1 . How to Host a Book Swap

If you love the written word, you probably have a pile of books somewhere in your home.     1    If you’re becoming alarmed at the price of new books, hold a book swap. The idea is pretty simple Guests bring books to share, and the accumulated books are then redistributed to new owners. If you’ve never held a book swap before, here are a few tips.

Send out invitations. A formal invitation should include the address, date and duration. A 2 to 3 hour party gives everyone a chance to enjoy the time and leave happy.     2    Three books is pretty standard. If you want extras around, don’t set a maximum.

Provide enough space. Some people use one large dining table and start piling up books when they run out of space.     3    They can offer people a chance to consider their selections without having to juggle piles of books while they’re doing it.

4    To make sure guests can find what interests them, the easiest way to do this is to mart sections on the table for specific types of books. When people arrive, hand out a brief set of instructions, asking them to place their books in the right category.

Make it a party. When you’re in the planning stages, think party and you’ll be one step ahead of the game.     5    Create some good interactions with a little background music. Have an area set aside for coats and bags. Remember, you are hosting a party!

A.Organize books by types.
B.Prepare different kinds of books.
C.Offer food that’s easy to eat in a bite or two
D.However, the area around the book table may be small.
E.But there’s always a new book around that interests you.
F.Actually, a couple of tables can take care of the problem.
G.It’s also a good idea to limit the number of books guests bring

文章大意:本文是一篇书评。文章主要介绍了Tara Westover的自传体图书《Educated》,包括其主要内容、主题和作者的观点。

2 . “You can love someone and still choose to say goodbye to them.” Tara now says. It’s hard to understand these words until I read Tara Westover’s memoir Educated.

In her book Educated, Tara was raised in rural Idaho. Her dad believed the world was coming to an end, and that the family should interact with the health and education systems as little as possible. Major medical crises went untreated-her mother never recovered from her brain injury. Because Tara and her six siblings worked at their father’s junkyard, none of them received proper homeschooling.

Educated is an amazing story. I found it fascinating how it took studying philosophy and history in school for Tara to trust her own perception of the world. Before stepping foot in a classroom until she was 17, her worldview was entirely shaped by her dad. It wasn’t until she went to Brigham Young University that she realized there were other perspectives on things her dad had presented as fact. Eventually, she earned her doctorate in history from Cambridge. Of the seven Westover siblings, three earned Ph. D.s. I think their childhood experience made them tough and helped them persevere. When you meet Tara, she is never cruel even when mentioning her childhood traumas, including the physical abuse she suffered. I was impressed by how she talks so openly about how ignorant she once was.

Educated touches on the divides in our country: rural versus urban, college-educated versus not. Since she’s spent her whole life moving between these two worlds, I asked Tara what she thought. “I worry that education is becoming a stick that some people use to beat other people into submission or becoming something that people feel arrogant (傲慢的) about,” she said. “I think education is really just a process of self-discovery-of developing a sense of self and what you think. I think of it as this great mechanism of connecting and equalizing.”

Tara’s process of self-discovery is beautifully captured in Educated. She’s a talented writer, and I suspect this book isn’t the last.

1. How did Tara’s upbringing shape her worldview?
A.It prepared her for a successful academic career.
B.It limited her access to education and critical thinking.
C.It encouraged her to embrace different perspectives and ideas.
D.It instilled in her a strong sense of independence and resilience.
2. Which could best describe Tara according to the text?
A.Perseverant and honest.B.Talented and weak.
C.Cruel and accomplished.D.Romantic and determined.
3. According to Tara, what should education primarily involve?
A.Exploring more of oneself and individual thoughts.
B.Following established social rules and regulations
C.Strengthening divisions and in equalities among people.
D.Obtaining certain rights and privileges to defeat others.
4. What is the text type of this passage?
A.Autobiography.B.News report.
C.Persuasive essays.D.Book review.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了比利时漫画家Herge创作的漫画作品《丁丁历险记》以及其受欢迎的原因。

5 . Cartoons suit the way we like information to be presented these days: vividly and in small amounts. We are used to cartoons and comic series that take a biting look at modern life or provide a bit of escapism. But recently we have seen an increase in the number of comic books: booklength comics with a single, continuous narrative. Historically, comic books were not popular outside France, Belgium, Japan, and the US. The exception is the worldwide popularity of a young reporter-detective from Belgium, Tintin.

The creation of the Belgian cartoonist Herge, The Adventures of Tintin first appeared in a Belgian newspaper in 1929. Each story appeared as a cartoon series week by week, but soon after was republished in book form. One of the main attractions for readers was that they were taken to parts of the world they had never seen and probably never would: Russia, Congo, America. Herge himself only traveled outside Belgium later in life, but his passion was educating his readers about other cultures and places.

