文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究发现,接触鸟,包括赏鸟、听鸟鸣等有助于人的心理健康。

1 . Are you a fan of birds? If so, you may have admired their beautiful colors and sweet songs. But do you know these feathered friends can actually do more than that?

A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that exposure to birds, either in the home or outdoors, can boost people’s moods.

Researchers at King’s College London used a smartphone app built by the school’s Urban Mind project to collect the real-time feelings of study participants upon seeing or hearing a bird. A total of 1,292 people living in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States participated in the study which was conducted between April 2018 and October 2021.

The app asked participants three times a day whether they could see or hear a bird followed by a series of questions on their mental well-being. Participants were also asked questions about whether they could see trees, plants or hear any water to see if people were experiencing better mental well-being due to being in or seeing nature, and not just because of exposure to birds.

According to the study, the mental well-being of study participants with and without depression was significantly improved after seeing a bird or hearing birdsong compared to not seeing or hearing a bird.

There is a growing number of studies that link spending time outdoors (either in green leafy places or next to bodies of water) to improved mental health. But there are few studies that look at how different aspects of nature can play into humans’ mental well-being.

And while the study adds to the small pile of research on birds and mental health, the report marks the first time researchers have studied the responses to birds and mental well-being in real-time, according to Ryan Hammoud, lead author of the study.

“They kind of examine nature as a single object when nature includes many different characteristics and features like trees, plants, water, birds,” said Hammoud, “We choose to focus on bird life to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental well-being.”

1. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a phenomenon.B.To bring in the topic.
C.To ask an interesting question.D.To provide background information.
2. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By analyzing previous studies.B.By observing the behavior of birds.
C.By gathering feelings of participants.D.By studying people’s effect on birds.
3. What does Hammoud think of the new study?
A.Pioneering.B.Interesting.C.Conventional.D.Practical.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Bird watching has become a popular hobby.
B.Exposure to birds can improve mental well-being.
C.Nature is the best medicine for mental health issues.
D.Spending time outdoors can impact mental health positively.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了研究人员如何利用蜜蜂收集城市中的微生物信息,通过分析蜂巢残骸揭示城市微生物环境的多样性及可能对人类健康的影响。

2 . Much like our guts (内脏), cities too have various types of microorganisms (微生物) that grow in the environment. And, much like analyzing the microorganisms in our guts can show important details about our physical condition, doing the same thing with a city’s microorganisms can help us understand data on the kinds of bacteria and other small life forms that are living alongside urban people.

While it’s possible to use human researchers to collect data on a city’s microorganisms, that kind of field research can be costly, difficult, and time-consuming. In 2010, honeybees in Brooklyn visited a nearby cherry factory, producing bright-red honey. This caused researchers to examine what other things New York’s honeybees were bringing back to their hives. It struck the researchers that this might be an easier way to collect microorganisms than to search for them on subway poles or sidewalks. So in a new study, researchers decided to seek help from the honeybee, which spends its days exploring cities all over the world, to learn about the urban microenvironments.

The team analyzed hive debris (碎片) from around the world and had some interesting findings. In Sydney, the hive debris showed DNA from microorganisms that can break down rubber, while in Melbourne, a significant amount of DNA from eucalyptus, a kind of tree originally from Australia, appeared at the bottom of hives. And the hive debris from Venice had microorganisms commonly found in rotting wood.

The analysis of Tokyo hives not only found DNA from local unique microorganisms, but also showed the presence of a microorganism that can cause disease among humans. This finding led the team to believe that using bees to learn about urban environments might be a great way to track the spread of human diseases.

While the study is still at the initial stage and it remains to be seen whether honeybees will help scientists find diseases or help city planners make cities greener one day, the insects’ great promise as little research helpers is obvious.

1. What does the author want to express in the first paragraph?
A.The significance of studying microorganisms in cities.
B.The role of small life forms in urban ecosystems.
C.The relationship between microorganisms and human health.
D.The similarities of microorganisms in our guts and those in cities.
2. Why did researchers turn to honeybees for help?
A.They are skilled at exploring remote places.
B.They are willing to be close to human researchers.
C.They can collect cities’ microorganisms in a productive way.
D.They have a natural talent for recognizing microorganisms.
3. What does the new study find out?
A.Bees in Venice primarily feed on rotting wood.
B.Hive debris from diverse places has unique DNA material.
C.Bees in Melbourne have the ability to break down rubber.
D.Bees exhibit different living habits based on their living places.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Honeybees Can Help Analyze DNA from Microorganisms
B.Microorganisms are Significant to Human Health
C.Honeybees Reveal Urban Microorganisms through Hive Debris
D.Urban Microenvironment’s Richness is Beyond our Imagination

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了研究表明,老年人靠近绿色和蓝色自然空间能显著提升身心健康,哪怕是自然环境的小幅增加也有益处,强调保护城市自然环境对公共健康的潜在重要性。

3 . In a study from Washington State University, researchers have uncovered a significant correlation between the closeness of older adults to green and blue spaces and their mental and physical well-being. The study offers convincing evidence that even small increases in access to nature can remarkably improve the health outcomes of older adults.

