1 . Many children are introduced to animals through TV shows or movies. Shaun the Sheep, a popular cartoon series, features a variety of animals living at the Mossy Bottom Farm. Among them, naughty Shaun is the clever leader of his flock of sheep. Sheep in this series look a bit different from common ones because the TV show used the Valais Blacknose sheep the model.

There are few animals that make people say “Aww!” in a high-toned voice as quickly as the Valais Blacknose sheep. As the cutest sheep in the world, these animals come from the Valais region in Switzerland. They are instantly recognizable thanks to their charming appearance. With spiral-shaped horns (螺旋形的角), they have soft, white wool, which contrasts with the black patches spread evenly over their faces and found on their ears, knees, and ankles.

The Valais Blacknose sheep have a rich history deeply rooted in the Swiss Alps. They were originally raised in the 15th century for their highly valued wool. However, it was not until 1962 that they were officially recognized as a breed (品种). Their population once dwindled, but continuous efforts have been made to protect this unique breed. These efforts have been successful, and the Valais Blacknose sheep can now be found in various parts of the globe.

Looking like a combination of a lamb and a teddy bear, the Valais Blacknose sheep has found its place in the hearts of many people. They are also raised as pets due to their adorable, gentle, and friendly nature, which makes them perfect companions. However, it’s important for owners to consider their needs, including suitable living environment, nutrition (营养), and space to get around. Whether as wool producers or beloved pets, the Valais Blacknose sheep have gained their fame in being helpful animals.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.

We lived in a quiet street with very little traffic so my mom let my brothers and me play out in the front yard a lot. One day we were outside playing when I saw something move under a bush near our neighbor's house. It looked very strange so we went over to check it out.

It was a puppy(小狗)II sat down in the grass and clapped my hands and it came running over to me and jumped on my lap.I was so happy.I had been begging my parents for a puppy for a long time and here it was.My brothers were going crazy.

I carefully carried the puppy to our yard and yelled with excitement,"Mom,Mom,guess what I found under the bush next door?"My mom came out of the room, looked at me,looked at the puppy and then back at me. "Mom,I think it's lost;it doesn't have a collar(项圈)or any tags.   And Mom,it surely looks hungry.”

Mom got a bowl and filled it with water. Then she got some food from the refrigerator and put it in another bowl.I put the puppy down. She ran joyfully over to the bowls and started eating and drinking.I was right…she was hungry. After a full meal, she curled up into a ball and went to sleep. My brothers and I just sat on the floor and watched her contentedly, praying this   moment would last forever.

My mom said that we needed to try and find the owner of the puppy.I didn't want to do that.I wanted to keep the puppy for my own.But Mom said that the owner was probably worried about the puppy and sorry that she was gone. She asked me how I would feel if I had lost my puppy.Would I want the person who found it to try and find me?Or just keep the puppy?

"Maybe she is right,”I thought.

文章大意:本文是说明文。主要介绍了千岁兰这一植物,解释了其能够在极端环境中生存的原因,并探讨了其基因组的特点以及潜在的农业应用价值。

4 . The vicinity (地区), between southern Angola and northern Namibia, is home to a leafy green plant that can live up to 1,000 years. This “Immortal” plant’s lifespan encourages researchers wondering why, out of all climates the world has to offer, this plant finds itself to thrive in the harsh, dry, and quite unforgiving Namib Desert known to reach less than two inches of rainfall a year.

Welwitschia (千岁兰), meaning “two leaves that cannot die,” in Afrikaans, was discovered by biologists Charles Darwin and the botanist Friedrich Welwitsch, whom the plant was named after in 1859. Andrew Leitch, a plant geneticist at Queen Mary University of London, explains, “Generally speaking, this plant can live thousands of years. When it does stop growing, it’s dead.

Nature Communications, a study published in July, conducted research to discover and identify the magic within Welwitschia’s genetic makeup. Researchers were able to infer, “Approximately 86 million years ago, after a mistake in cell division, the entire Welwitschia genome (基因组) doubled during a time of increased and prolonged drought in the region.” Additional research concluded that repeated genes lost their defining purposes, allowing some to develop new functions. But because DNA reproduction consumes high levels of energy, repeated genes can at times cause more harm than good, especially in severe weather conditions.

This plant also has more magic coming out of its leaves. Unlike most plants, where the leaves grow from the ends of its stem and branches, the Welwitschia’s leaves grow from a “vulnerable” area called the basal meristem (分生组织), which supplies fresh cells to the growing plant. The combination of internal and external factors of the Welwitschia has allowed the plant to continue thriving in extreme temperature conditions. Researchers are hopeful that Welwitschia can also provide insight into the agricultural industry and how we can develop drought tolerant crops.

