Welcome back to school! Have you signed up for an after-school activity yet? Here are some of the activities you can try.
SPORTS TEAMS
Do you like sports? How about joining the football team? It has tryouts at 3:00 pm next Tuesday. Many of our best players have moved up to college. So now the team needs new players. For more information, meet our sports advisors, Ms. Matte or Mr. Stergis.
GOOD AT ART?
This year, your schoolmates in the school art club plan to paint a mural (壁画) on the wall by the office. So they need new members to help create it. Are you interested in drawing, painting or taking photographs? This club is for you. The first meeting of the school year is at 3:15 pm next Wednesday in room 221. Please see Ms. Greenway for more information.
NEW THIS YEAR
There are some new activities you can have a go at. Try the new after-school science club. It has plans to enter the national senior robotics competition this year. So if you want to try building a robot, this club is for you. See Mr. Larson in room 105 for more details. The club meets at 3:30 pm every Thursday.
Do you like acting? Are you good at singing? The school play this year is a musical — The Sound of Music. Come and try out for it at 3:10 pm next Monday in room 125.

2 . Whenever she was having a tough day, Selena Berry would look at the sky and imagine herself, flying high in the clouds above her troubled neighbourhood and challenging school life. "Flying makes you feel big, "Betty said. "You’re on top of everything. You look down and all you see is the view, the beauty. "
This summer, Berry and seven other African-American students in the Chicago area participated in a program to learn how to fly. The program is new and challenging for participants. In the end, successful students will graduate with a private pilot’s license.
The unique program is called Tuskegee Next. "It is a special effort to increase the number of African-Americans who can work as pilots. "said Stephen L. Davis, who owns a big company Wheaton , lllinois and founded the organization. The main mission of the group is to help students follow in the footsteps of the country’s first black military pilot Tuskegee. It costs about $25, 000 to take the lessons and pay for the flying time. But it is free for these students. Davis donates his own money and raises funds to cover the costs.
For much of his early life, Davis wanted to become a pilot. But growing up, he could not afford the expensive schooling. By the time he could afford lessons, he had a wife and children and did not want to take the risk. For the students, the benefits of learning to tly are greater than being pilots. "When you don’t see black pilots, you don’t think you can do it, he said. "Even if these kids don’t become pilots, learning to fly will give them confidence to do other great things. "
Tuskegee Next targets African-American teenagers from rough communities who might never have such a chance. The experience will change their lives and let them see a happy future. Some of the students in the program will receive a small stipend, which makes up for the summer jobs they would have otherwise.
All eight of the students have passed the written exam. Now they are spending hours piloting a Cessna airplane with an instructor. Some are already flying the planes alone. On a recent sunny afternoon, 20-year-old Quiana White spent about an hour alone in a Cessna airplane practicing turns. This was her first solo flight and her classmates crowded around her after she landed. "You’re not the same person once you go up on your own, "she said. "No matter what happens, I know I’m a pilot. "

In a weekend activity all the students at school had been invited to sign up sign up For ACE training,a program designed to have students become more active in their communities.T.J.was one of 405 students who signed up.
At the start of the activity,T.J.didn’t readily join the discussion groups and he didn’t seem to have much to say.But slowly,the interactive(互动)games drew him in.The next day,T.J.was very active in all the activities.By the and of the activity,he had joined the Homeless Project team.He knew something about poverty.hunger and hopelessness.The other students on the team were impressed with his concern and ideas.They elected T.J.cochairman of the team
A group of teachers were against the headmaster about T.J.Ware’s being elected cochairman.They reminded the principal.“The very first communitywide service project was to be a giant food Drive,organized by the Homeless Project team.He’ll probably steal half the food.” But Mr Coggs-All reminded them that the purpose of the ACE program was to uncover any positive passion(激情)that Students had.
Two weeks later.T.J.and his friends led a group of 70 students in a drive to collect food.They Collected a school record:2,854 cans of food in just two hours and the food took care of needy families In the area for 75 days.The local newspaper covered the event with a full-page article the next day for his doing something great and leading a food drive.
