Debra, a five-year-old cousin of mine, often annoyed me. She wished me to stay with her, talk to her and teach her dancing. I hated it and never taught her to dance. That hot July afternoon, Debra annoyed me again.

Our big family all gathered together at a friend’s outdoor wedding. The children were running around and playing games. The afternoon couldn’t have been better. My friends and I gathered together and excitedly talked about our up-and-coming freshman year. Debra desired to join us, but what could a five-year-old kid contribute to our conversations?

I left the table where we were sitting, leaving behind my mother, my grandmother and Debra. I walked inside the house and greeted everyone inside before making my way to the bathroom. As I was washing my hands, there was a big knock and the bathroom door burst open. It was an older cousin of mine, Sylvia. With a look of fear, anxiety and shock, she rushed to find towels. I figured one of the kids was injured while playing. “There has been a bad accident outside,” she told me and rushed out.

What kind of accident? Was anyone hurt? I left the bathroom. A woman approached and told me that a guest who was leaving the party had lost control of his car. Then I heard a voice calling my name. It was my mother. She told me, “Debra has been badly hurt. Come and help rescue her!” My heart dropped to my feet. I was struck by the sudden thought that I might lose her.

I hurried outside. Tables and chairs were overturned everywhere by the runaway car. I was in shock. My mother quickly drove our car around and laid down the backseat. But where was Debra? I saw her parents running from a room with a piece of board, perfectly Debra’s size. I didn’t see my tiny cousin until she was put onto the board and laid in the car, crying. Her new white dress had blood, and on her left shoe was a tire (轮胎) mark.

After staying at home and taking care of her baby for nearly two years, Rebecca found it hard to make a decision between accepting an attractive offer from her former employer and going on looking after her son Tony at home. She talked, with her husband David, about sending Tony to a childcare center. David gave it a careful thought and decided to leave his job for a year to take care of Tony before he could be sent to a kindergarten, promising to be a super Dad and househusband. It was good news for Rebecca but she knew her husband too well. It would take David some time to get used to finicky(细致的) jobs of taking care of Tony. So she told David she wanted hourly updates on how Tony was handling his day away from Mom.

David was adapting quickly. He texted updates throughout the day, getting hourly instructions from Rebecca. It seemed that David was enjoying his new role and Tony liked the company of Dad, although they often got the home messy. What Rebecca didn’t expect is that David became famous on social media as Super Dad, because people liked watching the videos he posted.

One day, he sent his usual text updates and included a photo of Tony in his car seat during their trip to Walgreens. Rebecca’s reply was to correct Tony’s position in the car seat. And she reminded David that the straps(肩带) were too loose and the chest clip was too low. David laughed at his nagging(絮叨的) wife and rolled his eyes before tightening the car seat and fixing the chest clip. Fifteen minutes later, Rebecca’s phone rang with a call from her husband, “Honey, we had a car accident. We are fine, but the car is going to be totaled(彻底毁坏).”

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a hot day. The sun scorched (炙烤) down and everywhere you looked, you could see the heat waves blowing above the sand. John rolled over, realizing that half of his body was well and truly burnt. He had not meant to sleep in the sun but the heat and late nights studying for his examinations made him miserable. Stretching, he got to his feet, picked up his surfboard and looked around. The beach, which had earlier been crowded in the sun, was now comparatively empty. Seagulls flew down to clean up the food of people’s picnic lunches.

The ice-cream van had gone, and so were the lifeguards who were doing first aid on the beach. John looked up to where the sun was and estimated it was about five o’clock. Time to head home. It was “Mum’s Kitchen Rule” that had him moving homewards. If he did not get home in time for dinner, he would go hungry. Wandering along the water’s edge, he happened to glance out to sea. What made him look up at that particular moment, he never knew, but it was the right time for the swimmer he spotted. His hand was up, signaling distress (险情) and he was calling out something.

Quickly John glanced around the beach — no one else was close enough to help the man, and crucially, no one had noticed. Cupping his hands to his mouth, he shouted “Help” to get the attention of other people on the beach. Someone waved back to him and John pointed to the swimmer. “Get help,” he shouted. Then without hesitation, he jumped into the sea with his surfboard. John was a strong swimmer and had a good skill for distance swimming. His coach had tried hard to persuade him to go into competitions but he was not interested.

