文章大意:本文是说明文。主要介绍了三种锻炼人们的肺活量,让人们在运动后呼吸更轻松的方式。同时,作者还提醒人们要坚持,不管选择哪种方式,都要持之以恒才能看到效果。

1 . Three Exercises to Make Breathing Easier

If you lack lung power and feel a little exhausted even after a short jogging, the following exercises can be of great help.

Use Your Diaphragm (横膈膜)

Your diaphragm is the muscle that controls breathing, and because it is located right above your stomach, you can strengthen them together. Lie on your back with your knees bent, keeping one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Breathe in deeply, slowly pulling the air into your lungs. Breathe out through your mouth. Try to wait seven seconds before taking in air again.

Imagine You Are Rowing a Boat

This exercise strengthens the upper back muscles and opens your chest cavity (腔), allowing for full lung ability. Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you and knees slightly bent. Put a resistance band around the bottoms of your feet and hold it in front of you in an X shape. Holding an end in each hand, spread your arms, then pull backward until your hands meet your chest. Repeat at least six times three days a week.

Walk for 20 Minutes

Walking doesn’t just get your heart pumping or work your leg muscles—it also builds up the area around your lungs to help them function better. To get the most out of your walk, stand straight, with your head up and your shoulders back, and keep a heel-to-toe pace, allowing your lungs to fully expand. Combine walking with deep breathing to increase your air intake. Work up to walking three or four days a week.

No matter which exercise you pick up, keep this in mind: Chances are that it will take you several months to see the outcome. So keep it up!

1. What should you obey if you are strengthening your diaphragm?
A.You should lie on your stomach with your knees bent.
B.You should hold your breath before breathing in again.
C.You should do it seven times a week to get a best result.
D.You should do it by breathing in merely with your mouth.
2. How can you take in more air?
A.By keeping on rowing a boat regularly.B.By opening your chest cavity more often.
C.By integrating walking with deep breathing.D.By allowing your lungs to expand to the fullest.
3. What do the three exercises have in common?
A.They all need some extra assistance.B.They all involve using your both feet.
C.They all require you to stand straight.D.They all call for constantly practicing.

2 . A study led by The University of Edinburgh researchers found that the performance of runners who listened to self-selected music as they ran after completing a demanding (费力的) thinking task was at the same level as when they were not mentally tired. The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Human Sport and Exercise.

Researchers used two tests to study how listening to music affected the running performance of fitness enthusiasts. One test looked at the effects on the interval running ability — alternating between high intensity (强度) running and lower intensity jogging — with a group of nine exercisers, and the other on a 5 km time trial with a group of nine trained runners. The groups completed a 30-minute computer-based cognitive (认知的) test which put them in a mentally worn state before completing high intensity exercise. They were tested with and without motivational music which they selected.

Taking into account the results of a baseline test taken by participants that they did without completing a mentally demanding test beforehand and without music, the researchers found the interval running ability of the mentally worn fitness enthusiasts was slightly greater with music compared to that without music, and was the same as when the participants were not mentally tired. The 5 km time trial performance also showed small improvements with self-selected music compared to no music.

Dr. Shaun Phillips, of The University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport, said, “Feeling tired mentally is a common occurrence for many of us, and can negatively affect many of our daily activities, including exercise. Finding safe and effective ways to reduce this negative impact is therefore useful. The research showing that listening to self-selected motivational music can help active people improve their endurance running ability and performance when mentally worn out may provide a useful strategy.”

1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study?
A.Its purpose.B.Its principle.C.Its process.D.Its participants.
2. Why did the researchers consider the baseline test?
A.To prove that their finding is useful.B.To offer evidence to support their study.
C.To make a comparison with their test results.D.To find links between music and mental health.
3. What is Dr. Shaun Phillips’ attitude towards the research?
A.Approving.B.Doubtful.C.Critical.D.Carefree.
4. Which of the following can serve as the best title?
A.Being Mentally Tired Is a Common Feeling
B.Listening to Music Benefits Mental Health
C.Exercise Regularly Improves Mental Condition
D.Running to Music Reduces Mental Tiredness

3 . Canyoning

The sports of canyoning (蹦谷) explore the high-energy environment where water meets rock on the coast. Protected by wetsuits and helmets, people jump from cliffs and waterfalls and discover caves that would not normally be arrived at.

