6 . When a staging of the famous Chinese opera “Farewell My Concubine” performed by the Shanghai Peking Opera Company (SPOC) sold out at Princeton University, Jianping Mei, a 1990 graduate, had a big idea. He wondered if there were enough Princeton students interested in studying Peking Opera in Shanghai.
Mei decided the most important requirement to join the pilot project would be a strong will to study traditional Chinese opera in Chinese, since all instruction would be in the Chinese language. He expected five students would be enough, but to his surprise, 19 students took up this challenge.
The program, which lasted about twenty days, was held in the studios of the Shanghai Peking Opera Company. Students’ daily study started with three hours of morning training in basic skills. Half of the group learned martial arts (武术), and half practiced water sleeves (水袖) dancing.
During the first week of training, afternoon periods focused on the important parts of Peking Opera performance: the music, characters, costumes (服装) and makeup. Over the following two weeks, the afternoon periods became scene study workshops, in which groups of two to five students worked together with teachers to prepare for the performance of an aria (唱腔), scene or dance from traditional Peking Opera.
After two weeks of study, Princeton students presented their martial arts and water sleeves dance movements on the SPOC stage. At the end of the third week, each of the six groups presented their scene on stage with the help of SPOC musicians. As a finale (终场), the Princeton students sang a famous Chinese pop song, “Friend,” to express their thanks to their teachers and hosts.
Teresa Irigoyen— Lopez, a member of the Class of 2019, described the experience, “It was really a hard task for me at first. I had to learn a new musical style in a new language! But becoming part of the experience and performing ourselves was really exciting. All our efforts were worth it!”

8 . “It’s been a long time since I have played such a good character, and I’m deeply attracted by her complexity (复杂),” actress Gong Li told Beijing News. Gong spoke of her latest role as Yu Jin, a movie star and a spy, in the Saturday Fiction (《兰心大剧院》).
“Gong makes use of her timeless screen power to play the role of Yu,” Indie Wire commented. She has the ability to fill tiny moments with surprisingly deep feelings. For example, in a scene, Yu tells the other character to simply “take care”, nothing more. “But Gong’s posture, look and delivery raise this parting greeting to the level of a Greek tragedy,” the Hollywood Reporter noted.
It is such power that earns Gong the praise for being the character she plays in her acting career. In fact, it is a habit for her to spend two or three months preparing for her roles ahead of filming. “Every character is special for me. So I learn special techniques to play them or try to get used to their living environments,” Gong told China Daily. When shooting Saturday Fiction, Gong was trained to quickly load a gun in the darkness, repeating the process many times until the skill almost turned into a physical instinct. Although the gun-loading scene was cut from the final version of the film, Gong said the skill helped her to better understand her character.
Her pure love for films also makes her performance of characters convincing. Gong told CGTN that she tries to live a simple life to get rid of distractions. She hardly appears in reality shows, thus having more time for focusing on the character. “As an actor, sometimes it’s hard to stick to it because there are so many temptations (诱惑). Only true love can make you stick to it,” Gong said.

9 . The war epic The Battle at Lake Changjin, one of the most expensive films ever made in China, shot to the top of the weeklong National Day holiday box office, promoting the domestic film market to rebound (反弹) after being inactive for more than two months.
With three outstanding directors—Chen Kaige, Hark Tsui and Dante Lam—the 176-minute-long film follows Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) who joined the battle, which turned the tide of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953).
With the number of cast and crew reaching an unprecedented scale of more than 12,000, the movie recreates the cruel conflict on the Korean Peninsula (朝鲜半岛) amid the extremely cold winter of 1950, when temperatures lowered to the level in 50 years. The movie’s production involved more than 80 visual-effects companies domestically and abroad, with the script being revised 37 times. Breaking over 10 records, the movie has raked in around 2 billion yuan ($ 310 million) since its opening on Sept 30. It accounted for around 75 percent of total holiday income, which had reached 2.67 billion yuan as of Monday, according to the movie information tracker Beacon. The film has also collected millions of reviews and click son several of the country’s most popular social media platforms, including Weibo and Douyin, with most commenters praising the moving tale and saying it stimulates their national pride, making them want to show their respect for the CPV heroes who sacrificed their lives. Some netizens said the film reminds them, amid the current China-US tension, to cherish today’s peaceful life.
Most analysts said the movies’ commercial success has lived up to the industry’s estimation, giving cinema operators a sign of revival. “With a lot of details to recreate historical reality, The Battle at Lake Changjin has raised the bar for Chinese war films to a new high level, signaling the progress that the domestic industry has achieved,” said Rao Shuguang, president of the China Film Critics Association.
