It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

9 . As the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaches, it is interesting to look at stars who could make an influence. We have looked at the different teams and chosen four players to watch out for in Qatar.
Kylian Mbappé
Mbappé is currently the poster boy of professional football. Aside from incredible club performances, Mbappé has solidified himself as a World Cup performer due to the 2018 World Cup. Here, he was awarded the FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Award and scored an amazing 25-yard strike in the final against Croatia.
Cristiano Ronaldo
The list of awards and honors that Ronaldo has gained is legendary. Though he is 37 yet still considered one of the best players in the world. At this point in their career, most forwards are on the decline and have regressed physically – but not Ronaldo. Ronaldo is the all-time international leading goal scorer, and you can count on him in Qatar.
Lionel Messi
We could not list Cristiano Ronaldo without also including Lionel Messi. He remains a once-in-a-generation talent and has proved himself time and time again as the leading force behind Argentina’s international squad. He is also a major reason why football is the most popular sport in the world. After disappointment in the 2018 World Cup, we can count on Messi to up his game and lead his team in Group C.
Neymar
Neymar is one of the most exciting and legendary Brazilian footballers since Ronaldinho and Ronaldo. He has proved to be an incredible player at both club and international level and has scored 74 goals in 119 appearances for Brazil. On the international stage, Neymar has competed in many events, including the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, the 2015 Copa America and the Olympics.
Who do you think are the players to watch out for? These are only four picks, after all, and there are many more talented stars who will be looking to make their name in Qatar.

Kevin was a “slow” boy. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, Kevin could get along well with other people. And his enthusiasm for life was quite contagious (有感染力的). So, when he discovered that his teacher, Randy Moss, was putting together a basketball team, his mother could only answer, “Yes, you may join.”
Basketball became the center of Kevin’s life. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free-throw line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball.
The day before their first game, Randy gave each player a bright red jersey (运动衫). Kevin had stars in his eyes when he saw his number 12. He quickly put it on and almost never took it off again. Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn’t help you win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night it snowed. and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.
At the end of the season, they had the misfortune to play against the first-place team-the undefeated first-place team. The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.
At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called a time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Mr. Moss, this is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he’s never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket,” said the boy.
With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball.
