1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Last week, I went back to my hometown, which used to be a beautiful place, with green trees all over the mountains and a small river winding through the whole countryside in mind. I couldn’t wait to see my hometown, which I had always been dreaming of. The mountains, the trees, the river and the people there have always been in my mind these years.

While I was on the way to my hometown, I looked out of the bus window to enjoy the beautiful scenery at the same time. My hometown came nearer and nearer. However, I couldn’t believe something strange came into my eyes: all the trees along the road were gone and lots of sand was blowing in the wind! I wondered if I had taken a wrong bus. In fact, I hadn’t.

The bus finally arrived. I quickly got off, looking around the place I used to live in. Everything had changed!Trees were gone, leaving the bare mountains and a dry river. Seeing this, I couldn’t help bursting into tears. I rushed onto a mountain, trying to find a single tree there, but I failed. There was nothing but sand. I stood still, lost in thought. In the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. I was just wondering why people cut down all the trees and the river dried up.

It was not until the next day that I had a chance to talk with my grandfather, who had lived there for over eighty years. I expressed my puzzlement to him directly. “Well,” he said in a sad voice, “nobody here wants to cut down trees and make the river dry up, if possible. But all of us have no choice!” My grandfather continued, getting a little excited. “As the population grows larger and larger, people needed more food to feed themselves. They had to cut down the trees to make room for growing rice to make a living. Besides, people had to channel water into the fields. Day by day, trees were gone and the river dried up.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

It was a pleasant morning. Meena was leaning out of her window and feeding the birds. The roads were empty because of COVID-19 lockdown. Just then a strong blow of wind came and Meena saw something flying in the air from distance. “Is it a kite?” Meena thought. As it came closer, Meena saw that it was a mask.

Curious to know where the mask came from, she ran to catch the mask and finally ran to the beach nearby. The mask fell into the sea water. As Meena looked around, she saw many masks floating in the sea and lying on the beach. She wondered where they came from.

Suddenly Meena heard a low voice nearby so helpless as if crying out for someone for help. She went closer to the voice – it was a huge turtle from the sea, with something stuck into his mouth. Apparently the turtle was choking (噎住) and in great pain. Meena moved closer to him, without wasting any time pulling it out of his mouth – it was a mask! The turtle finally recovered from the pain and seemed to express relief from his eyes as if to say “thank you” for her kindness.

Meena was sad to see so many masks thrown around. Just then she saw a man dumping rubbish here, with many single-use masks poured out. “Stop!” she screamed. “Please don’t throw the waste here. The turtle might swallow the mask again and fall sick!” The man stopped at once. He was sorry for his actions and decided to help clean the beach. He called a few people from the village to help them clean it. In no time the beach was free of rubbish.

Meena was happy and couldn’t wait to go home and tell her mother about it. Her mother was very proud of her, and told her the importance of throwing single-use masks into a rubbish bin so that animals wouldn’t swallow them. Yet Meena was still worried. She didn’t want the turtles to fall sick again due to people’s ignorance.

3 . Your own backyard may be a fun place to play. You may have trees to climb, and insects to study.     1    . But did you know these things are related to each other through the food chain? Every part of nature belongs to a community where each member uses the lower members to stay alive.

Every part of the world has food chains, including the oceans and the deserts (沙漠).     2    , the whole chain could fall apart. The food chain is most disturbed (扰乱) by people because we build neighborhoods on the land where animals live and we pollute the environment. Both these actions make it difficult for other living things to survive. Still there is a lot we can do to protect the parts of food chains. Here are some ideas that can help:

3    . Make your backyard a place that other living things can enjoy. Plant more flowers and trees. And, most of all, try not to disturb the places where other animals live.

Do not pollute the environment. Recycle (回收) any material you can.     4    . Having fewer cars on the road means having better air for all of us to breathe.

Keep learning about and respecting (尊重) plants, animals, and the environment.     5    . You may even pass it on to your own children someday. It's important that as many people as possible protect nature and keep the food chain whole.

A.Share your space
B.If you ever want to see it
C.But if one part is taken away
D.We depend on each other for food and survival
E.Ride your bike or walk to places that you need to go
F.You can then pass this information on to your parents and friends
G.Maybe you hear birds singing or see your pet cat sleeping in the sun

4 . It was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible (看不见的), thus, given the unfortunate nickname "toilet bowl" . Now the Philippines' Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few months ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people.

The cleanup started on 27 January, when 5, 000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons (公吨) of garbage, marking the beginning of a nation-wide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.

During the first week of December 2018, Brooklyn- based Bounties Network collected three tons of garbage from Manila Bay every two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with a digital currency (数字货币) based on the Ethereum system.

For the mostly non-bank -using Filipino fishermen, this was a first-ever experience with a digital currency. It's one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity's waste.

There are signs that this recycling-for-digital payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver -based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a town in southern Luzon, the country's largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system.

