2 . Three very strong women — my mother, my grandmother and Melinda — deserve big credit for helping me become the man I am today. But Blanche Caffiere, a very kind teacher and librarian I’ve never written about before, also had a huge influence on me.
Mrs. Caffiere died in 2006, shortly after reaching her 100th birthday. Before she passed away, I had an opportunity to visit her and thank her for the important role she played in my life.
When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle’s View Ridge Elementary, and I was a fourth grader. I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big weaknesses, like dysgraphia (书写障碍), and had a totally messy desk with books around. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read — something that was cool for girls but not for boys.
Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wings and helped make it okay for me to be a messy, nerdy boy who was reading lots of books. She pulled me out of my shell. She started by asking questions like, “What do you like to read?” and “What are you interested in?” Then she found me a lot of books. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read. Once I’d read them, she would make the time to discuss them with me. “Did you like the book? Why? What did you learn?” She listened to what I had to say patiently. Through those book conversations in the library and in the classroom we became good friends.
Teachers generally don’t want to burden their students with extra reading beyond the homework they’ve given. But I learned from Mrs. Caffiere that my teachers had so much knowledge to share. Looking back on it, there’s no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. I should give great thanks to the devoted teacher and librarian who helped me find my strengths when I was nine years old. It’s remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.

6 . Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow found me in November, and I knew I’d be forever changed as a writer and reader after reading it.
The day after booking a trip in November to Russia, I looked through Amazon to find something I could read during the trip. Then I saw A Gentleman in Moscow, which a friend had recommended to me before, so I bought it. After reading the summary, I knew the story was about Count Rostov who, during the early part of the last century, was sentenced to spend the rest of his life within the Hotel Metropol in Moscow. Guess what ...I had booked the Hotel Metropol the day before!
It actually took me longer than usual to finish during the trip, because I’d read particular sentences or paragraphs or thoughts and had to set the book down for a moment. The way Amor Towles thinks is unique, and his choice of words is also amazing.
Here’s my favorite: A captain visiting the hotel is sitting at the same bar as the Count. He notices the Count swirling (旋动) his glass and moves close to him. The captain says, “You seem like something is weighing on your mind. I mean, you set that brandy in motion about half an hour ago. If you’re not careful, the vortex (旋涡) you’ve created will drill a hole right through the floor and we’ll all end up in the basement.” You can see the Count clearly at that bar, swirling his glass, having heavy thoughts.
And, oh, the character. I still remember the Count’s words,“... what matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause (掌声); what matters is whether we have the courage to move forward despite the uncertainty of acclaim (赞扬) .”
Each day we pick new favorites in all things. But for now, I can say with certainty that A Gentleman in Moscow is the best book I’ve ever read.

7 . In school, students are reminded every day that reading is beneficial. However, only a few of them really enjoy it when forced to read what doesn’t attract their interest.
Of course, when you pick up new words, you will not only use them in your everyday conversations.
Besides, reading can improve your concentration. Concentration is necessary for your writing. Without it, it’s difficult to get the words on paper or screen. Readers can develop the skill of focusing their attention on the story they are reading. That’s why many people can read even when on public transport.
Last but not least, reading informative pieces will provide knowledge that you can use in your own writing.
A.If you love reading stories, this still applies. |
B.These new words will also influence your writing. |
C.Reading with a partner in a book club is also a great choice. |
D.First of all, you have to decide what you want to write about. |
E.This ability to focus on one thing at hand can be perfectly used for writing. |
F.Actually, the more you read, the more words and expressions you can master. |
G.You probably haven’t paid much attention to the possible benefits of reading. |
8 . It’s a cliché (陈词滥调) that everyone’s too busy these days. But one specific complaint is made especially mournfully: There’s never any time to read.
What makes the problem thorny is that the usual time-management techniques don’t seem sufficient. The web’s full of articles offering tips on making time to read: “Give up TV” or “Carry a book with you at all times.” But in my experience, using such methods to free up the odd 30 minutes doesn’t work. Sit down to read and work-related thoughts keep spinning (旋转) — or else you’re so exhausted that a challenging book’s the last thing you need. The modern mind, Tim Parks, a novelist and critic, writes, “is showing more tendency toward communication... It is not simply that one is interrupted; it is that one is actually ready for interruption.” Deep reading requires not just time, but a special kind of time which can’t be obtained merely by becoming more efficient.
In fact, “becoming more efficient” is part of the problem. Thinking of time as a resource to be maximised means you approach it for your specific purpose, judging any given moment should be well spent which advances toward some goal. Deep reading, by contrast, depends on being willing to risk inefficiency, goallessness, even time-wasting. Try to arrange it in as a to-do list item and you’ll manage only goal-focused reading — useful, sometimes, but not the most fulfilling kind. “The future comes at us like empty bottles along an unstoppable and nearly endless conveyor belt (传送带),” writes Gary Eberle in his book Sacred Time, and “we feel a pressure to fill these different-sized bottles (days, hours, minutes) as they pass, for if they get by without being filled, we will have wasted them.” No mindset could be worse for losing yourself in a book.
So what does work? Perhaps surprisingly, scheduling regular times for reading. You’d think this might fuel the efficiency mindset, but in fact, Eberle notes, such habitual behaviour helps us “step outside time’s flow” into “soul time.” You could limit distractions by reading only physical books, or on single-purpose e-readers. “Carry a book with you at all times” can actually work, too – providing you dip in often enough, so that reading becomes the common state from which you can temporarily get away to take care of business, before getting dipped again. On a really good day, it no longer feels as if you’re “making time to read,” but just reading, and making time for everything else.
1. Which can best replace the underlined word “thorny” in Paragraph 2?A.tough | B.pleasant | C.slight | D.essential |
A.The modern mind is not shaped. |
B.Repetition is required in deep reading. |
C.People always forget to carry a book with them. |
D.Deep reading is not fully guaranteed. |
A.To update their to-do lists. | B.To fulfill their passing time. |
C.To carry out their big plans. | D.To pursue carefree reading. |
A.People should devote themselves to reading for fear of wasting time. |
B.Scheduling regular times for reading is helpful in achieving deep reading. |
C.Deep reading can only be achieved after dealing with all the daily businesses. |
D.Distractions can be avoided by developing online reading habits. |
