文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了久坐的危害。

1 . Nowadays, are you sitting more and more? Take a moment to think about your sitting habits. You’re probably sitting while reading this.     1    Besides, many people still lie on the sofa swiping their phones instead of doing exercise after work. That’s undoubtedly a lot of sitting. The fact is that the amount of time spent sitting has increased over time.     2

People know sitting too much is unsuitable, and most of us naturally feel a little guilty after a long-time TV watching. But what problems gradually exist when we seat ourselves for nearly eight hours per day? A study on nearly 8000 adults suggests that there’s a direct relationship between the time spent sitting and our risk of early death from any cause.     3

“Sit less, move more” is what the Heart Foundation encourages us to do.     4    It is like telling people to just “exercise” without telling them how. Exercise guidelines are always more practical. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults do exercise for two hours and 30 minutes every week, plus muscle strengthening exercise two or more days a week. We need similar guidelines for sitting.

5    One of them is from Diaz’s research team. “It would probably be like this: for every 30 continuous minutes of siting, stand up and move or walk for five minutes at a quick pace,” Diaz, the lead researcher, said, adding that the study has put us a step closer to the satisfying guidelines. But more researches are needed to confirm their approaches.

A.Now it’s time to get up and move around.
B.It is quite usual for you to remain seated in a business meeting.
C.As the total sitting time increases, so does the danger of early death.
D.But the function of this rule is just too simple and abstract to benefit us a lot.
E.The experts suggest that more exercise should be done to reduce sitting time.
F.It is reported that many people have spent more than 6 hours sitting or lying.
G.Various specific and detailed guidelines have been made to inspire people to reduce sitting time.

2 . Benefits of sport

Every sport has its own specific health benefits. Swimming, for example, is an excellent physical activity as nearly all muscles are used when you swim. As a result, it provides a terrific full-body workout, improving coordination, flexibility, balance and muscle strength.     1

Sport, as well as being a physical activity, has a mental aspect too. It can help define who you are and who you can become. Sport builds character and promotes the development of a number of qualities that are essential for a successful and fulfilling life.     2

Sport requires self-discipline, without which there will always be the temptation to simply give up. In order to excel in sport, you will have to set goals, make plans and persevere with thoughts and actions, even without immediate rewards.

3     Everyone has their ups and downs, their triumphs and their tragedies and, therefore, a big part of life means having to deal with success and failure. Engaging in competitive sport will help you understand that winning a competition does not make you superior to everyone else and that losing is only a temporary setback, from which you can learn and progress.

Sport will help you understand the importance of teamwork. It will show you that you often need to rely on others for your success.     4

The world of sport is a fairground of exciting opportunities where you can discover who you really are.     5

A.Time, I think, to lace up your sports shoes and go play.
B.Included here are three qualities worthy of special consideration.
C.Of course, swimming is also a great way to cool down on a hot day.
D.Regular exercise will also help you maintain a healthy body weight.
E.Sport will encourage you to maintain a positive and balanced outlook.
F.Similarly, you also have a responsibility to contribute to the success of others.
G.Another benefit of exercise is that it will improve your body’s immune system.

3 . Memo

To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2022

A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo for your reference when you answer the phones.

Sports 1:Basketball.

We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Sports 2:Gym

We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. Frist, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics, all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.

Sports 3:Hiking

Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Sports 4: Swimming

The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Students selecting basketball had better register early.
B.Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.
C.Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.
D.Students having swimming suits can take up swimming.
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Students taking part in basketball will walk to the courts.
B.Every student can gain admission to one of the four sports.
C.Hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees.
D.Students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water.
3. What is the purpose of the memo?
A.To attract students’ interest in the programme.
B.To require the parents to select a sport for their child.
C.To help the staff explain the programme to the parents.
D.To remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on time.

4 . READING AND WRITING

A Teen Case Study

Mrs Zhang, our school counsellor who is also a medical doctor, is passionate about the advantages of playing sport. She believes that it is vital for teenagers to have a positive attitude, and sports help them do this. She gave us the following example as inspiration.

I had a teenage patient, who was depressed and moody. Let’s call her Shan. Conventional wisdom said that I should prescribe medication of some sort. I decided rather to ask about her lifestyle. From her responses it was clear she was getting no exercise. So l encouraged her to choose a school sporting activity and take part in it. I suggested that she keep a journal of all her new activities, and how she felt about them and about herself.

Shan took my recommendation and joined the school volleyball team. Six months later she was hardly recognisable: she had lost weight and was looking fit and healthy; she had more friends; her schoolwork had improved, and best of all, she was no longer depressed or moody. Her mum told me she was a changed person. Shan told me later that I had changed her life. I hadn’t really. It was Shan herself who did it. She took the idea I gave her and embraced it with enjoyment and determination.

Read the report. Answer the questions.

1. What was Shan’s problem?

2. Why didn’t Mrs Zhang prescribe medication for Shan? What did she decide rather to do?

5 . The most popular martial arts1 today originated in Asia, especially in China. Some Chinese fighting styles were invented more than 3,000 years ago. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for self-defence.

Martial arts are often referred to as either soft or hard. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent’s force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent’s own force to defend yourself. Soft styles use fluid movements and timing to avoid, deflect and redirect their opponent’s attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force. Techniques involve blocking, posturing and powerful punching2 and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you are more skilful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.

Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 14th century, a community of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities—one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started leaning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours.

