6 . As leaves fall and temperatures drop, the winter blues are setting in. The winter blues are very common, with many of us experiencing depression and sadness for no reason.     1    :

●Recognize the symptoms. The most common signs are general sadness, a lack of energy, oversleeping and overeating. Other signs include loss of interest in activities you typically enjoy.     2

●Be exposed to the sun. According to mental health experts, the winter blues happen because we get inadequate sunlight in the winter than we do in other seasons.     3    . Getting extra sunlight each day can help brighten your mood and lift your spirits.

●Get some exercise and consume healthy food. A brisk walk or some exercise will make natural “eel good” chemicals called endorphins (内啡肽) flow through your body. Avoid having too much sugar. If you are crazy for sweet food like cookies candy, it may be a sign that you need more protein (like meal, chicken, or fish).

4    . Cut back on your study load if you have too many things to do. Make sure you set-aside some quiet time to yourself. Studies show that most teens need about nine hours of sleep each night. The average high school students, though, get only six or seven hours.

Seek for help.     5    —from work to relationships, you may have a bigger problem than the winter blues. Chances are that you may be suffering Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Turn to an adult you trust and consult a doctor as soon as possible.

A.Find a treatment that works for you
B.Strike a balance between study and rest
C.Here are steps to relieve the winter blues
D.Sunlight shortage adds to depressed feelings
E.Worse still you may get tired easily most of the day
F.If your winter blues start affecting all aspects of your life

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了治疗阿尔兹海默病的药物——安理申。

7 . If a person forgets names, places or facts — and has trouble with everyday things like reading or shopping — it may not mean you are getting old. It could be Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默病) disease. So it’s important to see a doctor as soon as you can.

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s. But a medicine called ARICEPT (安理申) has been used by millions of people to help their symptoms (症状).

Ask your doctor if ARICEPT is right for you or your loved one. It is the Number One medicine for Alzheimer’s in the world. The sooner you know it’s Alzheimer’s, the better ARICEPT can help.

ARICEPT is good for many but may not be good for everyone. Some people may experience not sleeping well, feeling very tired, or not wanting to eat. In this case you should tell your doctors because your condition may get worse.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍了引起偏头痛的可能原因以及缓解偏头痛的一些食物,但是食物对偏头痛的影响因人而异。

8 . Migraine is a disease that has a number of symptoms, including head pain that can stick around from four hours to several days. While migraines can occur partly because of genetic factors, attacks may happen by chance, set off by a cause in the environment.

One common cause is food, and some common dietary causes include alcohol, salt, sugar, chocolate, and caffeine. But there are many others, and scientists continue to identify more. For instance, a Brazilian study found that watermelons brought on a headache within minutes in about 30 percent of the participants.

Some of the newest research is looking at which foods and what kinds of diets can prevent or lessen migraines. A new study published last year by a team of researchers found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people ease their headaches. In the study, those on a diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish had a 30 to 40 percent reduction in total headache hours per day, serious headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group.

Tanya Kamka had suffered weekly migraines for most of her life. Then, in her 50s, she joined the NIH diet trial and increased her intake of fish. After only a few months, “I haven’t had a migraine, not even a mild one, in over two years,” she says.

For others, the solution comes from plants, not fish. A 60-year-old man joined a study on the food-migraine link and turned to a diet, which includes a lot of dark, leafy greens. After two months he was experiencing only one migraine a month instead of the 18 to 24 a month he’d suffered before.

Clearly, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. What works for one person may not work for another.

1. What can be learned from paragraph 1?
A.Environment can cause migraine.B.The main cause of migraine is genes.
C.Heavy headache can lead to migraine.D.Migraine lasts for at most four hours.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The length of migraine.B.Factors that lead to migraine.
C.The most common cause of migraine.D.A Brazilian study about the cause of migraine.
3. What did the new study last year find?
A.Taking more fish oils can help lessen migraines.
B.People taking more vegetables can reduce migraines.
C.More fish oils and less vegetables can cure migraines.
D.The control group may have 30%-40% less migraines.
4. Why does the author mention Tanya and the 60-year-old man?
A.To prove that different foods can help with migraines.
B.To tell that both fish and plants have good effects on migraines.
C.To suggest that fish oils work better than plant oils on reducing migraines.
D.To show that the influences of food on migraines vary from person to person.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了作者患上脸盲症后的感受以及脸盲症的基本情况。

9 . Recently, while out walking my dog Jack, I encountered a blond woman walking her dog. I stopped to chat and she responded amiably. As soon as we had ended our chat and I was walking on, I realized that the woman I had approached was a complete stranger, not one of my neighbors.

Face blindness, is a neurological condition resulting in trouble identifying human faces. Neurologist-author Oliver Sacks famously introduced this condition in his 1985 book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Sacks wrote about his own severe face blindness in a wonderful article in the NewYorker. Up to 2.5 percent of people are born with face blindness.

Acquired face blindness may be caused by head trauma, strokes or tumors. Face blindness occurs in many people like me with Alzheimer’s disease, even in the early stages. Although my cognitive impairment is still mild, I have been having increasing trouble recognizing faces, even of people I know well. Many of my neighbors are hard for me to recognize until I hear their voices or see the dog they are walking.

The ability to accurately identify other people by recognizing their faces is important to our social, emotional and cultural behaviors. Our brains appear to learn how to recognize the faces of other people of our race during childhood. A study in 2019 showed that there is a critical period for this learning. Children learn how to recognize faces of the group they are raised with,up until about age 12. White children will become adept at distinguishing white face. Similarly, an Asian child raised in an Asian country without exposure to white faces will not be able to distinguish white faces. This learning process slows down and then is gone by age 12.

My best option may be to pay closer attention to the dogs. Even for me, pets are easy to identify because of shape, size, color of coat and sometimes behavior. Next time we pass on the street, we’ll be strangers no more.

1. Which word best describes the author’s experience with a complete stranger?
A.Awkward.B.Casual.C.Friendly.D.Indifferent.
2. What does the underlined phrase “my cognitive impairment” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Head trauma.B.Strokes.C.Tumors.D.Alzheimer’s disease.
3. According to the author, who would probably recognize white faces easy?
A.An Asian child raised in an Asian country.B.An American child raised in America.
C.An American child raised an Asian country.D.An American adult lived in an Asian country.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What it’s like to have face blindnessB.How we would avoid face blindness
C.Why the elderly choose to keep petsD.What causes the society stranger
