文章大意:本文是一片说明文。主要解释了多巴胺如何成为小鼠REM睡眠的触发器,并研究表明这可能有助于理解和治疗人类的睡眠障碍。

1 . A quick increase of dopamine (多巴胺) shifts mice into a dreamy stage of sleep. In the mice’s brains, the chemical messenger triggers rapid-eye-movement sleep, or REM, researchers report in the March 4 Science.

These new results are some of the first to show a trigger for the shifts. Understanding these transitions in more detail could ultimately point to ways to treat sleep disorders in people.

Certain nerve cells in the ventral tegmental area of the mouse brain can pump out dopamine, a molecule that has been linked to pleasure, movement and learning, which is then delivered dopamine to the amygdalae, two almond-shaped structures deep in the brain that are closely tied to emotions.

Using a molecular sensor that can tell exactly when and where dopamine is released, the researchers saw that dopamine levels rose in the amygdalae just before mice shifted from non-REM sleep to REM sleep.

Next, the researchers forced the mice into the REM phase by controlling those dopamine-producing nerve cells using lasers and genetic techniques. Compelled with light, the nerve cells released dopamine in the amygdalae while mice were in non-REM sleep. The mice then shifted into REM sleep sooner than they typically did, after an average of about two minutes compared with about eight minutes for mice that weren’t prompted to release dopamine. Stimulating these cells every half hour increased the mice’s total amount of REM sleep.

Additional experiments suggest that these dopamine-making nerve cells may also be involved in aspects of narcolepsy (嗜睡症). A sudden loss of muscle tone, called cataplexy, shares features with REM sleep and can accompany narcolepsy. Stimulating these dopamine-making nerve cells while mice were awake caused the mice to stop moving and fall directly into REM sleep.

The results help clarify a trigger for REM in mice; whether a similar thing happens in people isn’t known. Earlier studies have found that nerve cells in people’s amygdalae are active during REM sleep.

Many questions remain. Drugs that change dopamine levels in people don’t seem to have big effects on REM sleep and cataplexy. But these drugs affect the whole brain, and it’s possible that they are just not selective enough.

1. What can we learn from this passage?
A.People with sleep disorders could benefit from the research.
B.Dopamine is generated in two almond-shaped structures.
C.Dopamine levels rose after mice shifted to REM sleep.
D.An increase of dopamine can trigger REM in people.
2. The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to ______.
A.the entire brain
B.REM sleep and cataplexy
C.drugs affecting dopamine levels
D.people suffering from sleep disorders
3. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce two stages of sleep of all animals.
B.To explain dopamine as a trigger for REM in mice.
C.To present a new way to cure sleep disorders in people.
D.To propose a pioneer research interest in brain structure.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了人工智能在医疗方面的应用。

2 . What was once science fiction is now a part of our everyday lives, as artificial intelligence (AI) is something that many of us live alongside. According to Statista, in 2019, 3.25 billion virtual assistants were used worldwide and that figure is predicted to be more than double by 2014.

AI is doing more for us than setting reminders, making recommendations, and offering us weather reports. In fact, it could be about to change the healthcare landscape entirely. It is estimated that one in eight people today use health apps regularly. And AI has more to offer.

Dr Emilia Molimpakis is a neuroscientist who co-founded thymia, a platform that uses AI powered games to help doctors spot depression.

“I was inspired to start thymia after seeing my best friend struggle with depression,” she says, “I saw her try to go through the psychiatric (精神病学的) system and fall through the cracks. Despite being seen by a psychiatrist, she ended up trying to take her own life. When that happened, I was the one who found her, and this experience impressed me.”

Aside from blaming herself for not recognizing the signs sooner, what she could not get her head around was how the psychiatrist should not see this coming. She realized that the tools psychiatrists used were still these old-fashioned, pen-and-paper questionnaires that have been found, time and again, to be subjective and not reflecting a patient’s actual mental health status. So, thymia was born.

But as we look into the future, what should we be aware of? Before we dive in head-first, there are still questions we need to answer. As Dr Molimpakis points out, it’s vitally important that AI tools used in healthcare must be trained on a diverse data set that is typical of all groups of people. It should also be used alongside, and in addition to, professional care—not as a replacement. We should also consider carefully how our health data is stored and used. These are topics that both users and professionals have a responsibility to consider.

1. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.An AI guide.B.A research paper.
C.A health magazineD.An encyclopedia.
2. What is the purpose of creating thymia?
A.To cure depression.B.To train doctors.
C.To detect signs of illness.D.To design questionnaires.
3. What do the underlined words “get her head around” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Get over.B.Figure out.C.Make up.D.Turn down.
4. What can we learn about the application of AI tools in the last paragraph?
A.It needs further improvement.
B.It was a double-edged sword.
C.It will develop into professional care.
D.It can make professionals more responsible.

One day, the three were playing at home. Harper was playing mom, feeding her mother, then her teddy bear and finally herself. Suddenly, Paris started choking on a piece of cookie. Soon, the cookie was at the back of her throat. The two girls started hitting her back at once. After about a minute of hitting her back, Kallie went to call an ambulance as she started to worry. As she did this the other girl carried on doing what she had been doing and thankfully the cookie finally came up.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。讲述了在工作场所也应该配备急救设备,药物,能施救的人员等,也说明了其重要性。

4 . What would happen today, if there was an accident at your workplace? Would employees know what to do? Would the injured person get the best possible care?

When an accident happens, a first-aid programme that meets the requirements of the law and is made to the type and size of the workplace can really make a difference between life and death, or between recovery and lasting disablement (伤残).

Employers should make sure that all employees know where emergency information is posted at the workplace. The emergency notice should show the phone numbers of the closest ambulance service, rescue unit, fire police station, and hospital. The amount of time it takes to look up one of these important numbers can make a big difference to a seriously injured person. The place of first-aid equipment and rescue equipment should also be posted.

All workplaces should have a person with first-aid or medical training in case of an emergency. First-aid equipment and supplies, including a variety of dressings and instruments, as well as an up-to-date first-aid book, should be stored where they can be reached quickly and easily in case of an accident. These supplies should be inspected frequently, making sure they are kept in sanitary (卫生的) and usable conditions and re-stored after use. Larger workplaces may need more than one fully-equipped first-aid bag.

In lonely workplaces, emergency supplies and an action plan are especially important. At least one person trained in first aid should always be on-site (在现场的). If first aid is not given properly, it can sometimes hurt rather than help an injured person, or even be harmful to the person giving first aid.

All workers should know who is trained to give first aid on-site, where first-aid equipment is put, and what medical professionals or medical instruments should be found if a medical emergency happens.

A.The importance of a proper first-aid programme at the workplace.
B.The possibility to make a first-aid programme.
C.The requirements of the law about a first-aid programme.
D.Difference between the type and size of the workplace.
2. What should you do for a seriously injured person?
A.Report the present conditions to the employers.
B.Give first aid to him right away all by yourself.
C.Look up and call the emergency telephone numbers quickly.
D.Run to the rescue centre to get first-aid equipment.
3. Why are first-aid equipment and supplies stored in workplaces?
A.To be reached quickly and used to rescue in time.
B.To meet the requirements of the government.
C.To deal with the inspection of higher departments.
D.To make a medical training for the employees.
4. According to the text, what are all workers required to do?
A.Be responsible for the result of the injured person.
B.Know the exact place of first-aid equipment.
C.Be trained to give first aid to the injured in an accident.
D.Be far away from the accident place.

6 . Scientists believe they have found help for older people suffering from poor eyesight. The solution is shining a special red light in the eyes for three minutes. Staring at a deep red light for three minutes a day can greatly improve falling eyesight, finds a new University London-led (or UCL-led) study, the first of its kind in humans. They believe the discovery could signal the dawn of new affordable home-based eye therapies (疗法), helping millions of people globally with naturally falling eyesight.

Doctors say a three-minute daily dose of the special red light for two weeks could help improve age-related vision problems. However, they say not any red light will help improve eyesight. The co-author of a study into the effects of red light and vision in older people explained why. Professor Glen Jeffery said: “I strongly suggest that people do not just go and buy a red light off the web. They have to produce the right wavelength (波长) and be reliable. We are looking for a business partner to do this and to price them at under around $20 to $25.”

The study was carried out by a team from University College London. Researchers conducted tests on 24 men and women aged between 28 and 72. They said some cells that help us process light had worsened in the older people.

Doctors say their red light improved the ability of these people to detect different colors, particularly blue. The vision of these older people improved by as much as 22 percent. Doctor Jeffrey said: “Populations are ageing rapidly and this is going to be a major issue in the future. We need to gear up (为……做准备) for this.” He added: “If you can’t see clearly you can’t read or watch TV. You also tend to fall down and break bones. Our lights are a step in this direction.”

