1 . As the parent of two teenagers who have played multiple sports over the years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely cruel.
However, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports, I find that playing sports can help kids become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose and when they win. Whether kids play soccer, baseball, or football, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another.
When my son plays baseball, he’s not the only one who needs to play well; he depends on his defense to make the plays on the field. When my daughter plays tennis, she depends on her partner to cut off the ball at the net and win the point, and the tennis team depends on each person in order to win the overall match and become the champion. Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.
Sadly, though, youth sports have suffered from the “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” attitude. They have become too much of a reflection of professional sports. Winning is a happy result, but the lessons from losing are even more important. When my daughter loses the tennis match, her coach reminds her that she shouldn’t lose heart and that she should learn more from losing than from winning. Losing makes you focus on improving your skills and your strategy. We’re going to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.
I believe that participating in youth sports is much more than building a sound body. Sports are the best way to shape and build more self-motivated and happier children and help them become more self-motivated and happier adults.

4 . Benefits of Sports
Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from studies and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven beneficial to overall well-being.
The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you’re involved.
Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership.
Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics.
There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!
A.It’s not just your body that benefits from sports. |
B.Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit. |

E.Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills. |
F.Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage. |
G.Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field. |
5 . Why Is Exercise Important to Teenagers and How to Get Started?
Teens get involved in a lot of things in high school. Some are involved in clubs and others are part of the band. There are many reasons why sports are great for teens and here’s how they can get started.
One of the biggest benefits for teens to be involved in sports is that it keeps them active. Some teens would be content to play video games or watch television all the time they’re at home. If a teen spends all their waking time being inactive they could gain weight and become unhealthy.
Be sure your child knows to warm up properly before playing any sport. Warming up before any physical activity will help your child avoid injury.
Encourage your teens to try out for one high school sport. Perhaps they’re not comfortable with football, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t excel in swimming or tennis. They may also enjoy playing baseball or soccer. Girls may enjoy basketball, swimming.
Many sports team will require that students try out before being able to join. Try-outs may include showing how active your teen is, running, jumping or if they are quick enough. They want to ensure your teen has at least the minimum skills required for the sport they’re trying out for.
Being a part of a sports team can also help your teen make friends.
A.Athletes almost become like a second family. |
B.This is a good practice whether they’re practicing with the team or exercising on their own. |
C.Do everything you can to encourage your teen. |
D.Being a part of a sports team will help them burn calories so they will remain healthier. |
E.Your teens may not feel that they’re good enough to make their high school sports team. |
F.High school coaches are going to do their best to keep their team members healthy. |
6 . Have you tried to run or walk for exercise and then given up? If you answered yes, you should try a new kind of exercise: aquatic (水中的) exercise. Aquatic exercise is like exercise on land, but you do it in a swimming pool. More and more people are trying aquatic exercise now.
Aquatic exercise feels easier than exercising on land. Why? You weigh about 90% less in the pool. It is better for your knees than running or walking. Water is about 1,000 times thicker and heavier than air. To move through the water, your body has to work four times as hard. As a result, you can burn more calories (卡路里).
In fact, most people say they feel more relaxed in the water. They stop thinking about the things that make them worried. They feel in control of their bodies. The cool, quiet environment makes them feel good.
But what if you are afraid of the water? No problem! There is nothing to worry about. Aquatic exercise is safe and easy to learn. It doesn’t require any special skills. You don’t even need to know how to swim. Aquatic exercise is for everyone.

