1 . Online secondhand store thredUP has shown its tenth yearly Resale Report, which shows that the secondhand clothing industry is growing rapidly in the United States, as well as around the world. The secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026.

When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly experienced in what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Generation Z shoppers say they’ll pay more for the clothes that they know they can resell, and more than half of them resold clothes last year.

This is a much healthier opinion than storing out-of-style or ill-fitting clothes in a closet (衣柜). As resale becomes easier thanks to mobile technology and online stores, increasing numbers of customers hope to turnover their closets. This helps the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.

Buying or selling things secondhand helps to reduce people’s worry about the environment. As thredUP reported in 2021, buying or selling things secondhand reduces a product’s carbon Footprint (碳排放量) by 82%. It requires far less water to produce. Besides, it’s a good way to save money.

Aja Barber said in her book: “Clothing is produced at a fast speed, so it is important that resale become a key part of people’s lifestyles. Accepting reuse is not always easy when we are faced with many choices — many of which encourage the buying of cheap, single-use clothes-but the rise of online resale is enabling people to make different choices and do so with pride and joy.”

It’s great to hear that resale is being accepted by more people, which can help us save money while protecting our planet.

1. What can we say about secondhand clothing according to the report?

2 . For some people, walking or running outdoors is a great way to work out. However, seeing trash (垃圾) all over the ground is not so pleasant. Well, some people are doing something about it. They are plogging!

“Plogging” began in Sweden. The name combines the Swedish word “plocka,” which means to pick up, and the word Jogging, which means to run slowly. A Swedish man named Erik, started the movement in 2016. On the World Environment Day website, Erik says that he would ride his bike to work every day. Concerned about the amount of trash and litter he saw each day on his way to work, he took matters into his own hands.

In Sweden, many people who exercise outdoors have been doing plogging for years. Take Jeff Horowitz for example. He is a personal trainer in Washington, D.C. He often picks up trash while running outside. “I didn’t know it was a thing really. This is just my personal ethics(道德标准). where 1 go for a run and if I happen to see a piece of garbage lying around and it’s within reach - it is a kind of a little test for me to see if I can grab it and throw it in a near trash can without stopping. And it helps clean up the neighborhood,” he announced.

Today, plogging is an official activity, one that is becoming increasingly popular. Cities around the world now hold plogging events. “I would just hope people would think twice before dropping a garbage on the ground. And, it’s easy to put your garbage in the trash cans. I just think people should think about it a little bit more. I do hope one day there will not be a need for plogging.” said an interviewee.

4 . Wild beavers (河狸) are back! Experts say that the wild beaver families are doing well. The beavers are even boosting wildlife and the environment!

Over ten years ago, a family of beavers turned up in a part of the river Otter, in Devon. No one knew exactly where they came from. It was a big surprise wild beavers hadn’t lived in England for around 400 years!

In 2015, the government allowed the beavers to stay there as part of a test. They wanted to see if these animals could be reintroduced to the wild. The test ends in February. Some scientists from the University of Exeter already say the beavers help the wildlife in the area. One scientist called it “an amazing story”.

A lot of this is because of dams (水坝). Beavers build dams along the river. This creates deep pools in the riverbed and slows the water down. Scientists say this is perfect for many different types of plants and animals! Many plants are growing near the beavers. Different types of animals are also becoming more and more in the river. Beavers also help make flooding less, scientists say. The beavers’ dams slow down the speed of the river, especially after heavy rain.

Beavers aren’t the only animals that are being reintroduced to the wild! In 2019, red squirrels were brought back to an area of the Scottish Highlands. Further away, the world's rarest (罕见的) duck, the Madagascar pochard, is making a comeback. It was set free into the wild on the African island in 2019 and is doing well.

Who knows what other animals might be making a comeback?

5 . Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.

It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane (膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. It’s completely insipid so you needn’t worry about any taste.

It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention.

The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble (泡状物) or a unit of bubbles hasn’t been decided yet, but it costs about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months.

Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. It’s quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out for these bottles of the future.