1. What could help older people suffering from poor eyesight?
A.using flashlight in dark place.
B.a new brochure for shining their eyes.
C.one medicine for curing poor eyesight.
D.shining red light in their eyes for several minutes.
2. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?

A.Researchers conducted tests on age 18-73.
B.Aged people tend to be weak in sight.
C.Red light can not improve detecting colors .
D.Population will be a big challenge .
4. What is Jeffrey’s conclusion?
A.Buy red light on the web.
B.You can read by red light.
C.Red light may help older people.
D.Older people will see clearly.

7 . People who have kids live longer than those who remain childless, an academic study has suggested. Researchers believe it is because adults’ immune systems are “refreshed” when kids go to nursery and start picking up infections.

During the course of someone’s life, their immune system can become weaker. But when kids start bringing infections home, their parents’ immune systems get a workout. Non-parents — unless they are teachers or nurses perhaps — do not get the same exposure to infection.

Writing in the journal Scientific Reports, Miguel Portela said parents had less risk of dying from infection than non-parents and if they did, it was about five years later. He said that “a parent’s immune system is refreshed by a child’s infections at a time when their own protection starts wearing thin.” He added, “With this improved immune system, the parent has a better chance to defend whatever infections that might strike when old and weak and parenthood is rewarded in individual terms through an improved immunization against infections.” Naturally there are other reasons why some people live longer than others, but they may not be comparable with becoming a parent. The academics say that high income and house ownership are always associated with higher survival but less so than having children.

Mr. Portela admits the research is far from complete, saying that while the results “record a relationship between the presence of children and death rate, the specific transmission mechanisms remain unclear. He acknowledges the presence of other, perhaps behavioral factors in parents which result in changed death rate compared to individuals without children.” He adds, “While the relationships of lifestyle choices such as smoking, obesity, drinking and other behavioral factors with life expectancy and causes of death are well studied and understood, the same cannot be said for the individual decision to become a parent”.

1. Why did Mr. Portela say “parents had less risk of dying from infection than non-parents”?
A.Parents have healthier lifestyles.
B.Parents have less exposure to infection.
C.Parents have higher ability to fight against infections.
D.Parents have less experience to fight against infections.
2. How are parents protected against infections?
A.By being exposed to their kids’ infection.B.By working out with their kids.
C.By refreshing their kids’ life.D.By strengthening their kids’ infection.
3. What can we infer from the research?
A.Rich life benefits parents more than having children.
B.Lack of sleep has nothing to do with life expectancy.
C.The presence of children can improve parents’ health
D.Behavioral factors contribute to higher death rate than having no children.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Parents and Non-parentsB.How to Achieve Longer Life Expectancy?
C.How Is Parents’ Immune Systems Changed?D.Children’s Effect on Parents’ Immune System

8 . No matter how advanced technology gets, it can never be a substitute for good doctors and medical workers. During this year alone, healthcare professionals from all over the world have been putting themselves in a harmful way to treat COVID-19 patients. In times like this it is more important than ever that everyone has access to a doctor. But, according to statistics from the WHO, China has 19.79 medical doctors per 10,000 people (2017), the US has 26.12, and the UK has 27.86.

However, the rise of telemedicine allows doctors to make better use of their time and provides better healthcare access, especially for those in rural areas. Telemedicine is the remote delivery of healthcare services, including online consultations and diagnoses, and remote patient monitoring.

According to the World Economic Forum, “Nearly every other industry adopted widespread use of conference calls, and more recently, used video chats in order to cooperate remotely, while healthcare providers and patients both hesitated to adopt these tools to deliver healthcare.” However, COVID-19 could push them to adopt the new approach. Having one of the best healthcare systems in the world, Switzerland already offers virtual video appointments for private patients, and with cloud computing, this care can go even further.

With patient data being stored in the cloud, medical records can be easily shared and updated by all healthcare providers when required. With the addition of powerful cloud networks, wearable technology, such as bracelets, can monitor a patient’s key signs from their homes, removing the need for hospital care.

Seema, administrator of Medicare and Medicaid Center, told the Wall Street Journal, “The arrival of telehealth has been just completely speeded, and it’s taken this crisis to push us to a new frontier.” Indeed, telemedicine will have a huge effect on medical care, allowing for more personalized treatment of patients after COVID-19 has relieved.

