文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要讲述了在处于拥挤或可能发生踩踏的环境中,可以帮助避免潜在的致命后果的几种策略。

1 . There have been several incidents at some events in recent years where people died because of stampedes (踩踏).     1     Indeed, it’s a frightening situation to be in and circumstances may make it impossible to escape. But there are several strategies that could help you avoid a potentially deadly outcome.

·Don’t panic and conserve your energy

Panicking will not help you free yourself from a developing stampede. Stay calm and focused.     2     If a stampede occurs, you’ll need all the physical energy you can muster.

·Keep pace with the crowd

If the crowd is moving in one direction, it’s best to go with the flow.     3     If the group becomes too tightly packed, you could run out of air for choking.

·    4

One potential way to handle the situation is to shield yourself and allow the crowd to move past you. Look for a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar or a wall, or other places to hide: behind a car or even a lamppost.

·Guard your head

5     If you can’t, curl up on one side and protect your head. You do not want to be knocked unconscious in this situation.

Just remember to calm down, guard your head, and go with the flow of the crowd until you are able to safely escape.

A.Move away from barriers.
B.Find somewhere to protect yourself.
C.Yelling and screaming will tire you out.
D.You can use sign language to communicate with people around you.
E.If you happen to fall down in a large crowd, try to get up as quickly as possible.
F.Once you try to resist, the sheer density of the crowd behind you could crush you.
G.These may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede.

3 . House fires cause many deaths each year.    1    . So, it's important to teach them that fire is a tool, not a toy. Kids must understand that they'd better not play with fire. You should keep matches and lighters out of their reach.

A smoke alarm greatly reduces your chances of being hurt in a fire, especially when you are in your dream.     2    .   Also, you ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practice these plans in the dark with your family.

A smoke alarm warns you of the danger. When you hear it, take action immediately. When you come to a closed door, check it with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, there may be smoke or fire behind the door, so take care.       3       , call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn't go back in. Firemen know how to perform rescues safely.

4     . Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts about ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working. Every year the fire and rescue service is called to over 600,000 fires, which result in over 800 deaths and over 17,000 injuries.     5     .

4 . A rocket problem that forces astronauts to evacuate (撤退) may appear to be a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie. However, that is exactly what happened to Russian astronaut Alexey Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague.     1

The event happened shortly after the Soyuz rocket and its Soyuz MS-to space capsule (联盟号太空舱) carrying the astronauts took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.     2

The takeoff went off smoothly, but just 119 seconds later, officials from Russia’s space agency informed NASA the booster (助推器) had failed to separate from the capsule.     3     Instead, they were ordered to evacuate by separating the capsule and returning to Earth in what is known as a ballistic descent mode (弹道下降模式). The sharp drop is similar to free-falling from the skies and subjects astronauts to high levels of g-force.

4     They appeared to be in excellent condition when they crash-landed about 20 kilometers east of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, just 34 minutes after they stopped the task. Upon arrival, they were quickly found by the rescue team from Baikonur Cosmodrome and taken to the hospital for a quick check-up to ensure they had not suffered any injuries during their rough ride back to Earth.

It will take a few weeks for experts to determine what caused the problem of the usually reliable Soyuz rocket.     5     Hague, who was on his way to the space station for the first time later joked, “I imagined that my first trip to outer space was going to be a memorable one. I didn’t expect it to be quite this memorable.”

A.To their sadness, this event became a nightmare for their future space journey.
B.The two scientists were on their way to carry out a six-month task at the International Space Station.
C.Surprisingly, the harrowing event has not stopped Hague’s and Ovchinin’s wish to go to space.
D.Thus, the astronauts didn’t head to the International Space Station.
E.And luckily, they became the main characters of the movie about space exploration.
F.Fortunately, the “movie” had a happy ending with both scientists returning to Earth safely.
G.Fortunately, Hgue and Ovchinin had been well-trained for such emergencies.

5 . If you’ve made a routine of a daily walk, congratulations! You’re getting many benefits of a walk. But there’s one simple mistake that could be putting your life at risk. Almost 129,000 pedestrians were injured, and 5,376 were killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2015, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).     1    .

Luckily, there are some steps you can take to stay safe on foot. Sure, you drive on the right side of the road in the US, but that’s not where you should be as a pedestrian.    2    . Walking on a sidewalk can 100% guarantee your safety. But if you have to stay on the road, the CDC recommends walking toward traffic.

Seems like it couldn’t make much difference.     3    . Simply walking against traffic instead of with it cut the risk of getting hit by a car by an average of 77%, according to the findings.

4    . Well, if you walk the same direction you’d drive, the cars closest to you are coming from behind. That means you’d need to rely on the driver to see you and react if it’s coming up too closely. If the person behind the wheel is not absorbed, you could end up injured—or worse.

On the other hand, when you’re walking against traffic, you can see the cars heading toward you. Facing those vehicles lets you see danger coming and get out of the way if necessary, and you aren’t putting your life in the hands of every driver who passes.    5    . Or skip the busy streets entirely and learn to “mall walk” in the long corridors of shopping malls.

A.If there’s a sidewalk available, you should always use it
B.Where it is convenient and clear, make sure to take the route
C.Next time you go for a walk or run, face the traffic and keep watchful
D.You may be taken aback by such a big difference between the choices
E.Look backwards and forwards all the time when you walk along the traffic
F.This means one crash-related pedestrian death every 1.6 hours
G.But a study of car accidents between 2006 and 2010 would argue otherwise

6 . Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying.     1    However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.

Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.

Undo your seat belt.     2     Unfasten the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn’t going to wait for you to make the call.

3     Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car’s electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don’t think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.

Break the window. If you aren’t able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you’ll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counterintuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.     4

Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival.     5     While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you’re doing.

A.Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
B.Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
C.It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
D.Such accidents are particularly dangerous due to the risk of drowning.
E.In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F.This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
G.But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