Two things set Herge apart as a comic novelist. The first was his technical drawing skills: with just a few simple lines he could communicate a particular facial expression or movement. The second was the careful research he put into his stories. In The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin follows an opium-smuggling (鸦片走私) ring to North Africa; in King Ottakar’s Scepter, he makes an attempt at a military coup (政变) in a central European country. While telling these stories, Herge also made a fine balance between serious topics and humor.

Tintin had more than his fair share of adventures, but perhaps the greatest is his journey to the Moon, told in Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon. Written in 1953, sixteen years before the first Moon landing, the stories show a remarkable eye for technical detail and feeling for the nature of space travel. In the early 1950s, few could imagine what it was like to be looking down at our planet from outer space. And that is Herge’s true gift: to understand what a place was like without ever having been there.

1. What can be learned about comic books from the passage?
A.They mostly involve detective stories.
B.They were just popular in several countries.
C.They present information in small amounts.
D.The Adventures of Tintin is the world’s first comic book.
2. Which of the following is an attraction of The Adventures of Tintin for readers?
A.The stories were created in Belgium, a European country.
B.The stories were the first comic novel published in book form.
C.The stories used to be cartoon series that appeared week by week.
D.The stories enable them to learn about places they have never been to.
3. Why are The Crab with the Golden Claws and King Ottakar’s Scepter taken for examples?
A.To show Herge liked touching on serious topics.
B.To show Herge based stories on research results.
C.To illustrate Herge himself had a good sense of hurnor.
D.To illustrate Herge was expert at applying technical drawing skills.
4. Which of the following statements is true of Herge?
A.He had been longing for a trip to the Moon.
B.He never had any chance to leave Belgium for travelling.
C.He could describe accurately those experiences he never had.
D.He devoted himself to education before creating comic books.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者通过讲述自己在图书馆凭封面来判断并挑选一本书的经历告诉我们,有时以貌取人还是可取的。

7 . I’m in middle school, and not that good at reading. I am a little behind and hate the books we are made to read. But I want to get better at reading. I don’t like being the weakest reader in the class. I want to change. I know I need help when it comes to reading. I’m hopeful that I can overcome (克服) my weakness if I try to find some ways and work hard.

So I go to the library every weekend. Last Saturday I went straight to the Young Adult section to search. There were hundreds of books to choose from. Finally, I saw a cover that was shiny, and it reflected (反射) the light and caught my eye. I saw that it was blue — I liked blue. So I picked it up and read the back. It sounded interesting, although it was the second book in the series, I got it. I read that book in two days, and found it was so attractive, so I read the whole series in a week.

By judging (判断) a book by its cover, I was not only able to pick up a book that became one of my favourites, but I also didn’t have to pick up hundreds of books that I may not like. If I never judged a book by its cover, I might have never found that book in the first place.

This advice is suitable for other things in life as well, especially when it comes to people. It’s not always exact, but by judging a person by their appearance — the way they dress, talk, and act — you can quickly see if you want to read their general condition by having a conversation with them. If you enjoy them like you enjoy a good book, then you can keep them in your inner circle — the people that you care about and who care about you.

1. Why does the writer visit the library?
A.He is the weakest reader.
B.He begins to like books.
C.He needs to borrow a book.
D.He hopes to improve his reading skills.
2. Which can best describe the writer in the text?
A.Caring and helpful.
B.Positive and hard-working.
C.Adventurous and unique.
D.Outgoing and admirable.
3. What part of the book attracted the writer at first?
A.The back.B.The pictures.
C.The cover.D.The introduction.
4. What does the writer probably agree with?
A.What pains us trains us.
B.Judging a book by its cover.
C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

8 . Book Recommendation

Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter

This is a funny telling of how a sports commentator turned his two dogs into Internet sensations (轰动). If you’ve seen videos of dogs and laughed your but t off, the book provides the same humor, along with wonderful pictures of dogs and Scottish highlands. Let’s face it—who doesn’t need a good laugh, and pictures of dogs?

—Isabel Quintana

Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker

A mystery series focused on Bruno Courrèges, the chief of police in the small town of St. Denis in the Périgord region of southwestern France. Walker brings his knowledge both as a journalist and as a resident of St. Denis to these pages, as he explores the culture and socio-economic changes occurring in contemporary rural France.

—Edward Copenhagen

Land of Aeolia by Ilias Venezis, translated by Therese Sellers

The author writes of his peaceful childhood summers in Anatolia, before the horrors of World War I and the loss of his homeland. This is a beautiful novel that is beyond language and country and brings back memories of a lost world. I have found some English translations of modern Greek literature lacking the ability to express the richness of the Greek language, but Sellers deals with this playful and magical language beautifully.

—Rhea Lesage

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

I wish everyone hoping to start a home garden could read the chapter The Three Sisters. The author, an authority on plant study, describes how the three work and play together. She expertly creates a sense of mystery and beauty of everyday life. And she reminds readers how much we could learn from our sisters and brothers.