1. How is most plastic in America dealt with?
A.It is wasted by people.
B.It is reused as new energy.
C.It is buried under the ground.
D.It is applied to new technology.
2. What does the underlined word “insipid” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Sweet.B.Delicious.C.Tasteless.D.Interesting.
3. What can we infer about the Ooho?
A.It plans to be sold at a very low price.
B.It has some advantages over plastic bottles.
C.It has taken the place of plastic bottles in London.
D.Proper materials of making Ooho are hard to find.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards Ooho’s future?
A.Doubtful.B.Uninterested.C.Worried.D.Positive.
5. Who might be the target readers?
A.Scientists.B.Experts.C.Environmentalists.D.The public.

8 . In a paper published recently in Nature Communications, the authors, including experts from China’s Tsinghua University, said that most of the current electricity demand in advanced, industrialized nations can be met by some combination of wind and solar power. “Wind and solar could meet more than 80 percent of demand in many places without crazy amounts of storage or additional generating ability, which is the critical point (临界点),”said co-author Steve Davis,UCI professor of Earth system science,“if we want to have a zero-carbon emission (排放) future without using fossil energy resources”.

The team analyzed 39 years’ worth of hourly energy demand data from 42 major countries to evaluate the adequacy of wind and solar power resources to serve their needs. They found that a full shift to sustainable power resources can be easier for lower-latitude (低纬度的) countries, which can rely on solar power availability throughout the year. The researchers highlighted Germany as an example of a relatively smaller country, in terms of land mass, at higher latitude which will make it more challenging to meet its electricity needs with wind and solar resources.

“Historic data show that countries which are farther from the equator (赤道) can occasionally experience periods during which there is very limited solar and wind power availability,” said lead author Dan Tong, assistant professor of Earth system science at Tsinghua University. “One recent occurrence of this phenomenon in Germany lasted for two weeks, forcing Germans to turn to dispatchable (可调度的) generation, which in many cases is provided by fossil fuel-burning plants.” Among the approaches the researchers suggested to alleviate this problem are building up generating capacity, developing long-term storage capabilities and pooling resources of multiple nations on a continental land mass to make the burden lighter to a certain country.

“Europe provides a good example to help people produce net-zero carbon electricity,” said Tong. “A lot of consistency and reliability could be provided by a system that includes solar resources from Spain, Italy and Greece with plentiful wind available in the Netherlands, Denmark and the Baltic region.”

1. What does Steve Davis imply by saying “critical point”?
A.Carbon emission will be reduced by using wind and solar power.
B.Electricity demand will be beyond human control in the future.
C.Electricity generating can be replaced by wind and solar power.
D.Fossil energy will be used with zero-carbon emissions in the future.
2. What can make a country rely on solar power all the year?
A.Having a large land of its own.B.Having a small population.
C.Being developed in all respects.D.Being located near the equator.
3. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Ease.B.Stress.C.Accept.D.Arrange.
4. What can we learn from Tong’s words in the last paragraph?
A.People can solve increasing energy demand in the future like Europe.
B.Most countries in Europe have a lot of solar resources to make electricity.
C.Europe has done a good job in producing net-zero carbon electricity.
D.Countries like Spain, Italy and Greece have plenty wind resources.

The film begins as a journey to film the largest animal on the planet, the blue whale. But during the journey the filmmakers make the shocking discovery of a huge, thick layer of plastic floating in the Indian Ocean.    2     In total, they visited 20 locations around the world during the four years to make the film.

In the film there are beautiful shots of the seas and marine life.    3     We see how marine species are being killed by all the plastic we are dumping in the ocean. The message about our use of plastic is painfully obvious.

4     In the second half, the filmmakers look at what we can do to deal with the problem.

They present short-term and long-term solutions. These include avoiding plastic containers and recycling as much as you can.The filmmakers also stress the need for governments to work more on recycling programmes.

We make a shocking amount of plastic.Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and at least 8 million of those are dumped into the oceans. The results are disastrous, but it isn’t too late to change.    5

A.This causes them to travel around the world to look at other affected areas.
B.Once you’ve seen the film, you’ll realize it is time to do our part.