Dear Brett,
Thanks for your email. You do lots of sports at school in Canada. I’d love to play ice hockey one day.
We do lots of sports at our school too. We’ve got a swimming pool and our class go swimming every Wednesday. We also play tennis, volleyball and football, but football in Australia is different from soccer. We can touch the ball with our hands!
There are lots of after-school sports clubs in Australia too. I go to a surfing club after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We go to the beach and learn how to surf. It’s great fun!
Can you surf in your country? Looking forward to your reply.
Rob

8 . We all know that exercise is good for your health, but some kinds of exercise may be better than others.
Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer. Researchers say it is not important how far you run. It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run. As advertisements for the running shoes Nike say, “Just do it.”
Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults.About one fourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were considerably less likely than non-runners to die of any form of disease, including heart disease. In fact, the runners usually lived three years longer than the non-runners.
This study lasted 15 years. During that time, more than 3,400 of the individuals died. About 1,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease, a heart attack or stroke. Compared to non-runners, runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes. Also, runners compared to non-runners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
The runners in the study ran between 10 and 16 kilometers per hour. Slower runners, and those who only ran once or twice a week, were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further. Researchers looked at the running over time and found that persistent runners (over six years) showed the biggest benefits.
To stay healthy, doctors suggest that adults up to age 65 do 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) exercise every week. They say these individuals need 75 minutes of energetic exercise, like running, every week for good health.

9 . What an athlete eats before, during and after exercise is important for comfort and performance during exercise. While eating soon before exercise doesn’t provide what is needed for the activity, it can prevent hunger during exercise. What is needed for muscles is stored in the days before exercise. This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is very important to recovery and being ready for the next exercise.
Exercising on a full stomach is not a good idea. Food that remains in your stomach during an event may cause stomach upset. To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event.
If you have an early morning race or exercise, it’s best to get up early enough to eat your pre-exercise meal. If not, you should try to eat or drink something easily digestible about 20-30 minutes before the event. The closer you are to the time of your event, the less you should eat. You can have a liquid (液体) meal closer to your event than a solid (固体) meal because your stomach digests liquids faster.
Because glucose (葡萄糖) is the energy source for most exercise, a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and easy to digest. This includes foods such as fruit, bread, energy bars and drinks.
Planning is necessary if you are competing in an all-day event, such as track meets or other tournaments. You should plan ahead and prepare meals and snacks that you have tried before. Do not experiment with something new on the event day.
1. To prepare for the next exercise, you should ________.A.eat soon before exercise |
B.eat during exercise |
C.eat after exercise |
D.eat nothing at all |
A.cause stomach upset |
B.give enough energy and stomach discomfort |
C.give comfort and good performance during exercise |
D.lead to hunger during exercise |
A.You’d better have your pre-exercise meal after an early morning race. |
B.Fruit and bread are high in glucose and easy to digest. |
C.Planning is not necessary for track meets. |
D.You can try something new for your meals on the event day. |
10 . Think energetic exercise is just for the young? Think again. Contrary to the common belief, a new study finds seniors should stay physically active. The study reveals that physical activity shifts energy away from biological processes that cause disease and moves it towards systems throughout the body which extend (延长) life.
Researchers used apes (类人猿) — the distant cousins of humans —in their research. They theorize that humans separated themselves from apes during evolution (进化) by developing the ability to make themselves fitter through physical exercise.
Typically, apes live only 35 to 40 years. However, apes are also much less active than most humans. This suggests that humans reached a point in their evolution where people developed a way to stay alive longer through more activity. The behavior of apes stands in sharp contrast to that of ancient hunter-gatherers, who the team says averaged around 135 minutes of moderate-to-energetic physical activity a day. Study authors believe this level of activity, up to 10 times more than the average American, is the reason hunter-gatherers lived to around 70 years old.
The team finds humans also use energy from physical activity to repair and maintain the body. Along with burning calories, exercise actually causes widespread damage to the body by causing damage on a cellular(细胞的), molecular (分子的), and tissue level. However, this damage is essential so the body can build itself back even stronger. Through exercise, the body starts repairing muscle fibers, broken bones, and other minor injuries. When people are less active, these processes are also less active, putting people at higher risk of disease.
We humans evolved to be active throughout our lives and our bodies need physical activity to age well. In the past, daily physical activity was necessary in order to survive, but today we choose to do voluntary physical activity for health and fitness. The good news is that you don’t need to be as active as a hunter-gatherer to reduce the effects of aging.
