文章大意:本文是记叙文。本文讲述了Corion Evans和朋友晚上在河边散步时遇到一辆车落水,他和随后赶来的警察救了三个落水女孩儿的故事。

2 . It was around 11:30 p.m. Corion Evans was hanging out with his friends near the Pascagoula River in July when a car with three girls inside fell into it. It came to a stop some 20 feet from land, and then sank. The driver had blindly followed her GPS.

Evans and his friends got to the river’s edge. In the darkness, they could barely make out the girls holding on to the roof, the only part of the car still above water. But they could hear screaming. Evans pulled off his shirt and shoes, and then dived into the water, a river he knew alligators (短吻鳄) call home. He helped the first girl he saw, keeping her head above water and leading her ashore.

Just then, a man called out. Police Officer Garry Mercer arrived. He dived into the river to help another of the girls. But halfway back to shore, the girl had run out of her strength and went underwater, pulling Mercer down with her. Evans jumped back into the water and helped them until they could stand. “If he hadn’t been there, who knows?” Mercer said.

I just knew my last breath was coming at that time,” Watson said. “My mind said ‘You’re slowly losing yourself.’” She began to go under. Then, a touch. “Evans had caught me.”

3 . NEW DELHI—Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday inspected the bridge collapse site in the western state of Gujarat, where more than 100 people were killed, officials said. Ahead of the visit, Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Monday night during which he was briefed about rescue efforts.

The century-old British-era pedestrian suspension bridge (吊桥) collapsed on Sunday evening, with hundreds of people falling into Machchhu River in Morbi town, about 241 km west of the capital city, Gandhinagar. Reports said that 177 people were rescued and over 100 people were undergoing treatment at the Morbi civil hospital.

Soon after the bridge visit, Modi reached the civil hospital in Morbi to meet the injured. The prime minister was seen asking the survivors about their health. According to officials, search and rescue operations, carried out by teams of the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian navy, the Indian air force and the Indian army, were called off (取消) on Monday evening and began again on Tuesday morning. Officials said Modi also met with those involved in rescue and relief operations.

The local government of Gujarat has already ordered an investigation into the deadly collapse of the bridge. The bridge is a popular tourist attraction in the area. It was shut for renovation (整修) for seven months and was open for the public on Oct 26, the Gujarati New Year.

Reports said that around 500 people, much beyond its capacity, were on the suspension bridge at the time when it crashed into the river.

Police have arrested nine people including officials of Oreva, the company that carried out the repair work, ticket sellers and security men. However, the owners of the company have not been arrested. Oreva group is actually a Gujarat-based watchmaker company. Reports said that the watchmaker reportedly outsourced (转包) the “technical aspect of the renovation” to a smaller construction company, Devprakash Solutions.

Oreva has been accused of violating multiple safety rules, leading to the huge tragedy just four days after the bridge reopened to the public. Questions have been raised over why Oreva with no experience in construction was given responsibility for maintaining a bridge.

5 . A few years ago, I took a trip to New York City with my mom and my cousin. It was a girls’ weekend to celebrate my cousin’s upcoming wedding. We spent the morning shopping and stopped in a family-owned Italian restaurant. The woman who greeted us was the cook, and her elderly mother who'd started the restaurant was behind the counter (柜台). There were only five tables in the whole restaurant and we were the only customers.

We were chatting about what we wanted to do that night when my cousin suddenly stood up and pointed behind my mom and me. Black smoke started pouring from a staircase (楼梯) in the hallway that led to the businesses above that one. Thinking the floor above us must be on fire, my mom ran to the back to tell the cook, while we tried to convince the elderly Italian woman, who actually couldn’t speak English, to come outside. She couldn’t see the smoke from her place behind the counter and just scolded (训斥) us in Italian.