A mere 10% increase in forest space within a person’s living environment is linked to a noticeable decrease in serious psychological conditions. This type of suffering includes mental health challenges that need treatment and block normal social, occupational, or educational functioning. Similarly, the new study proves that enhancing green spaces, water bodies, or trail lengths by 10% appears to lower the likelihood of older individuals reporting their overall health as poor.

The researchers analyzed health survey data from over 42,000 people aged 65 and above living in urban areas of Washington state, spanning (跨越) the years 2011 to 2019. The experts related the health outcomes of these individuals to various measures quantifying their access to nature within their living areas.

Initially presented at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting in April 2023, the research focused only on the link between psychological depression and closeness to natural spaces. The final study expanded to include additional metrics (指标) such as green space percentage and trail length, also taking into account demographic variables (人口统计变量) like race and education.

“Our findings suggest that abatement of our urban green and blue spaces due to rapid urbanization may not just have an environmental impact but could have a public health impact as well,” said Adithya Vegaraju, first author of the study.

Vegaraju said this research is among the first in the U. S. to specifically investigate the relationship between access to nature and health in the older population.

1. What does the author intend to stress in the second paragraph?
A.Access to nature can improve the elders’ mental health.
B.Older individuals are more likely to get close to nature.
C.Green space is an ideal place for educational functioning.
D.A person’s social interaction is linked to more green space.
2. How do the researchers conduct the research?
A.By changing old people’s living habits.B.By tracking and recording the aged people.
C.By comparing various measures in the study.D.By analyzing the participants’ related data.
3. What does the underlined word “abatement” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Solution.B.Impact.C.Loss.D.Power.
4. What does Vegaraju think of the study?
A.It needs further research.B.It’s a pioneer research work.
C.It is beneficial to everyone.D.It will be used in other fields.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一只名为娜拉的猫如何在斯蒂夫尼奇火车站为通勤者的早晨增添乐趣的故事。

5 . The morning commute(通勤)is never fun, but if you pass through Stevenage on your way to work, your morning might be a little brighter thanks to Nala the cat.

Dragging yourself out of bed in the morning and off to work is hard, especially on dark winter mornings. You might be a little more inclined to head out of the house with a spring in your step if your commute started at Stevenage Station, where you’d be greeted by a ginger cat called Nala.

Usually found sitting on a ticket gate, four-year-old Nala lives close to the station with her owner Natasha Ambler, and often heads to station at rush hour to enjoy attention from commuters. Ambler created a social media page called The Adventures of Nala where hundreds of people have shared photos of the adventurous cat.

Recent photos include Nala waiting in line for her “cat-purr-ccino” at Costa, snoozing(打盹)on newspaper stands and posing with commuters at the station barriers.

Nala wears a GPS tracking device so that her travels can be traced, and is usually found at the railway station or the next door leisure park. As well as the usual collar with her name and owner’s contact information, Nala wears a tag to let people know that she’s not lost.

Ambler reported that she’s not worried about Nala in the slightest: She’s obviously well-loved and she’s very happy doing what she does—I just hope one day she doesn’t actually try to get on a train.

Nala brings a ray of joy to Stevenage commuters with her playful antics. Her presence not only brightens mornings but also fosters a sense of community, as evidenced by the shared photos and interactions on social media. Her owner’s care and Nala’s adventurous spirit ensure that she’s a beloved and safe addition to the station environment.

7 . Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are a very important part of Mexico’s ecosystem, but because of the ever-spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. That’s where 73-year-old Catia Lattouf de Arida comes in. As a self-taught hummingbird care-taker, she devotes most of her free time and resources to nursing the tiny birds back to health. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital.

Catia’s story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression (抑郁). She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why? Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life.

Word of her success spread among Catia’s friends, and before long some of them began bringing her injured hummingbirds. She didn’t repulse them at all. She began to study the bird and their habits in order to better take care of them, and after 11 years of experience, the 73-year-old woman is considered an expert on hummingbirds.

In order to raise awareness of the difficult situation of hummingbirds in Mexico, Catia Lattouf de Arida started posting videos of the patients in her Mexico City apartment on social media, and many of them became popular. That’s when the need for her nursing services really blew up. She has cared for hundreds of hummingbirds in her 11-year career, when she has had as many as 50 of them in her apartment at any one time. She spends pretty much all her time looking after the tiny birds.
