2 . People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental health and are less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat savoury (咸味的) snacks such as crisps (薯片), which are low in nutrients (营养) , are more likely to report greater levels of anxiety.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and their psychological(心理的) health. The research found that both nutrient-rich fruit and nutrient-poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental health, independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these everyday memory lapses (差错) and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique relationship between these nutrient-poor savoury snacks, everyday mental lapses, and psychological health.
Lead author, PhD student Nicola-Jayne Tuck commented, “Very little is known about how diet may affect mental health, and while we did not directly examine causality here, our findings could suggest that frequently snacking on nutrient-poor savoury foods may increase everyday mental loss, which in turn reduces psychological health.”
“It is possible that changing what we snack on could be a really simple way to improve our mental health. It is also possible that the future limit of processed (特殊处理的) snacks at checkouts, could not only improve the country’s physical health, but mental health too.”
“Overall, it’s definitely worth trying to get into the habit of reaching for the fruit bowl.”

3 . Scientists at the University of Birmingham in the U.K. found that increased consumption of flavonols (黄酮醇类) allowed its male participants to more efficiently complete cognitive tasks. Flavonols are molecules naturally found in fruit, vegetables and cocoa (可可粉).
Researchers giving a cocoa drink to a select group of participants and a non-cocoa drink to another for a study found flavonol produced a faster and greater increase in blood oxygenation (氧化) levels. The study consisting of 18 healthy male participants aged between 18 and 40 led to the discovery that participants who drank the cocoa completed cognitive (认知的) tasks some 11% faster than the other group.
In the news released by the university, the study’s author Dr. Catarina Rendeiro said: “It is the first time the cognitive effects of flavonols in young, healthy subjects and the link with brain blood oxygenation have been investigated.”
“Our results showed a clear benefit for the participants taking the flavanol-enriched drink, but only when the task became sufficiently complicated,” she explained. “We can link this with our results on improved blood oxygenation. If you’re being challenged more, your brain needs improved blood oxygen levels to manage that challenge. It also further suggests that flavonols might be particularly beneficial during cognitively demanding tasks.”
“By better understanding the cognitive benefits of eating these food groups, as well as the wider cardiovascular benefits, we can offer improved guidance to people about how to make the most of their dietary choices,” the doctor added.
The study, published in Scientific Reports, was funded by a Birmingham-Illinois Bridge Seed Grant, and by the National Institute of Aging in the U.S.
Also worthy of note is that some participants of the study saw no benefit from consuming the flavanol-enriched drink. It’s believed that they likely already had high blood oxygenation levels.

5 . It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It is then that you may want to eat something sweet, perhaps a sweet drink or a chocolate bar to lift your mood.
But a study suggests that sugar can make you feel worse rather than lift your mood. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1,300 adults.
According to researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short “feel good” period. However, as they begin to digest the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling.
So the next time you feel tired and can’t concentrate on study and work, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. There are still other ways to relieve tiredness.
A.Maybe a little exercise at midday is a better idea. |
B.So cutting sweet food out of the diet is a good choice. |

8 . Apples have always played a significant yet diverse role in history. Today apples continue to astonish in medicine, with headlines reporting that an apple a day really does have health benefits. In 2013, researchers in Oxford suggested that prescribing (开处方) either an apple a day or a statin (a drug used to lower cholesterol) seemed to be equally successful at preventing heart attacks and strokes in people over the age of 50.
EPIC study, one of the biggest studies of its kind, involves half a million people and looks at the effects of eating fruit and vegetables on disease. Participants consuming at least eight portions a day had an astonishing 22% lower risk of heart discase, and risks of some cancers were slightly reduced. However, other cancers were unaffected, and there was no real effect on diabetes.
How might the humble apple be declaring war on heart disease and cancer, two of our biggest killers? The answer might lie in polyphenols (多酚) in apples, which is useful for protecting the fruit from disease and also giving it color and flavor. They are known to have strong antioxidant (抗氧化剂), and may also protect by reducing blood stickiness and cholesterol levels.
Several studies also show a reduction in blood pressure when more fruit and vegetables are eaten. Furthermore, apples contain a fibre called pectin (果胶) which sticks to cholesterol and glucose in the gut (肠道), slowing their absorption. What is clear is that the apple is a complex mix of components, working together for the good of our health. Trying to make do with antioxidant vitamin tablets just isn’t good enough, as shown by scientists in the Heart Protection Study.
But can we cat enough apples a day to keep the doctor away? Eating too many may not be a good idea, especially with a risk of lasting exposure lo low levels of pesticide. Some people are even allergic to apples, and they can wear away outer layer of tooth. The Department of Health’s advice to consume ‘5-a-day’ (including both fruit and vegetables) might be a realistic starting point.

9 . Over the past ten months of pandemic life, cooking has become a shelter for me. New York Times food editor Sam Sifton referred to Korean fried rice and said it "improves moods, atmospheres and weeks alike".
Cooking food for yourself is beneficial to your physical health. When you cook your own food, you control exactly what goes into your body. It's the best possible way to “dial in” or clean up your diet.
In terms of improving cooking skill, you can't help but improve if you do it over and over again. With so many other outlets for hobbies shut down right now, why not view your kitchen as a mini universe to be explored? You've got the tools, not to mention the human requirement to eat. I can't think of another hobby where your body physically requires you to practice several times daily.
How does cooking relieve stress, you might be wondering?
A.Cooking helps kids develop many hobbies. |
B.Actually, cooking can bring more benefits. |
C.The act itself can be calming to some people. |
D.From a financial aspect, cooking cannot be beaten. |
E.You can save money as well as improve your mental health. |
F.If improving health is your main reason for cooking, you're not alone. |
G.You're likely to improve your cooking skills and they will stick with you for life. |
10 . A strong coffee after a poor night's sleep is the kick-start many people need in the morning but new research suggests that it might be best to have a bite to eat first.
A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood sugar control - a risk factor for diabetes (糖尿病)and heart disease.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee --- subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee,“ said Professor James Betts, at the University of Bath in the UK.
For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them.
In one, the participants had a normal night's sleep, roughly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then experienced an interrupted night's sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond — and upon waking were given the same sugary drink.
On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar and insulin (胰 岛素)responses when compared to the normal night's sleep-- although previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep could have a negative effect. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast actually increased the blood sugar response by around 50% — suggesting that relying on coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body's ability to tolerate the sugar in your breakfast.