Finally, my cousin physically picked the lady up. Thankfully, she was a tiny lady and my cousin was strong. We got her outside and she finally saw the smoke. My mom took her phone out to call the firemen, but someone else must have already done that because we heard the sirens (警报声) coming. The firetruck rounded the corner, nearly hitting the front end of a cab. The passengers in the back of the cab started screaming, but the driver looked calm.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. We didn’t find out what had caused the fire, but at least it didn’t spread beyond the second floor. The rest days were peaceful compared to that day, and I’ve always wanted to go back and see if that restaurant was still there.

9 . Time flies, but the tracks of time remain in books and museums. This is what made a recent tragedy in Brazil even more terrible.

On Sept.2, a big fire ripped through the National Museum of Brazil. “ Two hundred years of work, research and knowledge were lost, ” Brazilian President Michel Temer wrote on Twitter after the fire. “It's a sad day for all Brazilians.”

Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed. Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived, Time reported. Among all the items, there were Egyptian mummies, the bones of uniquely Brazilian creatures such as the long-necked dinosaur Maxakalisaurus, and an 11,500-year-old skull called Luzia, which was considered one of South America's oldest human fossils.

Besides these, Brazil's indigenous(本土的,土著的) knowledge also suffered. The museum housed world-famous collections of indigenous objects, as well as many audio recordings of local languages from all over Brazil. Some of these recordings, now lost, were of languages that are no longer spoken.

“The tragedy this Sunday is a sort of national suicide, a crime against our past and future generations,” Bernard Mello Franco, one of Brazil's best-known columnists, wrote on the O Globo newspaper site.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, as BBC News reported on Sept. 3. After the fire burned out, crowds protested outside the museum to show their anger at the loss of the irreplaceable items of historical value.

According to Emilio Bruna, an ecologist at the University of Florida, museums are living, breathing stores of who we are and where we've come from, and the world around us.

Just as underwater grass floats on the surface if it loses its roots, a nation is lost without its memories. The fire at the National Museum of Brazil teaches the world an important lesson: We should never neglect history.

1. What can be summarized as the main idea of the 3rd and 4th paragraphs?
A.Long history of South America.B.Remains from the fire.
C.Mysteries to be solved.D.History and knowledge burned up.
2. What opinion may be shared by Bernard Mello Franco and the protesters?
A.The government is to blame for the tragedy.
B.The museum should be rebuilt
C.The loss can't be made up for.
D.The criminal should be sentenced to death.
3. What does Emilio Bruna compare museums to?
A.Living stores of our past.B.Underwater grass.
C.The oldest fossils.D.National suicide.
4. What may be the best title of the passage?
A.Death of a civilizationB.Functions of museums
C.Gone with the fireD.Brazilians' memories

10 . Electric Shock

Injuries caused by electric shock are fairly common. When a person has received an electric shock,no one should go near him/her until the current has been turned off.

If a shock occurring at work or at home causes someone to lose consciousness(知觉), electrical connection must be broken before anyone tries to give assistance. You should either turn off the switch at the mains or,if that is not possible, push the person away with a dry piece of wood.

Treatment of Shock

Look out for signs of shock. People who have been injured or who may have lost a lot of blood, or those who have had heart attacks, may be in deep shock. The signs to look for are faintness, paleness, a moist, sticky skin, shallow, rapid breathing and a fast but weak heartbeat.

Shock can prove fatal, and it is essential to do something to prevent its developing. The best way to treat or prevent shock is to keep the patient lying down , better with the legs higher than the head;if possible, raise the lower part of the body on a rolled-up packet or similar object. Make the patient as comfortable as possible, loosening any tight clothing, and comfort him/her because fright increases the effects of shock.

1. What would happen if you didn’t turn off the current when you had to treat an unconscious person who had just received an electric shock?
A.He would regain his consciousness soon.
B.He would die soon.
C.Electrical connection would be broken.
D.You would be in danger of getting the shock yourself.
2. Match the pictures with the passages.
A.Picture 2. Electric Shock; Picture 3. Treatment of Shock
B.Picture 1. Electric Shock; Picture 4. Treatment of Shock
C.Picture 4. Electric Shock; Picture 2. Treatment of Shock
D.Picture 3. Electric Shock; Picture 1. Treatment of Shock
