文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。作者独自在纽约时和犹太朋友瑞秋共度平安夜,作者度过了愉快的夜晚,也明白了尊重并拥抱文化多样性的重要性。

2 . As Christmas Eve approached, I found myself in New York City, far from my family and friends in Taiwan. I was feeling homesick and lonely, but my Jewish friend, Rachel, who, like me, doesn’t get connected with Christmas due to any religious things, invited me to join her for a dinner in a Chinese restaurant. She explained that it was a tradition for many Jewish people to celebrate this holiday by eating Chinese food on Christmas Eve.

We went to Jing Fong, a fancy restaurant in Chinatown. The place was packed with people, and the atmosphere was lively and festive. We ordered a variety of dishes. Everything was delicious, and I felt grateful to be sharing this experience with Rachel. As we ate, we talked about our families and our cultures. We laughed and joked, and for a moment, I forgot about my homesickness.

A moment later, a group of carolers (唱圣诞歌的人) came into the restaurant, singing Christmas songs. At first, I was puzzled. Why were they singing in a Chinese restaurant? But then I realized that this was part of the magic of New York City. People from all different cultures and backgrounds could come together and celebrate the holidays in their own way. Rachel and I joined in the singing, and soon the whole restaurant was filled with music. It was a beautiful moment, and I felt blessed to be part of it.

What a night! I learned that even when you’re far from home, you can still find joy and connection with others. Rachel and I may come from different cultures, but we shared amazing food, joyful music, and most importantly heartfelt company. And that’s exactly what all the holidays are all about.

7 . Unique Birthday Traditions

The editors of our international editions share traditions reserved for counting yourself one year older.

When someone turns 50, a large doll will be placed in the birthday person’s garden or by heir front door; men have an “Abraham” doll, women a “Sarah”, based on a Bible passage.

A child’s first birthday is often celebrated with balloons and specially made “fairy bread”. Some families in Australia also mark the age of 21 with a souvenir “key to the door”, representing the young adult’s privilege to come and go from the family home as they please.

9 . Wedding Traditions and Superstitions (迷信)

Good luck and bad luck

Hey, brides, hide a sugar cube into your glove according to Greek culture, the sugar will sweeten your union. In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the “best day” to marry. Ancient Romans studied pig insides to determine the luckiest time to marry. Rain on your wedding day is actually considered good luck, according to Hindu tradition. For good luck, Egyptian women pinch (掐) the bride on her wedding day. Ouch!

It’s got a ring to it

Diamonds set in gold or silver became popular as engagement rings among wealthy Venetians toward the end of the 15th century. A pearl engagement ring is said to be bad luck because its shape echoes that of a tear. Snake rings dotted with ruby eyes were popular wedding bands in Victorian England, which symbolized elernity. Aquamarine is said to ensure along, happy marriage.

Show off at a party

The Roman goddess Juno rules over marriage, the hearth and childbirth, hence the popularity of June weddings. Princess Victoria established the tradition of playing Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus” during her wedding in 1858. The bride stands to the groom’s left during a Christian ceremony, while the Catholic tradition of “posting the banns” to announce a marriage originated as a way to ensure the bride and groom were not related.

Fashionable lore

In Asia, wearing robes with embroidered cranes symbolizes loyalty for the length of a marriage. In Korea, brides wear bright hues of red and yellow to take their vows (宣誓). In Denmark, brides and grooms traditionally cross-dressed to confuse evil spirits.
