5 . Do you have a sore throat, a running nose and a headache? Do you keep coughing and sneezing? If you do, the chances are that you have a cold or perhaps flu, but which one? Although both colds and flu are caused by viruses, they are very different illnesses.
Colds, which usually last about a week, affect the nose most. They commonly cause a runny nose and sneezing. Sometimes, they cause a headache, a cough and slightly aching muscles.
Flu is a much more serious illness and is caused by different group of viruses. People with flu usually get all the symptoms described above. However, they also get a high fever, a dry cough and much worse aching. Fever is one of the characteristic symptoms of the flu for all ages. The symptoms also last much longer. Sometimes they don’t disappear for at least two weeks.
Flu can be a deadly disease. The elderly, who are weaker and less healthy than most young people, can die from flu. This is one reason why old people are advised to have a flu injection (预防针) before the start of winter when flu is most common. This injection is inexpensive and definitely worth it.
If you have a cold or flu, you must always deal with used tissues(纸巾) carefully. Don’t leave dirty tissues on your desk or on the floor. Someone else has to pick these up and viruses could be passed on. And finally, remember to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze! You don’t want to see the small drop of liquids blown out of your nose and mouth when you sneeze, do you? Disgusting, eh? Now you can understand why it’s a good idea to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze!

Before I heard those three words “you have cancer”, I would say I defined myself as many things, a journalist, a gatherer of information, a truth-seeker, etc. Over the years I had done many interviews with breast cancer experts and I had reported on the statistics. I had heard that a woman today has about a l in 8 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some time during her life. But for me , no one had breast cancer in my family and quite honestly, I thought it wouldn’t happen to me.
Then the day came when it did happen to me. Those three scary words came to me and I felt I was suddenly hit by a train. Immediately, everything that was once in my normal life was instantly washed away. I had cancer. I had no future.
Anyhow, I had to figure out how I was going to tell my family. I was a talker. But, all of a sudden, I had a lump in my throat. Finally, I took courage and let them know it. Luckily, my family were always there for me.
I must say, for me, my cancer journey was a family affair. From my first appointment to every chemo (化疗) session, my husband or grown daughters were by my side. At first I resisted their efforts, feeling uncomfortable that everyone was taking the time out of their lives to come to take care of me but in the end I was grateful that they did. In those early days after diagnosis, there was so much information coming at me and I was in a state of shock. I couldn’t possibly absorb it all.
However, there are those women battling breast cancer on their own . And they need help and encouragement. My hair has grown back, but my journey hasn't ended. I want to provide help and encouragement for these women.