1. What does the underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Grow well.B.Fade away.C.Rise up.D.Break down.
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The Welwitschia must have a life span of several thousand years or more.
B.Copied genes can do more harm than good due to energy consumption.
C.Biologist Charles Darwin named the Welwitschia in 1859.
D.The Welwitschia’s leaves, like most plants, grow from the basal meristem.
3. What can Welwitschia do according to researchers in Paragraph 4?
A.Solve the crisis facing the agricultural industry.
B.Give a deeper understanding of the agricultural industry.
C.Be planted as drought tolerant crops in the future.
D.Not bear extreme temperature conditions.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Copied Genomes of a Long-lived Plant.
B.Two Leaves That Cannot Die.
C.The “Immortal” Plant Tells Its Tale.
D.Agricultural Development with Welwitschia.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是复活节期间保证宠物安全的一些注意事项。

9 . Flowers, candies, and hidden eggs are all traditions humans look forward to during Easter. But they can also ruin the day pretty quickly if your dog or cat happens to get into them.

Most pet owners know that chocolate can be very dangerous to cats and dogs. Calls to the Pet Poison Helpline rise sharply due to suspected chocolate ingestion around Easter. In fact, the calls concerning dogs that have been poisoned by chocolate increased by nearly 200% during the week of Easter. So it’s as vital as ever to keep Easter baskets and candy bunnies away from pets.

“A common flower that veterinarians (兽医) warn cat owners against is lilies. Even eating a small amount of this flower can cause deadly kidney failure in cats,” Certified veterinarian Amanda Takiguchi, DVM, said in a statement. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, lilies are the most common toxin (毒素) to cats, making up 12.3% of all calls to the hotline.

“Many species of lilies are toxic to cats, so it’s best to avoid lilies altogether. Owners need to be especially cautious around Easter when these flowers are more popular.”Amanda Takiguchi, DVM said.

Egg hunts are fun for everyone but could cause trouble for curious pets. Depending on the type of eggs you use, however, curious pets may get themselves hurt trying to partake in the fun.

Hard-boiled eggs are generally okay for cats and dogs, but the paint used to decorate the shells should not be consumed. If you use plastic eggs and hide treasures inside, it is especially important to ensure all of the eggs have been found by the end of your hunt so your pets don’t discover them later down the road. It’s also important to ensure they don’t have access to the eggs or the treats hidden inside during the hunt.

“Curious cats and dogs could put themselves in danger by chewing or even accidentally eating these decorations,” veterinarian Rebecca MacMillan told TrustedHousesitters. “Fragile egg-shaped baubles could easily shatter, and small fluffy toy chicks are just the right size to be swallowed. This is why you should always keep any decorations out of reach from your pets.”

1. Who is the passage intended for?
A.Veterinarians.B.Pet trainers.C.Pet owners.D.Animal experts.
2. What will easily cause kidney failure in cats?
A.Swallowing the Easter eggs.B.Eating a small amount of lily.
C.Playing with fluffy toy chicks.D.Consuming a certain amount of chocolates.
3. What will Rebecca MacMillan probably agree with?
A.It’s common to feed dogs hard-boiled eggs.
B.It’s impossible to keep pets away from Easter eggs.
C.It’s better not to put up any decorations during Easter.
D.It’s unsafe to keep Easter decorations within pets’ easy reach.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title?
A.Easter pet safety.B.An unsafe Easter.
C.Proper pet food.D.Furry family members.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a sunny day with no clouds, Sally sat on a chair in the garden, hemming (缝边) a handkerchief. All of a sudden, there came a little ant. It was in such a hurry. Finally it ran across the small stone table and stopped by her side. The sewing was not done, for Sally easily got a little bit distracted by this little ant. Suddenly, she dropped her thimble (顶针) over the little ant by accident while she was looking at it.“Can it mind? But it is only such a little tiny thing,”said Sally in doubt.

Then Sally ran away, for her mother called her to have lunch, and she forgot all about the ant under the thimble and the handkerchief outside. There the little ant was, running round and round in the dark place, with little horns on its head quivering, little perfect legs bending as beautifully as those of a racehorse, and it was very scared.

If Sally had remembered the ant, she would have heard this little ant say, “I can’t get out! I can’t get out! Is there anyone out there? Can someone help me out?” But unfortunately, till the bedtime, Sally failed to hear the little ant's silent calling and just went to sleep. In the midnight, there was thunder, lightning and heavy rain. The next day, when Sally woke up, she came to the garden, only to find the handkerchief was soaked (湿透的) as if somebody had been crying very much. When she was about to fetch it as soon as the sun shone, it suddenly came to her who was under the thimble. “Oh, how could I forget that little ant? I hope the little ant is doing fine,”said Sally, running with her worried face.

But when she lifted up the thimble, what came to her sight was the little tiny an t lay stiff and still. It seemed like this little poor thing was away from this world. “Oh, did it die of being under the thimble?”Sally said aloud with her trembling voice. “Why did you do that, Sally?”said her father, who was close by and looked unsatisfied.
