1 . A few years ago, I took a trip to New York City with my mom and my cousin. It was a girls’ weekend to celebrate my cousin’s upcoming wedding. We spent the morning shopping and stopped in a family-owned Italian restaurant. The woman who greeted us was the cook, and her elderly mother who'd started the restaurant was behind the counter (柜台). There were only five tables in the whole restaurant and we were the only customers.
We were chatting about what we wanted to do that night when my cousin suddenly stood up and pointed behind my mom and me. Black smoke started pouring from a staircase (楼梯) in the hallway that led to the businesses above that one. Thinking the floor above us must be on fire, my mom ran to the back to tell the cook, while we tried to convince the elderly Italian woman, who actually couldn’t speak English, to come outside. She couldn’t see the smoke from her place behind the counter and just scolded (训斥) us in Italian.
Finally, my cousin physically picked the lady up. Thankfully, she was a tiny lady and my cousin was strong. We got her outside and she finally saw the smoke. My mom took her phone out to call the firemen, but someone else must have already done that because we heard the sirens (警报声) coming. The firetruck rounded the corner, nearly hitting the front end of a cab. The passengers in the back of the cab started screaming, but the driver looked calm.
Thankfully, no one was hurt. We didn’t find out what had caused the fire, but at least it didn’t spread beyond the second floor. The cook thanked us for helping them, and her mother kept hugging my cousin. The rest days were peaceful compared to that day, and I’ve always wanted to go back and see if that restaurant was still there.

Finally，he found the girl and caught her into his arms． He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks． Turning， he fought through the smoke and ran blindly out of the house． Surrell put Tiara down on the porch． "You have to breathe for her，" Someone said to him． He started CPR﹣it was the first time that he'd ever done so． The women stood behind him， praying silently． After he gave five breaths， she opened her eyes and took a breath on her own．
Their eyes met． Surrell hugged her tight and said， "Uncle's got you．" Soon after， his throat closed off．

3 . When she was just 17 years old, Jerry crashed into the back of a truck that was waiting to turn in a left turn lane. The crash is a life-changing one for her. Because of the crash, she’s blind in one eye, lost her sense of smell, lost some of her hearing, lost the ability to create tears, and she cannot fall asleep naturally.
“Initially, I thought I would not be defeated but clearly I was completely wrong. Apart from the medical problems, the hardest part about my life after the car accident was the fact that I was alone.” Jerry said, “Everyone was away at college, I wasn’t. I couldn’t drive, couldn’t go to college. My friends who used to hang around with me were there for me at first, but after a while they stopped coming by.”
“I looked up on her Facebook page, and she said on there: Can anybody please hang out with me today? I don’t have any friends.” recalled Jerry’ s mother, Ketty.
In time, Jerry and her mother teamed up with the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make a video. They want to get the point across that texting while driving can have life-transforming consequences.
In the video Jerry appealed to drivers not to text while driving. She admitted she was checking and sending messages via her phone when she crashed her car into the back of the truck.
“Don’t text your loved ones when you know they’re driving,” said Jerry’s mother. “It can change their lives forever.”
“If you get a text, don’t look at it,” Jerry said. “It’s not worth it.”

"We can't go down into the well," they said."It's too narrow. So, we're going to drill a hole next to the well. Then we'll drill a tunnel across to Jessica. When we reach her, we'll bring her through the tunnel and up through our hole."
The men began to drill the hole at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 1987. The men had a difficult job; they were drilling through solid rock. During her days in the well, Jessica sometimes asked for her mother. Sometimes she slept, sometimes she cried and sometimes she sang.
All over the world, people waited for news of Jessica. Everyone worried about her.
At 8 p.m. on Friday, October 16, men reached Jessica and brought her up from the well. She was soon sent to hospital. Jessica was dirty, hungry, thirsty and tired. Her feet and forehead were badly injured. But Jessica was alive.
After Jessica's rescue, one of the rescuers made a metal cover for the well, saying,"To Jessica, with love from all of us."

5 . Time flies, but the tracks of time remain in books and museums. This is what made a recent tragedy in Brazil even more terrible.
On Sept.2, a big fire ripped through the National Museum of Brazil. “ Two hundred years of work, research and knowledge were lost, ” Brazilian President Michel Temer wrote on Twitter after the fire. “It's a sad day for all Brazilians.”
Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed. Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived, Time reported. Among all the items, there were Egyptian mummies, the bones of uniquely Brazilian creatures such as the long－necked dinosaur Maxakalisaurus, and an 11,500－year－old skull called Luzia, which was considered one of South America's oldest human fossils.
Besides these, Brazil's indigenous(本土的，土著的) knowledge also suffered. The museum housed world－famous collections of indigenous objects, as well as many audio recordings of local languages from all over Brazil. Some of these recordings, now lost, were of languages that are no longer spoken.
“The tragedy this Sunday is a sort of national suicide, a crime against our past and future generations,” Bernard Mello Franco, one of Brazil's best－known columnists, wrote on the O Globo newspaper site.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, as BBC News reported on Sept. 3. After the fire burned out, crowds protested outside the museum to show their anger at the loss of the irreplaceable items of historical value.
According to Emilio Bruna, an ecologist at the University of Florida, museums are living, breathing stores of who we are and where we've come from, and the world around us.
Just as underwater grass floats on the surface if it loses its roots, a nation is lost without its memories. The fire at the National Museum of Brazil teaches the world an important lesson: We should never neglect history.

6 . Electric Shock
Injuries caused by electric shock are fairly common. When a person has received an electric shock，no one should go near him/her until the current has been turned off.
If a shock occurring at work or at home causes someone to lose consciousness（知觉）, electrical connection must be broken before anyone tries to give assistance. You should either turn off the switch at the mains or，if that is not possible，push the person away with a dry piece of wood.
Treatment of Shock
Look out for signs of shock. People who have been injured or who may have lost a lot of blood, or those who have had heart attacks, may be in deep shock. The signs to look for are faintness, paleness, a moist，sticky skin, shallow, rapid breathing and a fast but weak heartbeat.
Shock can prove fatal, and it is essential to do something to prevent its developing. The best way to treat or prevent shock is to keep the patient lying down , better with the legs higher than the head；if possible，raise the lower part of the body on a rolled-up packet or similar object. Make the patient as comfortable as possible，loosening any tight clothing，and comfort him/her because fright increases the effects of shock.