That both these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country's contribution to ocean waste. A Wall Street Journal study in 2015 revealed that the Philippines make the third-largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.

6 . Ant Forest, a green initiative by the world’s leading payment and lifestyle platform Alipay, received the “U.N. Champions of the Earth” award, the UN’s highest environmental honor. It was given to Ant Forest for motivating half a billion people to adopt an eco-friendly and greener lifestyle, greatly contributing to ecological protection with the help of digital technology.

Alipay achieved this by inspiring its users to do environmentally-friendly things, such as walking, using public transportation, going paperless in the office and more to earn “green energy points”. These points can then be used to water and grow their own virtual young trees. After the virtual young trees have grown up on line, Ant Forest will plant real trees somewhere in China.

The number of Ant Forest users has reached 350 million, reducing 3 million tons of carbon dioxide. “Such programs are quite attractive to me. I feel satisfied to see a real tree planted just by doing some simple things such as riding bicycles and buying tickets online,” said an interviewee.

This initiative of Ant Forest is in line with the Chinese government’s strategy of a “Green Economy”. The country is taking aggressive actions in expanding its green coverage. Now, its efforts are paying off, with improved biodiversity and a healthier economic growth. Rare animal species have been spotted and forest parks are now popular attractions of tourism.

The planet is at a critical point which could result in natural disasters. It seems clear that unless governments, businesses and people form a focused team, it’s difficult to stop global warming. Fortunately, Ant Forest shows that it is possible to make joint efforts while relying on digital technology. And more initiatives are using technology to contribute to a sustainable future of the planet.

1. What was Ant Forest given the award for?
A.It brings convenience to people’s lives.
B.It is run by the world’s leading payment platform.
C.It technically assists many people to protect ecology.
D.It has made the greatest contribution to global development.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.How Alipay makes profits.
B.How Ant Forest is carried out.
C.What a low-carbon life is like.
D.Why Alipay takes up the initiative.
3. What can we infer from the text?
A.350 million people have planted real trees.
B.Promoting tourism can help save animals.
C.China keeps a balance between economy and ecology.
D.The expansion of green coverage mainly results from Ant Forest.
4. How does Ant Forest contribute to the sustainable future?
A.By criticizing natural disasters.
B.By stopping the global warming.
C.By providing a platform to make joint efforts.
D.By encouraging people to donate money to plant trees.

9 . Popping food into the microwave for a couple of minutes may seem harmless, and Europe's stock of these quick-cooking ovens give out as much carbon as nearly 7 million cars, a new study has found, and the problem is growing. With costs falling and kitchen appliances becoming frequently updated, owners are throwing many microwave after an average of eight years. This is pushing sales of new microwaves which are expected to reach 135 million annually in the EU by the end of the decade.

A study by the University of Manchester worked out the emissions of carbon dioxide-the main greenhouse gas responsible for climate change - at every stage of microwaves, from production to waste disposal (处理). “It is electricity consumption by microwaves that has the biggest impact on the environment,” say the authors, who also calculate that the emissions from using 19 microwaves over a year are the same as those from a car. According to the same study, efforts to reduce consumption should focus on improving consumer awareness and behaviour to use appliances more efficiently. For example, electricity consumption by microwaves can be reduced by adjusting the time of cooking to the type of food.”

However,David Reay, professor of carbon management argues that, although microwaves use a great deal of energy, their emissions are minor compared to those from cars. In the UK alone, there are around 30 million cars. These cars emit more than all the emissions from microwaves in the EU. Backing this up, recent data show that passenger cars in the UK emitted 69 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2015. This is 10 times the amount this new microwave oven study estimates for annual emissions for all the microwave ovens in the whole of the EU. Further, the energy used by microwaves is lower than any other form of cooking. Among common kitchen appliances used for cooking, microwaves are the most energy efficient, followed by a stove and finally a standard oven. Thus, rising microwave sales could be seen as a positive thing.

1. What is the finding of the new study?
A.The use of microwaves emits more CO₂ , than people think.
B.CO2 emissions pose a major threat to the environment.
C.The frequent use of microwaves may do harm to our health.
D.Quick-cooking microwave ovens have become more popular.
2. Why are the sales of microwaves expected to rise?
A.They have a shorter life cycle than other appliances.
B.They take less time to cook than other appliances.
C.They are getting much easier to operate.
D.They are becoming more affordable.
3. What recommendation does the study by the University of Manchester make?
A.Cooking food of different varieties.
B.Eating less to cut energy consumption.
C.Improving microwave users' habits.
D.Using microwave ovens less frequently.
4. What does Professor David Reay think of the use of microwaves?
A.It plays a positive role in environmental protection.
B.It makes everyday cooking much more convenient.
C.It will become less popular in the coming decades.
D.It consumes more power than traditional cooking.
