In the past few days, the Chinese government officers     3     (announce) the approval of the country’s first hyperloop line. Its     4     (long) will be 175 kilometers, and it will pass between Shanghai and Hangzhou. 3 . The automobile(汽车)has many advantages. Above all, it offers people freedom to go where they want to go, when they want to go there. The basic purpose of a motor vehicle is to get from point A to point B as cheaply, quickly, and safely as possible.

In addition, much of the world’ s economy is built on producing motor vehicles and supplying roads, services and repairs for those vehicles. Half of the world’ s paychecks are auto related. In the United States, one of every six dollars spent and one of every six nonfarm jobs are connected to the automobile or related industries, such as oil, steel, rubber, plastics, automobile services, and highway construction.

In spite of their advantages, motor vehicles have many harmful effects on human lives and on air, water, land, and wild life resources. Since Karl Benz built the first automobile, almost 18 million people have been killed by motor vehicles. In addition to the tragic loss of life, these accidents cost American society about $60 billion annually in lost income and in insurance, administrative, and legal expenses.

Los Angeles is a global symbol of urban sprawl 城市扩张)built around a vast network of freeways. An estimated one third of the city’ s total metropolitan(大都市的)area and two thirds of its downtown area are devoted to roads, parking lots and other automobile related uses. Each day, its network of streets and freeways is crowded with more than five million vehicles, which are responsible for 85% of both the air pollution and the noise in this urban area.

If present trends continue, U.S. motorists will spend an average of two years of their lifetimes in traffic jams. Streets that used to be for people are now for cars. Pedestrians and people riding bicycles in the streets are subjected to noise, pollution, stress, and danger.

Motor vehicles are the largest source of air pollution, producing a haze of smog over the world’ s cities. In the United States, they produce at least 50% of the country’ s air pollution. What do you think should be done?

1. What do we know about the automobile?

4 . If cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2012.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its carplane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2012.

“It’s the next ‘wow’ vehicle, ”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh. “Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”

The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving. A runway is still required to take off and land.

The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.

The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble of trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go. When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.

The carplane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers. Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.

The Transition’s price tag: $194,000. But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS. Another option is a fullplane parachute.

“If you get into a very awful situation, it is the necessary safety option,” Gersh said. So far, the company has more than 70 orders with deposits. “We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,” Brown said.

1. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that________.
A.people might drive a carplane in 2012
B.carplanes will be popular in 2012
C.both Transition and Ferrari can take off and land
D.Richard Gersh is the vice president of Massachusetts
2. It takes the carplane one minute to________.
A.fold and unfold its wingsB.meet flying safety regulations
C.land in the airportD.unfold wings for flying
3. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The carplane needs a runway to take off and land.
B.The carplane may fly as high as normal planes.
C.To meet aircraft regulations, the company has been working with FAA.
D.People can park the carplane in the garage at their home.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Cars with Wings Can Fly As Fast As Plane
B.Which To Choose: A Ferrari Or A CarPlane?
C.A More Convenient and Cheaper Way To Fly
D.Cars with Wings May Be Just Around the Corner

7 . Self-driving vehicles will rely on cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence(AI)to recognize and respond to road and traffic conditions, but sensing is the most effective for objects and movement in the neighborhood of the vehicle. Not everything important in a car’s environment will be caught by the vehicle’s camera. Another vehicle approaching at high speed on a collision (碰撞) track might not be visible until it’s too late. This is why vehicle-to-vehicle communication is undergoing rapid development. Our research shows that cars will need to be able to chat and cooperate on the road, although the technical challenges are considerable.

Applications for vehicle-to-vehicle communication range from vehicles driving together in a row, to safety messages about nearby emergency vehicles. Vehicles could alert each other to avoid collisions or share notices about passers-by and bicycles.

From as far as several hundred meters away, vehicles could exchange messages with one another or receive information from roadside unit’s(RSUs)about nearby incidents or dangerous road conditions through 4G network.

A high level of AI seems required for such vehicles, not only to self -drive from A to B, but also to react intelligently to messages received. Vehicles will need to plan, reason, strategize and adapt in the light of information received in real time and to carry out cooperative behaviors. For example, a group of autonomous vehicles might avoid a route together because of potential risks, or a vehicle could decide to drop someone off earlier due to messages received, a foreseen crow ding ahead.

Further applications of vehicle-to-vehicle communication are still being researched, including how to perform cooperative behavior.

1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The reasons for the accidents by self-driving vehicles.
B.The research about applications for self-driving vehicles.
C.The importance of artificial intelligence of self -driving vehicles.
D.The reasons for developing communication between self -driving vehicles.
2. What does the underlined word “alert” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Alarm.B.Condemn.C.Ignore.D.Govern.
3. What can we learn about roadside units (RSUs)?
A.They classify the vehicles on the road.
B.They can improve bad road conditions.
C.They take over the passing vehicles.
D.They serve as efficient information stations.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.When do vehicles communicate?
B.The reasons why a high level of AI is important.
C.Vehicle-to-vehicle communication is coming.