It was first done in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people jump from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs £50 (£30 for children under 16).

The British Sub Aqua Club (0870 112 9133, www.bsac.com) and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (01580 819688, www.padi.com) run courses teaching the important skills.

4 .

Paragliding is a kind of flying, but instead of the wing being made of metal, wood or plastic, it is made of nylon or polyester. The wing is attached to a harness by lines where a pilot sits, similar to a parachute.

Is it safe?

Paragliding, is as safe as sailing and deep-sea diving. The big advantage is that it’s probably the slowest form of aviation, so if you do crash, you'll hit the ground quite gently! It’s a very relaxing sport as you're mostly sitting down. Yet, you’ll probably experience pain in some muscles you didn’t know you had while learning, but many of those will be due to the walk up the training hill to launch.

Where do I learn?

There are lots of schools, mainly based inland by appropriate hills or mountains, and there are also schools on the coast near spectacular cliffs. These are very attractive, though the prospect of landing in the sea seems to discourage beginners! It takes seven days to get your basic license; then you’re free to fly independently at sites across the country.

What do I need?

Pilots normally wear warm clothes in case they get very high up, and a helmet in case they stumble on landing. In terms of gear, schools supply basic training, canopies, harnesses, etc. However, you'll probably want to buy your own more sophisticated equipment, which you’ll be able to choose much better once you’ve tried some out on your course.

Who can do it?

There’s no upper age limit provided your instructor judges you capable, but the youngest is 14. Anybody with good eyesight and good balance is a potential paraglider pilot.

Flying a paraglider is a great sport. We hope to see you in the air with us this season!

1. Which would be the best heading for Paragraph 1?
A.What is paragliding?B.Who invented paragliding?
C.How is paragliding special?D.Why is paragliding popular?
2. According to the passage, paragliding is____________ .
A.exciting but tiringB.safe and relaxing
C.attractive but expensiveD.fast and challenging
3. What can we know from the passage?
A.Fit people of any age can take up paragliding.
B.Most paragliding schools are situated by the sea.
C.Pilots need to buy basic equipment on their training course.
D.Learners can fly on their own after at least a week’s training.

9 . Whether you are racing or touring, long-distance cycling can be very rewarding.     1     In general, it is more important to prepare your mind and your gear (齿轮) for the challenge ahead than it is to train your body. The best way to physically train for a long cycling trip is to take a long cycling trip! There are several steps for you.

Stretch first! Warm up for at least ten minutes before each long-distance cycling session.     2     This way, you can reduce the risk of injury.

Pace yourself.     3     Try to keep up this pace as best you can. Use a lower gear so that you don't wear yourself out. Try to keep up a rate of roughly 90 rpm(revolutions[旋转]per minute) on a low gear to go easy on your muscles and lungs.

Shift gears. When you come to a hill, change into a lower gear so that you can more easily reach the top.     4     Throughout the ride, stay aware of how hard you are working. If you are struggling to push the pedals (踏板), you should switch into a lower gear to conserve your energy.

5     Even if you feel strong, stop every 10-20 miles to give your body a rest and ensure that everything is running smoothly. Rehydrate (补水) by drinking some water, and boost your energy levels with a quick snack. Keep doing so until you arrive at your destination.

A.Take regular breaks.
B.You are sure to face some challenges during your cycling.
C.You should make better use of gears.
D.Try some exercises like jumping and jogging in place.
E.When going down, you should change to a higher gear.
F.It trains your body and provides a chance to appreciate the beauty along the road.
G.Start cycling at a speed which suits you.
