I had ordered many gifts online for the upcoming Christmas. One day, when the doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages arrived. I opened the door, but only to find a beautiful little dog sitting on the floor. It looked up at me with her big, cute eyes. I looked around, but there was no one in sight. It was obvious that someone had found the puppy somewhere and intentionally left her outside the door.
The lovely dog was a timely Christmas gift for me,indeed. The year marked a turning point in my life. In September,my husband was offered a new job in Africa. Feeling that I had hit a career bottleneck as a photographer journalist,I decided to relocate with him. While my husband was busy with his work,I didn’t know what to do anyway. I felt isolated, homesick and lacking purpose. We lived in a house near a river that cut across an expansive grassland. With few people around,I would take my camera and wander around, photographing aimlessly every day.
So we adopted the abandoned dog. My husband called her“our little angel”and I named it accordingly. Angel seemed to be very happy with us and she turned out to be a perfect companion for me. Always by my side, she enjoyed exploring the shady bushes and mysterious tunnels all over the grassland. Encouraged by her curiosity,I decided to explore, too.
There was a deep cave near our house and I had been eager to explore it. The only way in was narrow and slippery. I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t do it unless he was around. But he was always busy. With Angel as my companion,I figured that it was time to stretch the rule a little bit.
One day, I equipped myself with a good flashlight and carefully walked down the dark cave. Suddenly, Angel, who had been following me closely, rushed ahead and disappeared into the darkness.

4 . At first glance the sea turtles look as if they were dead because they hardly move. But if you look closely enough, they show a slow glimpse of life. These turtles are all washed up in Massachusetts every December, on the windy beaches of Cape Cod Bay.
Shaver, chief of the Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery at Padre Island National Seashore in Texas, said, “If we don’t help save this species, we will lose a piece that enriches us. There’s a whole variety of things that can harm them: oil spills, boat strikes, red tides, and so on.” That is why all the urgent care they’re getting back up North is more important than ever.
Saving could never happen unless hundreds of pilots were willing to volunteer their time, their planes, and their fuel to rush the rescued turtles to willing rehab facilities (康复中心) all around the country.
On this particular mission, Andrews, vice president of a unique nonprofit called Turtles Fly Too, with his dad as a co-pilot, will fly more than 2,000 miles, from Boston, to Atlanta, then on to Gulfport and finally Dallas, dropping off 44 sick sea turtles along the way, in hopes that one day they’ll be well enough to be released. It is worth mentioning that the pilots that are flying these missions are pulling $1 million out of their pocket to fly these missions every year.
With good care and the help of volunteers, these turtles were finally ready to go home again. According to Andrews, “90% of the turtles that we’ve moved to the rehab facilities have ended up back in the ocean.”
“We humans have not always been kind to the sea and those that live in it. But on this day, it was humans-not me, but the hundreds of veterinarians, biologists, volunteers, and pilots—who all came together to give these critically-endangered sea turtles a second chance that they rarely got, ”Andrews added.

6 . On an October morning in 2021, ornithologist (鸟类学家) Mark A. Michaels spotted a bird in a forest, which he first thought was a duck based on its size and long neck. But then he noticed it sometimes folding its wings during flight, something he says that ducks don’t do-but woodpeckers do. “Ivory-billed woodpecker (象牙喙啄木鸟)!” he shouted, certain that the bird was a species that hasn’t been clearly identified in the wild since 1944.
Michaels has had several possible ivory-bill encounters, but he couldn’t be fully certain. This sighting was different. “That was the first time I had been absolutely sure,” he says.
But not everyone agrees this woodpecker remains in the wild. In September 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) put forward a ruling that would declare the ivory-billed woodpecker, along with 22 other species, extinct. However, the supportive data are debated. As a result, on July 6,2022, the agency gave the woodpecker an extension of six months before deciding whether to strip away its protected status (地位) as an existing endangered species.
This case highlights some challenges researchers face in determining whether a species has actually gone extinct. “It’s difficult to prove the absence of something,” says ecologist H. Resit Akcakaya, and so a lack of sightings is not necessarily evidence of extinction.
Moreover, there are costs to making the wrong call about a species’ existence in the wild. Continuing to classify (界定) an actually extinct species as endangered can misdirect financial resources away from protecting vulnerable (脆弱的) species to searching for ones that no longer exist. On the other hand, declaring something extinct when it isn’t can do further harm to a struggling species. “If we think a species is extinct, we no longer have to protect it,” Akcakaya says, “and then it may actually go extinct.”
In the case of the ivory-billed woodpecker, Michaels could do nothing but await USFWS’s ruling. But he was glad that the agency gave the extension. “I’m personally one hundred percent sure that it’s out there,” says Michaels.

Earlier in the year, as a group of young and ambitious men, we set out plans for a butterfly garden on an area of greenspace right in the heart of the village. We intended to provide a place for students from nearby schools to learn about nature.
I, the group leader, first drew up a plan showing my ideas and thoughts, where we would depend on donation for us to buy wildflower seeds. As it turned out, my partners, the other group members, had other plans.
While we were waiting to see if our funding would come through, Butterfly Conservation Scotland offered us enough wildflower mix seeds to cover the whole of the area which we’d marked on our plan. But the problem was that the seeds would have to be sown (播种) within the next two weeks, which also meant that the weeds in the area should be removed before we could sow seeds. Then I went to ask the nearby farmers whether they could use their machines to remove the weeds, but no one had time to lend a hand.
It was suggested that we buy a machine. But without much money, where could we find a machine to remove the weeds? When we didn’t know what to do, a teacher called Lily from a nearby school approached us and asked if we needed some help. I told her the truth about the situation. “My father is a farmer and has his own machine. Don’t worry, I can get him to help,” she said. We thanked her several times for it.
On Sunday, as expected, Lily’s father brought a weeding machine and removed the weeds in person. Meanwhile, all the group members including me were busy in the field. Considering the tight schedule, I sent out a call on the Internet for volunteers to help. One of my partners joked, “No one will have the time to help us for free, so let’s pick up the weeds ourselves.” I believed there were many helpful people around us, so I just smiled back.

Meagan and her close friend Samantha, both school teachers, lived together in an apartment in Denver. On mornings when Samantha had class, Meagan would help to watch her 2-year-old daughter, Hannah. Also part of the household was Meagan’s pet, Willie, a particularly intelligent and chatty parrot.
Willie was indeed funny and a good talker. In addition to some vocabulary learned from Meagan, he became a great mimic (会模仿的动物) of cats, dogs, and chickens. Plus, he could sing along to the radio. The bird was a nice playmate for the little girl, and he always knew how to lift her spirits. The bird was more than just a pet; he was a member of the family.
One day, with Samantha at school, Hannah had comfortably positioned herself in front of morning cartoons while Meagan was busy cooking in the kitchen, preparing the little girl her favorite breakfast treat, an apple pie. When Meagan was done baking the apple pie, she placed it at the center of the kitchen table to cool. She looked at Hannah and, confident the child was fully engaged with the TV, walked out of the kitchen quickly to use the bathroom.
Meagan was gone maybe 30 seconds. And suddenly, she heard the bird going crazy, screaming loudly. She heard two very distinct words from the parrot’s mouth. “Mama! Baby!” Repeated over and over again. “Mama! Baby! Mama! Baby!”
Meagan ran out of the bathroom to find Hannah in the kitchen, holding the partly eaten apple pie, fighting for breath, her face and lips a terrifying shade of blue. And Willie was still screaming loudly.Hannah had climbed up on a chair, gotten the apple pie from the kitchen table and was clearly choking on it.
