文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了由于广泛的捕猎和诱捕,导致狼的数量急剧减少,因此美国科罗拉多州颁布一项提案,重新引入灰狼,以保持当地的自然平衡。

1 . Wolves once ranged over most of North America. But they were nearly wiped out by the early 20th century in the neighbor U. S. by widespread hunting and trapping. Much of them were funded by government , and only a small population were hanging on in the Great Lakes region. They were put on the Endangered Species List in the 1970s, and in 1995 and 1996 the federal government reintroduced wolves to Yellowstone National Park and Idaho. But wolves still don’t have stable numbers in Colorado. Voters narrowly(勉强地)approved a proposal, giving the way for gray wolves to be reintroduced into Colorado, where they nearly died out by the 1940s.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will lead the effort to establish a sustainable (可持续的)population of the animals in the western part of the state, beginning in 2022 or 2023. The Southern Rocky Mountains contain millions of acres of suitable habitat land that could support several hundred wolves or more, biologists say.

Those who were against the proposal admitted they lost, but the vote was close. As of Thursday afternoon, with 90 percent of the votes in, there were 1,495,523 votes for and 1,475,235 against.   “Reintroducing wolves will help thin out sick animals, keeping healthy populations of deer, and thus protecting the grass and reducing erosion (土壤侵蚀). ”says Jonathan Proctor.

People in rural areas are against the reintroduction proposal, including farmers, who worry that wolves will kill their cattle. Many don’t agree to leave the question of reintroduction to voters.

Supporters point to the successful reintroduction of wolves to the Northern Rockies in the 1990s, where only one in 10, 000 cattle in wolf-occupied counties is killed by the hunters, Proctor says. The Colorado proposal will also fund a program to make up for the farm animals being killed.

1. What’s the function of Paragraph 1?
A.Finding typical examples.
B.Introducing wildlife research.
C.Giving the reason for the proposal.
D.Discussing the numbers about migration.
2. The local farmers are against the reintroduction proposal because they think the wolves will ___________.
A.kill their cattleB.cause erosion
C.thin out sick animalsD.protect the grass
3. What is the purpose of reintroducing wolves?
A.To increase the farmers’ interests.
B.To keep Colorado’s natural balance.
C.To contribute to gradual soil erosion.
D.To cause concern about the climate change.
4. What will the local farmers get from the proposal?
A.Suggestions from biologists.
B.Extra fund for losing farm animals.
C.Knowledge of raising farm animals.
D.The right to reclaim their valuable land.

2 . Ecotourism has become increasingly popular in recent years.Travelers visit natural environments funding conservation efforts or promoting local economies. In many cases, ecotourism involves close interaction with wildlife.

Now, scientists have analyzed more than 100 research studies on how ecotourism affects wild animals. They find the presence of humans changes the way animals behave, and those changes may put them at risk. Therefore, they have concluded that such trips can be harmful to the animals.

When animals interact in seemingly kind ways with humans, they may let down their guard. As animals learn to relax in the presence of humans, they may become bolder in other situations. If this transfers to their interactions with predators (捕食者), they are more likely to be injured or killed.

The presence of humans can also discourage natural predators. It creates a kind of safe place for smaller animals that may make them bolder. For example, in Grand Teton National Park, elk and pronghorns in areas with more tourists are less watchful and spend more time eating.

Interacting with people can cause great changes in the characteristics of various species over time.“If animals become accustomed to tourists, we might create unintended consequences — affecting the behavior or population of a species and influencing the species’ function in its community,” the researchers write.

Ecotourism has effects similar to those of animal domestication (驯养) and urbanization.Research has shown that domesticated silver foxes become more obedient and less fearful.Fox squirrels and birds that live in urbanized areas are slower to flee from danger. The phenomena result from evolutionary changes, but also from regular interactions with humans.

Scientists hope the new analysis will encourage more research into the interactions between people and wildlife. It is essential to develop further understanding of how various species in various situations respond to human interaction and under what conditions human exposure may place them at risk.

1. We can learn from the passage that ___________.
A.ecotourism causes damage to the natural homes of wildlife
B.it is easy for eco-tourists to build up trust with wild animals
C.the effects brought by ecotourism may be harmful to the animals
D.wildlife interactions with humans strengthen their function in community
2. What does the underlined word “bolder” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.shyerB.braverC.wiserD.swifter
3. The author mentions pronghorns in paragraph 4 as an example to show that ________.
A.wild animals become more relaxed due to evolution
B.animals’ reactions to humans vary from species to species
C.smaller animals tend to be in harmony with natural predators
D.the presence of humans reduces their awareness of potential danger
4. What might be the best title for the text?
A.Ecotourism Can Put Wild Animals at Risk
B.Ecotourism Has Become A Popular Trend
C.Wildlife’s Reactions to Human Activities
D.Latest Research Findings on Ecotourism

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文中强调了海洋的重要性,指出如今海洋正在遭受人类的破坏,作者认为海洋的健康意味着我们的健康,我们应该共同努力保护海洋。

3 . Ninety-seven percent of Earth’s water is ocean. No blue, no green. If you think the ocean isn’t important, imagine Earth without it. Fifty years ago, when I began exploring the ocean, no one realized that we human being could do anything to harm the ocean.

