1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A few years ago someone gave us a robot cleaner as a gift. We already had a lady who cleaned our house regularly and I didn’t really see us using this new machine, so it just sat in its box for quite some time.

One family in our neighborhood were moving away the next week to a new house and I thought of asking the mother whether this robot cleaner might be something she could use. And it turned out that she eagerly replied YES! Her new place had hardwood floors and her daughter was asking if they could get a robot cleaner but she said they would have to wait and see…and now they didn’t have to buy one!

I couldn’t tell you how overjoyed I was to see the daughter’s cheerful looks when she came over to get it. And she was even more excited about the flower seeds I gave her from our backyard. I hoped they would plant the seeds in their new home so that they would always have a piece of our circle with them. She was really touched. She also told me how moved they were when they saw a big pink heart on the front wall of our house while they were having their going-away party. I told her I wouldn’t wash it off even after they moved. I liked being reminded of how our hearts were connected to everyone.

The nice thing was that the daughter would still be working in our town, and I told her that if she ever needed to stay over instead of driving 45 minutes to the new house, our home would be always here for her. Soon after, a snowstorm hit our area and blocked all the roads.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mary tried to hold her breath. She moved away slightly, but Amy only moved closer and continued talking.

Mary thought to herself, “Why does she always have to sit next to me?” Amy didn’t seem to notice that Mary was trying to move away, and she leaned in closer. Mary wanted badly to tell Amy that she didn’t smell very good, but how could she without hurting her feelings?

When Mary got home from school, she complained to her mother. “There’s a girl named Amy who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad. Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”

“Well, try to be nice to her,” said her mother. “Maybe she’s having a hard time at home. You never know what a person’s home life is like.”

For the rest of the week, Mary tried to be a good friend to Amy. There were times when they had fun talking and playing together, especially on the days when Amy bathed. But on the days when she smelled bad, Mary still found it very hard to be her friend.

One morning, while getting her hair combed for school, Mary brought the subject up again with her mother.

“I don’t want to be friends with Amy anymore,” she told her mother.

Her mother’s hands froze in midair. Mary turned to see what the matter was. Her mother looked upset. Mary wondered what she had said made her mother react this way.

“I don’t think you understand Amy’s situation, so let me ask you this…” Her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school? Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day? And your clothes are washed and neatly ironed?”

“You and Daddy,” answered Mary.

“Do you live in a happy family? Do you have a good Dad and Mum?” Then her mother encouraged her to learn more about Amy before she decided whether or not to be friends with Amy.

3 . There is a difference between being an acquaintance(熟人)and being a friend. An acquaintance is someone whose name you know, who you see every now and then, who you probably have something in common with and who you feel comfortable around. It's a person that you can invite to your home and share things with. But they are the people who you don't share your life with, and whose actions sometimes you don't understand because you don't know enough about them.

On the other hand, a friend is someone you love. Not that you are “in love” with them, but you care about them and you think about them when they are not there. They are the people whose pictures you have and whose faces are in your head regardless. Friends are the people you feel safe around because you know they care about you. They tell you the truth and you do the same.

Friends are the people who won't laugh at you or hurt you, and if they do hurt you they try hard to make it up to you. They are the people you love, regardless of whether you realize it.

Friends are the people that hold the rings at your wedding, or maybe they are the people you marry. They are the people who stop you from making mistakes and help you when you do. They are the people whose hands you can hold, or who you can hug or give a kiss to. They understand the things you do and they love you for them.

They stick with you and stand by you. They hold your hands. They watch you live and you watch them live. Your life is not the same without them.
