2 . New research from the University of Portsmouth has shown a marked increase in shipping in the North East Atlantic. Scientists now warn that more monitoring is required to help protect sea life.
Researchers at the University of Ponsmouth have discovered that rates (率) of shipping in the North East Atlantic area rose by 34 per cent in a five-year period. The research is the first detailed survey of shipping activity in the North East Atlantic. Researchers used data from over 530 million vessel (船) positions recorded by Automatic Identification System(AIS). They looked at the change in shipping between 2013 and 2017 across ten different vessel types. In total the study area covered 1.1 million km², including waters off Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany,Iceland, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal. Spain, and the UK.
Lead author, James Robbins said: “This change is likely to put more pressure on the marine (海洋的) environment, and may influence the protection of at-risk species. Renewed monitoring effort is needed to make sure that protective measures are enough to save species under threat in a changing environment.”
Some of the greatest shipping increases were found in areas close to the Spanish coast. The Espacio Marino de la Costa da Morte saw a rise of 413 percent in vessel activity. It is an area used to protect seabirds.
Dr. Sarah Marley, Visiting Researcher at the University of Portsmouth, said: “Shipping is the most widespread human activity in our oceans, carrying a set of threats-from unnoticeable effects like underwater noise pollution to serious results when ships hit whales.”
Professor Alex Ford. from the University’s Institute of Marine Sciences, said: “Given the well-documented effects that shipping can have on the marine environment, it is necessary that this situation continues to be monitored-particularly in areas used to protect vulnerable (脆弱的) species which may already be under pressure.”

Replace Lawns (草坪)
Fertilizers and pesticides (化肥和杀虫剂) help establish a beautiful lawn.
Use Less Water
Use Locally-Produced Materials
Materials for landscaping are almost all produced locally, due to the high shipping cost.
Lower Garden Maintenance (维护)
Usually, Americans spend two hours per day on lawn and garden care.
Reduce Ice Build-up
Sustainable landscape allows stormwater to drain (流) into the soil.

C.Yet little maintenance is needed for a landscaped area. |
D.The water landscaping uses mainly comes from nature. |
E.There are ways to lower your impact on the environment. |
F.So there is often less ice formation on landscaping in cold winters. |
G.But they can run into the water system and harm both humans and wildlife. |
5 . India and China are leading the world greening task, a latest NASA study said on Monday. It has found that the world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago. Recent satellite data shows the greening pattern (模式) is very clear in China and India.
Data from NASA Earth satellites shows that human activities in China and India influence the greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting and agriculture. The influence comes mostly from great tree-planting programs in China and modern agriculture in both countries.
China’s great influence on the global greening mainly comes from its programs to keep and make forests larger in size. The goals of the programs are to make less land degradation (退化), less air pollution, and less climate change.
“When the greening of the Earth was first noticed, we thought it was because of a warmer, wetter climate. Now with the satellite data, we see that humans are also playing an important part,” said Rama Nemani, research scientist at NASA and writer of the study.
“Once people realize there is a problem, they may try to deal with it. In the 1970s and 1980s in India and China, the situation about vegetation (植被) loss was severe. In the 1990s, people realize it, and today things have improved. Humans are very strong. That’s what we see in the satellite data,” adding Neman.
Land areas used to grow crops are comparable in China and India more than 770,000 square miles—and have not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet, these areas have great increased both their green leaf areas and their food production.

6 . In Copenhagen, an 8-year dream was realized when the first paid skiers took their runs down a one-third-mile course (路线).They skied on what is possibly the greenest power factory in the world. The factory is so clean and safe that designers were able to turn its buildings into a new center for social life.
The waste-to-power factory itself opened in 2017 under the name Amager Bakke.Bjarke Ingels is the architect whose company came up with the idea eight years ago of designing a power plant building that would join mountain sports into its very nature.
“It is the cleanest waste-to-energy power plant in the world. It is not only better for the environment, it is also more enjoyable for the lives of its citizens.” Ingels says 97% of city people get their heating as a by-product of energy production. It comes from a system where the electricity, heating, and waste disposal (处理) are mixed into a single process. He dreams that it is also becoming an example that others can look to and say, “If Copenhagen can do it why can' t we?"
There are no hills in this island city, but now people can ski locally, while enjoying the best views ever seen of the harbor.Another thing missing here is snow cover throughout the winter, so designers set up a kind of special "plastic grass" that provides the perfect friction (摩擦力) for downhill winter sports.
In a country where 600, 000 skiers always had to travel to practice sking, to be able to finally ski in their backyard-and, all year round - is, as one skier said, “AMAZING.”
The company hopes to see 300, 000 visitors enjoying the experience of Copen hill each year, with the ski slope costing $ 22 an hour or just $ 366 for a full season pass.Meanwhile, the city is one step closer to its final goal of becoming the world's first carbon-neutral city by 2025.We think it might be all “down hill” from here.

7 . There are many things that we can do in our own ways which will help save the environment. What are some of these ways to save the environment? Let’s take a look at a list of them.
There won’t be enough water before we need to fight for clean and fresh water. That is why saving water and preventing water pollution becomes very important. Keep simple things in mind like turning off the tap when you are brushing teeth. Don’t often take a shower. Don’t pour oil into the drains. Don’t throw rubbish into the river.
Save paper to save trees. Make sure that you use both sides of paper before throwing it away. If you can, try not to use paper as possible as you can and do not forget to recycle paper. Also, using cloth bags instead of paper bags can save much Paper. This is one of the best ways to save our environment.
Recycling is important. It makes sure that the environment is not more polluted. Recycling does not simply include recycling paper, but things like plastic, metal and office supplies like pens, ink and more. This makes sure that they are changed into material that is reusable and also puts less pressure on the environment.
What are the ways to save energy? Turn off the lights and computers before you leave. Use cold water instead of hot water to wash clothes, use the stairs instead of the lift and keep the air conditioner on moderate setting(设置)to save energy.
In a word, try our best to do something to save our environment, and we will do something helpful to save ourselves.
1. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?A.Saving water. | B.Saving paper. |
