programs.
As part of a class project, art students are encouraged to create a work of art with an environmental theme. The entry must be novel and unique. To enter the class project into the contest, the art teacher representing their students and schools must go to www. loca110. com, click on the contest link to enter and submit a photo of the class’s innovative EARTH Day work of art. The art teacher must fill out an entry form, giving school name, teacher name and class, address, email address and phone number. Only paintings and sculptures are eligible. Special consideration will be given to works of art featuring materials taken from nature.
Local 10 will determine the ten finalists. The final winner will be chosen from among the finalists by viewer votes on the Internet. Photos and entry forms may be submitted online from February 3,2020，until 11:59 p.m. March 9,2020. The voting period is from March 23,2020，through April 13,2020. Only timely submitted entries will be eligible to win. The winning school will be announced on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 and will receive $4,500 in art supplies for their school’s art department.

3 . In many countries, schools have long summer holidays, with shorter holidays in between. However, a new report suggests shortening school holidays to stop children forgetting what they have learnt during the long summer break. Instead of three school terms, it says, there should be five eight-week terms. And there should be just four weeks off in the summer, with a two-week break between the other terms.
Sonia Montero has two children at primary school and works full-time. She supports the idea. “The kids,” she says, “have much longer holidays than me and I can’t afford to take several weeks off work, so I need someone to take care of them. But nobody wants the work in the summer months — they all have holidays of their own.”
Not surprisingly, some young people disagree. Student Jason Panos says “It’s a stupid idea. I would hate staying at school in the summer. It’s unfair, too. The people who suggest this had long school holidays when they were young, but now they want to stop us enjoying the summer. The kids in Spain and America have much longer holidays than here, but they don’t forget everything they’ve learnt in a few months.”
Nadia Salib agrees. “Sure,” she says, “the first week at school after the summer is never easy, but you soon get back into it. The real problem round here is that kids get bored after so many weeks out of school, and then some of them start causing trouble. But the answer is to give them something to do, not make everyone stay in school longer.”
