1 . When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.

Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble?

Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to actually do in reality.

Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends — our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.

Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be — it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.

But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile — and a smile is worth a lot.

1. What do we learn about the author?
A.He likes to be alone.B.He feels nervous lately.
C.He’s afraid of talking to others at times.D.He’s active in attending social events.
2. What’s the problem of Generation-Y in the author’s eyes?
A.They rely on the Internet to socialize.
B.They are less confident in themselves.
C.They have difficulty in communicating.
D.They are unwilling to make new friends.
3. Why do many young people avoid meeting new people?
A.They fear to disappoint their old friends.
B.They want to take time to do meaningful work
C.They are busy with their study.
D.They think it troublesome.
4. Why does the author write the text?
A.To tell about the importance of friends.
B.To encourage people to meet new people.
C.To give tips on how to meet new people.
D.To introduce the disadvantages of Generation-Y.

2 . Riding the bus to school could be keeping some kids out of class. Most school buses run on fuel. Those buses send out pollution, including tiny particles and gases. Bus riders get exposed to high levels of this pollution. When breathed in, it can lead to breathing problems, such as asthma (哮喘), which may keep kids home from school. But replacing the worst-polluting buses should cut down on student absences, a new study shows.

The study focused on schools that were asked to take part in a U. S. government program. The program offered schools cash back for money spent on cleaner school buses. The 2, 816 school districts in the new study all asked for the money. But not all got it. Only 383 were picked to receive funding. Winning districts could buy new buses and desert old ones.

The program started in 2012. From 2012 to 2017, the winning districts very likely had less bus pollution. And a year after getting new buses, student attendance had improved in those districts. For an average district of 10, 000 students, about six more students attended school each day in the winning districts. Districts that replaced the oldest buses had an average of 45 more students in school each day.

Those numbers may sound small, but they can add up, says Meredith Pedde, an environmental epidemiologist Almost 3 million U. S. kids ride school buses more than 20 years old, her team figures. Replacing all of those old buses could mean 1.3 million fewer student absences each year, the data suggest. And school attendance matters for student achievement.

Now the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a new program for school buses.   It’s offering $5 billion through 2026 to replace old fuel buses with cleaner ones. Almost all U. S. school districts can apply for the new rebates. But schools in low-income areas and in rural areas will get priority. Kids in these areas tend to face the most health risks from old buses, EPA notes. And anything that cuts air pollution, Pedde says, should improve student health.

1. What is the primary reason why riding the bus to school might lead to student absences?
A.Serious fuel shortage for school buses.
B.Lack of available seats on school buses.
C.High risk of disease spreading in a bus.
D.High levels of pollution from school buses.
2. What does Meredith Pedde suggest about the impact of replacing old buses?
A.It increases health risks for students.
B.It is a costly and ineffective measure.
C.It helps to improve student attendances.
D.It has no significant effect on absences.
3. What does the underline word “rebates” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A.Financial aids.
B.School posts.
C.Health benefits.
D.Public resources.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To describe the potential risk of school buses.
B.To talk about the use of cleaner school buses.
C.To discuss the importance of decreasing absence.
D.To call on the government to improve school buses.

3 . Nobody likes to fail. It makes people feel embarrassed and discouraged. What’s worse, it may cause major professional or personal trouble and lead to negativity. Basically, failure is no fun for most people. However, a vast body of research tells us that failure provides us with a chance to grow and develop, increases adaptability, and helps protect against anxiety.

It’s hard to change the mindset(心态) of a lifetime. But even if we still can’t get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids.

Christy Pennison, a professional consultant, says she works with an increasing number of kids and teens who show significant anxiety around a fear of failure. She said, “We want to protect our children, and we want them to live happy and meaningful lives, so we frequently tell them the harm of failure and ask them to avoid failure. The children experiencing internal and sometimes extenal pressure think they shouldn’t fail. Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don’t live up to a certain standard, or things don’t go according to the plans, they will feel upset and anxious.”

Pennison argues that failures, are often the hidden learning chances that can help people develop positive qualities, like persistence, focus, flexibility, patience, and positive self-image.

So what can parents do to help their children embrace(拥抱) failure instead of avoiding it at all costs? Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result. “This allows children to build confidence in themselves,” she explains. “Acknowledging the effort can give children permission to try new things without a fear of failure. And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset—‘I’d rather try and fail than not try at all.’ —helps them keep a belief in themselves, and expands their world of possibilities.” As Pennison points out, we all fail, but how we get up after we fail is what matters.

1. What aspect do most people focus on when thinking of failure?
A.The great courage to face it.B.The efforts made to handle it.
C.Unexpected benefits it brings.D.Unpleasant side effects it brings.
2. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?
A.Bring up the main topic.B.List the challenges in our life.
C.Add some background information.D.Stress the importance of the mindset.
3. What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph?
A.The causes of children’s anxiety.
B.Christy Pennison’s comments on adolescents.
C.The consequences of overprotecting children.
D.Christy Pennison’s experience in educating children.
4. Which of the following advice can help parents encourage kids to face failure?
A.Praise kids’ every achievement.B.Focus on the result of kids’ effort
C.Expand kids’ knowledge about the world.D.Encourage kids to make new attempts.

7 . You’re passed over for a job. Your back aches. Faced with difficulties large and small, you wonder if you’re an unlucky person. We turned to experts to understand why we believe in luck and how we can have that belief to make changes in our attitude towards life.