③ Remote patient monitoring.                         ④ Virtual video appointments.
A.①②③B.①③④C.①②③D.②③④
2. What is Seema’s attitude towards the future of telemedicine?
A.Worried.B.Doubtful.C.Optimistic.D.Cautious.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A.The number of medical doctors per 10,000 is relatively small in China.
B.The UK has the largest number of medical doctors in the world.
C.Only Switzerland has the most developed medical system in the world.
D.Conference calls and video chats have been used widely in telemedicine.

9 . Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world. When it comes to cancer, the sooner you know you have it, the better your chances of surviving. A new blood test could change the way doctors and researchers find cancer in patients. Researchers say the test could provide evidence to the early forms of the disease.

Scientists at Swansea University in Wales came up with the idea. Gareth Jenkins is a professor at the university. “ In this blood test we don’t measure the presence of cancer; we measure the presence of mutant red blood cells which are collateral(附属的) damage that occurs---a by-product of the cancer developing.”

The researchers used normal laboratory equipment to perform the test. This equipment looks for changes in the structure of millions of red blood cells. Those mutant cells lack a surface protein that healthy cells normally have. “The main purpose of the test is to look for very rare cells which have picked up a mutation. The number of mutant red blood cells in a healthy person is around 5 or so per million. You have to look at millions of red blood cells to detect those rare events. These numbers increase in cancer patients---they go up to 40 or 50 mutants on average.”

The researchers tested blood from about 300 people, all of whom have cancer of the esophagus(食道). Patients with esophageal cancer have high levels of mutant red blood cells. Jenkins says that at this point he is not sure if other cancers will produce similar results.

The hope is that the new test and other non-invasive methods could one day become part of commonly used medical methods. He says that using a battery, or series, of tests will be the best way to find out if a person has cancer. These new technologies could save millions of lives.

1. According to the test, how do scientists find out if a person has cancer?
A.By calculating the speed of changes in the structure.
B.By observing the surface protein.
C.By looking for changes in the number of mutant red blood cells.
D.By measuring the presence of cancer.

10 . The human body is an amazing and complex machine. We usually recover from illness or injury on our own. But what happens when we need medical treatment? In the past, some people went to see a medical doctor, while other people trusted ancient traditions and chose treatments such as herbal treatment(草药疗法)or acupuncture(针灸). These two types of medicine—one modern and western and the other ancient and Eastern—used to have nothing to do with each other.

In recent years, however, people around the world have begun to recognize and accept both modern and traditional therapies(治疗). This new kind of medicine can be called integrative medicine(综合医疗), because it combines different types of medicine. Some of the principles of this type of medicine include preventing illness by helping people stay healthy, integrating different types of therapies according to the needs of each patient, and considering the health of the whole person rather than concentrating on a particular illness or injury.

One health maintenance organization(HMO) in Madison, Wisconsin, has opened its integrative medicine center. At the center, HMO members are offered a variety of services. Patients who use these integrative medicine services appreciate having an alternative to surgery (手术) or to drugs and their side effects. They also enjoy activities and therapies that make them feel better even if they’re not sick. And from the financial point of view of the HMO, preventing illness whenever possible is much less expensive than a hospital stay.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil, founder of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, integrative medicine combines the best parts of Western medicine with complementary(补充的) therapies such as nutrition. And because both doctor and patients are working to prevent illness, they become partners with the same goal instead of strangers who see each other only when the patient is sick.

1. What does the article mainly talk about?
A.Western medicine.B.Integrative medicine.
C.Traditional therapy.D.Advances in medical technology.
2. What would be an example of integrative medicine?
A.Taking aspirin(阿司匹林) for a headache.
B.Surgery to remove a patient’s cancerous tumor(肿瘤).
C.Using herbal treatments after surgery.
D.Using acupuncture.
3. Which of the following is an advantage of integrative medicine?
A.It makes doctors enjoy more interesting activities.
B.It let the parents have more confidence in it.
C.It helps patients feel healthier even when they’re not sick.
D.It costs more than medical care in hospital.
4. What will the relationship be between the doctor and the patient based on the last paragraph?
A.They have the same goal of treating the patient’s illness.
B.They see each other only if there is problem.
C.They work together so that the patient does not become ill.
D.They are like strangers in order to prevent illness.