In fact, Chinese influence in martial arts was not limited to kung fu. The very first Korean military training manual3 was based on a Chinese version, During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of troops4. They adopted a training methodology5 from a Chinese military manual called Ji Xiao Xin Shu6, written by the famed Chinese general, Qi Jiguang, who had himself defeated Japanese pirates7.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。Martin写信给Jeremy,告知了跑步的一些好处。
6 .
Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your question. As people often say, any exercise is better than none, but long-distance running in particular has a lot of benefits.

It is a great sport for beginners — you do not need a gym membership or any special equipment. Just a pair of good running shoes will do. Then, keep it up. There is also no better way to know yourself and to see what you are capable of.

You are also somebody who worries about getting sick. Running will help you get fit and prevent diseases. It will give you good upper and lower body strength. Like any exercise, running increases the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain. It makes your heart stronger and allows more blood to flow around your body. It also strengthens your immune system and reduces the risk of serious health problems, as well as more common illnesses like colds. Besides, anybody who is feeling down can go for a run to cheer themselves up. Even a thirty-minute run will provide relief from aches or tension that you may be suffering due to stress.

If you are new to running, here is some advice for you — it is important to warm up and cool down properly before and after running, so you do not hurt yourself. A warm-up gets your blood flowing and prepares your body before you exercise. After a long run, you should jog slowly for ten minutes, then walk for five minutes. Such kind of warm-down relaxes your body after exercise.

Best Regards,

Dr. Martin

7 . Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has suggested that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.

The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a mistake in themselves.

Coaches and parents should also be careful that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters’ performances. Positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

1. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.Mental stress should be reduced.B.Sport should be made less competitive.
C.Stress should be made less.D.Sport can be mentally challenging.
2. According to the passage, young people like sport because ________ .
A.it can help them learn more about society
B.it enables them to criticize themselves
C.it can provide them with valuable experiences
D.it teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Parents and coaches should enable children to enjoy sport.
B.Parents and coaches should help children to win every game.
C.Parents and coaches should train children to deal with stress.
D.Parents and coaches should understand the meaning of sport.
4. What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To teach young athletes how to avoid burnout.
B.To persuade young children not to worry about criticism.
C.To stress the importance of encouraging children.
D.To discuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement.

As an ambassador (大使) for The Daily Mile, a movement that calls for one simple thing—15 minutes of daily exercise, where children run, walk, jog or skip one mile—he encourages any form of exercise and movement.

Geoghegan Hart sees schools as key to setting young people up for life with good sporting habits. “When you’re school age, sport can encourage you and take hold of you and change you more than at any other age,” he explains. “Yes, we all go on journeys with sport, but when you look back at those journeys, they start with your childhood.”

9 . Here we’ve got three tips to help you start an exercise habit that can stick. It’s a lot easier than you think.

    1

You don’t have to be a marathoner to get meaningful health benefits from exercise. Experts say even daily activities, which include mopping the floor, organizing a room or carrying groceries up the stairs can reduce the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.

So remind yourself that it’s not a choice between hours-long workout or nothing at all. Instead, think of starting an exercise routine like standing up from your chair and sitting back down repeatedly.     2

Focus on how exercise makes you feel great

There are so many positives that happen when you move. It improves all the tasks that demand focus and creativity. It helps you generate energy. It boosts mood.     3    . When you feel better, you will bring more enthusiasm and energy to your work and the people working around you.

Forget long- term benefits like weight loss or better overall health.     4    . Actually, they’re not super motivational in real-time and can be disheartening when you don’t see results quickly.

Figure out what kind of exercise and workout location makes you feel good

If weightlifting in a crowded gym gives you anxiety, try to get a set of weights for home or follow workout videos on YouTube or ride a bike in the park.     5    .

A.Start small and every movement counts
B.They often take much longer time to achieve
C.Focus on immediate payoffs like improved mood and energy
D.In short, any movement helps to clear fat and sugar out of blood
E.Remember, when you have more energy, you’re a happier person
F.Keep trying until you find a workout routine that makes you happy
G.No matter how modest those goals are, they create this feeling like I can do more

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了运动不仅可以让人保持健康,还可以提高人们的脑力。

10 . If you thought running was just great for the body, then think again. Scientists have found that the sport not only keeps people fit but also improves your brain power (脑力).

The research found that people who keep fit are more likely to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive skills. The findings add to a growing body of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing (老化) and also helping it replace dying cells (死细胞). This might reduce the risk of many illnesses and diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59 — 69 on a treadmill (跑步机). Their heart and lung capacity was measured and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains. Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged between 60 — 77. As they went through a three-month fitness program, they saw improvements in their memory.

Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results. Mice, examined at the National Institute on Ageing, in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain used for memory, were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.

Linda Clare, professor of clinical psychology of ageing and dementia at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain Health told The Sunday Times: “Moderate intensity aerobic (有氧的) activity such as walking, cycling or running can produce changes in brain structure and function.”

1. Who tend to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking?
A.People who are healthy.B.People who are thin.
C.People who are unhealthy.D.People who are fat.
2. What do we learn from the experiment in paragraph 3?
A.Those who were less fit had larger brains.
B.Those who were fitter had smaller brains.
C.Exercise helps people improve their memory.
D.Old people doing exercise improve memory better than young people.
3. Accord to Linda Clare, what kind of activity can NOT produce changes in brain structure and function?
A.Walking.B.Singing.
C.Cycling.D.Running.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To tell you sport improves your brain power.
B.To introduce some good ways to keep healthy.
C.To teach you how to best spend time in doing sports.
D.To introduce several ways to improve your memory.