For me, as a woman scientist, it all began in 1953 when I first tried diving. In 1979, by using a submersible, I had a chance to reach the ocean floor which was six miles offshore and 1,250 feet down. Since then, I’ve used about 30 kinds of submarines. We need new deep-diving submersible. We need to see the undersea mountains and understand life in the deep sea. Exploring and protecting the wild ocean is my big wish.

What’s worrying us is that an ice free Arctic Ocean may happen in this century. That’s bad news for the polar bears. Additional CO2 is not only driving global warming, but also changing ocean chemistry, making the sea more acidic. That’s bad news for coral reefs and oxygen-producing plankton(浮游生物). Actually, nearly half of the coral reefs have disappeared. We’re putting hundreds of millions of tons of plastic and other rubbish into the sea. We’re blocking the ocean, poisoning the planet’s circulatory system. Most of the turtles, sharks, tunas and whales are way down in numbers. All of these are part of our life support system.

Health to the ocean means health for us. I wish we would use all means—films, explorations, the web, new submarines—and campaign to stimulate public support for ocean protected areas. My wish is a big wish, but if we can make it happen, it can truly save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet. For the children of today, for tomorrow’s children: as never again, now is the time.

1. Why does the writer say “No blue, no green.” in the first paragraph?
A.To tell us the colors of the earth.B.To refer to the ocean and the land.
C.To show the importance of ocean.D.To encourage us to explore the ocean.
2. What should we do to protect the ocean according to the text?
A.Make joint efforts.B.Save life support system.
C.Encourage children to take action.D.Explore the ocean by new technology.
3. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the current situation of the ocean?
A.Negative.B.Concerned.C.Uncertain.D.Indifferent.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就个人如何帮助拯救环境提出了一些建议。

4 . Saving the environment might seem like a tall order, but living an environmentally friendly life is actually quite easy. With just a few small lifestyle changes, you can make a difference.     1

Recycle.

Recycling is a simplest lifestyle to lower the amount of environmental waste.     2     Check the regulations to ensure you use them properly. For instance, some places may no: accept glass, while others might require you to separate the different materials. If you dispose of something improperly, the whole load will likely be rejected and end up in a landfill.

Buy locally sourced foods.

3     Shipping products by truck, rail, flight, or boat creates pollution and goes against an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Instead, shop at local farmers’ markets and grocery stores stocking locally - sourced products. Alternatively, use community - supported services to get fresh produce regularly.

Cut back on driving.

Applying alternate forms of transportation consumes less gasoline. Walk or ride a bike whenever possible. If that isn’t an option, consider organizing carpools or using public transportation.     4     Also, combine multiple trips into one to help minimize the distance traveled and fuel consumed.

    5

Advocacy allows more people to create a positive impact. Spread the word about environmental conservation by sharing some of the lifestyle changes you’ve made on social media and in conversations with people around, calling on everybody to play a role.

A.Cut back your carbon footprint.
B.Encourage others to help save the environment.
C.By doing this, you help reduce traffic jams and the overall amount of gasoline consumption.
D.Every resident can get involved by taking advantage of nearby recycling services.
E.The topic of preserving natural resources entertains everyone.
F.Eating fresh, local food consumes less fuel and packaging materials.

5 . Wasting things is a nightmare (噩梦) for the environment, especially food waste, which does double harm to the environment. A plenty of resources go into the food and the food system also produces lots of greenhouse gases and pollution.

In our homes, restaurants, and food shops, 17 percent of all our food is thrown away—that’s about a sixth of all of the food we have. If you add on the food lost in production, about a third of all food produced never reaches a mouth. At the same time, nearly 700 million people were affected by hunger in 2019, while 3 billion still struggle to afford healthy food. It is mostly households that are to blame: 11 percent of the food ends up in the trash of our homes, compared to a mere 5 and 2 percent from stores and restaurants.

The reasons why food goes to waste are probably familiar to you: dinner party leftovers that never get eaten, food going bad before you cook it, or simply confusion over sell-by and use-by dates that leads to totally fine food ending up in the garbage.

The UN aims to cut food waste in half at the consumer and sale levels by late 2022. Luckily, there’s actually a lot we can do as individuals and governments can make policies to help people and the environment a lot. For individuals, something important is being more thoughtful and prepared when going to the grocery store. Make a list of meals you want to cook, and then only buy fresh produce that you will 100 percent be eating in the next few days. In social aspect, improving education on how to preserve food and understand tricky labels (标签), encouraging food recycling and pushing companies to sell smaller quantities of healthy, fresh food for one or two people could all play a helpful role in bringing down the massive pile of eatable waste.

1. Which of the following contributes most to food waste?
A.Food shops.B.Restaurants.C.Households.D.Food production.
2. What is partly responsible for food waste?
A.People eat less than before.B.The food price is low.
C.Food spoils easily during the summer.D.People are confused about the shelf life of food.
3. What is the author’s advice on how to deal with food waste?
A.Grocery stores should supply limited food.
B.People should raise their awareness of food conservation.
C.Everyone should consume as little food as possible.
D.Governments should distribute food resources fairly.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Health.B.Fashion.C.Environment.D.Science.