Richard Wiseman, a psychology professor, doesn’t believe there’s anything magical about luck — it won’t help you or hurt you. “On the other hand, considering yourself lucky or unlucky is a way of seeing yourself, which has an impact on how you behave and how you think, and becomes a self-fulfilling anticipation,” he says. “So, in a sense, it absolutely does exist.”

The sociology lecturer Vik Loveday interviewed academic employees who were on temporary contracts, an uncertain situation that caused anxiety. In general, when one of these academics learned about good news concerning their careers, such as getting a permanent job, they would attribute it to luck. Because they felt they had so little control, a move in a positive direction happened almost by accident, rather than as the result of hard work.

In a 2021 study, Professor Woolley has looked at this idea in children and adulthood. For example, basketball player Michael Jordan would wear his college practice shorts under his National Basketball Association uniform for good luck. “Obviously, it’s that the superstitious (迷信的) custom gives him confidence and then he plays better,” Woolley says.

Is it possible to change your attitude towards luck to get better outcomes? Wiseman believes some steps can improve your luck. He has found “lucky people not only maximize opportunities and know where they’re heading, but often they change course depending on how the wind is going”. Lucky people can also transform bad experiences to good. Specifically, you can shift your focus towards the positive by keeping a “luck diary”. Also don’t be a creature of habit. Watch a different TV program, speak to different people — even small shifts can be effective.

1. What does Wiseman say about luck in paragraph 2?
A.It might be wise to try one’s luck.
B.Luck is a magical force to control us.
C.The belief in luck influences our behavior.
D.People’s well-being is determined by luck.
2. What is the example of Jordan’s lucky shorts used for?
A.Confirming Loveday’s study.
B.Showing luck exists in real life.
C.Disapproving Woolley’s research.
D.Comparing different lucks in sports.
3. How can we improve our luck according to the last paragraph?
A.Getting into a routine.B.Sticking to a goal firmly.
C.Setting down terrible things.D.Making changes flexibly.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Less Anxiety, More Luck
B.Good or Bad Luck? Up to You
C.One Can Stay Lucky Through Life

8 . With the invention of the Internet, humanity is now experiencing an adventure toward technological advancement. Nowadays, technology assists us with everyday tasks such as driving, grocery shopping and even dating. Technology is so closely connected to our lives that it’s easy to overlook one important question: When technology really starts to control the world around us, what comes next?

Many experts and workers are scared that automation will take jobs from people who need them and give those jobs to robots. I understand their concern. However, if robots are outperforming us at our jobs, then what do humans have left to offer? We have the emotions and imagination that make us human. A machine might work faster than a person, but that’s because humans built the machines that way. That, itself, is an amazing accomplishment of the human imagination. We are talented, passionate creatures, who do not deserve to be trapped in miserable jobs anymore!

By now, I hope you’re curious to hear which occupations we should focus on in the future. The obvious answer is jobs in technology and robotics. Tech-related jobs will continue to be in big demand, and people who work in these fields will continue to become more important. We should be grateful to them for doing work to take us higher as a society. Besides, we should also focus on jobs in the arts and entertainment. It may sound crazy, but what could better reflect the creativity of the human mind than the arts? I believe technology has opened up our world, allowing us to share our imaginations with everyone!

So, we must ensure that future generations know that we mean it when we say, “follow your dreams.” Welcome to the 21st century: what a time to be alive! There has never been a better time to be yourself, and I can only see it getting even better from here.

2. According to the author, what role should robots play?
A.Emotional comfort.
B.Passionate companion.
C.Technological support.

9 . Back in April, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, made a dramatic attempt at a hostile takeover of Twitter, for a cool $44 billion. That’s a lot of money, even for a billionaire tycoon (巨头), and the takeover attempt quickly slid into court battles. But whoever wins (we’re not going to know for some time), I think the most interesting part of the story is the more fundamental question: why would Musk even want to buy Twitter in the first place?

If you look at the size of Twitter, its appeal isn’t obvious. The company makes a relatively small profit each year, and in terms of the number of users, Twitter is a relative minnow among social media networks. It has around 436 million users every month, which isn’t nothingbut is also a long way behind the likes of Facebook (near three billion), Instagram (two billion), and TikTok (one billion). So why does Musk want to spend a considerable slice of his own enormous fortune on a social network that not many people, in the grand scheme of things, actually use?

The answer might be what makes Twitter so interesting: what it lacks in revenue, size or growth potential, it makes up for in a much harder to define way. It carries absolutely enormous cultural power, and has an unrivalled ability to shape the news we read, the content we consume and the culture we live in.

1. What’s the author’s initial reaction to Musk’s takeover of Twitter?
A.Approving.B.Confused.C.Indifferent.D.Objective.
2. How does the author develop Paragraph 2?
A.By giving reasons.B.By answering questions.C.By making comparisons.D.By showing processes.
3. What can be inferred from the last sentence of Paragraph 3?
A.Compared with other social media, Twitter has its own value.
B.Twitter is as interesting and attractive as other social media.
C.Twitter will be even more successful than other social media.
D.Twitter’s profit will be much easier to measure in the future.
4. Why does the author write this passage?
A.To provide some background information about Musk.
B.To explore the motivation for Musk’s takeover of Twitter.
C.To inform people of Musk’s sudden takeover of Twitter.
D.To express his concern about the coming court battles.