Life is wholly unpredictable. No one can be entirely sure what will happen from one moment to the next. Sandy, a US policewoman, was on the high way in Hanover County, Virginia, traveling to the airport. She was going to take on a fight to Ohio, where she was looking to carry out a special duty.

While Sandy drove her car smoothly, something unexpected happened. The vehicle in front of Sandy, for some unexplained reason, ran out of the roadway at full speed. With the brakes never hit, the car hit a tree badly. Sandy, who witnessed the crash, stopped and approached the vehicle. She wondered whether the driver was OK in such an accident. From the broken window, Sandy saw there were three persons in the vehicle: a mother and her two young children.

“As I approached the car, I could hear a lady screaming, ‘Help! Help! My children are there!’” Sandy recalled. The car was damaged seriously and Sandy found it really hard to open the door of the vehicle. Some smoke began to appear. It seemed that the vehicle might get on fire or, even worse, explode at any moment. After she was finally able to open one of the vehicle’s doors in the back, Sandy noticed the two children totally panicked, shaking all over. And the mother who was stuck in the seat was still screaming, “Help please! Get my babies out of the car.”

Sandy sprang into action. She freed the two children from the vehicle and got them to a safe area, away from the crash scene at once. When she was sure that the two children were not injured so seriously, she let out a deep breath.

Paragraph 1

One of the children asked Sandy, “Are you going to save my mommy?”

At a moment’s notice, quick thinking can save lives. Nothing illustrates this better than the story of 13-year-old hero named Dillon Reeves, who jumped into action when his school bus driver experienced a medical emergency, bringing the bus to a stop and avoiding what could have been a very tragic accident. Reeves’ parents expressed their pride at his actions.

“It’s an honor, said his dad Steve. ”I am a bus driver, too. Because of that, Reeves could probably know how to hold the steering wheel (方向盘) and step on the brakes. "

That day, Reeves came back home from school and was riding a school bus full of students in Michigan. And he sat in the fifth rows as usual.

The school bus driver has ten years of driving experience, and during these years, he has never had a driving accident. He held the steering wheel confidently, and he stepped on the brakes carefully. All the students were chatting as usual. Everything went smoothly.

A few minutes later, Reeves noticed something was off, but others didn’t feel anything wrong at the beginning.

The bus driver felt lightheaded and said on the intercom (对讲机), “I am going to pullover for a moment. Hearing that, students thought the bus would stopped in a certain parking area.

However, the bus didn’t make it to the pull-off area, and began to drift onto on coming traffic. Security camera footage showed the driver already lost consciousness. Seeing that, all the students shouted loudly and shook all over, feeling like sitting on pins and needles, but Reeves kept his head at that time and told himself he should take some actions quickly.

Noticing the danger of the situation, he knew it was time for him to do something.

After sixteen years of waiting, Brian finally got his driver’s license. Just about two months after receiving his license, Brian asked if he could take the family car and spend a day at the state fair with a friend. His parents agreed happily and wished him a pleasant trip. So with that, Brian pulled out of the driveway and waved goodbye to his parents.

Colin didn’t live far—maybe ten or fifteen minutes away. And it wasn’t long before both boys were on their way downtown to the fair. Their drive was on a winding two-lane road with a few small hills. They followed the road to the left, slowly curved back to the right, and then proceeded up toward the crest of a hill. All of a sudden, there was a crash. It all happened so fast.

“Are you OK?” Brian asked his buddy.

“I think so. What just happened?” Colin responded.

“We just had an accident.”

Slowly the boys began to regain their senses. Brian unbuckled(解开) his seat belt and stepped outside to assess the damage. It looked as if the entire left side of the car were one big dent(凹陷). The windows on the driver’s side were in a thousand pieces, and the doors were crunched. Soon the police arrived and surveyed the scene. The police dealt with the accident quickly, then they let all people leave and go back on their way.

The fair was unthinkable under the circumstances. Brain thought it’s best to get Colin home safe before making the journey to his own house. When they reached Colin’s house, Colin climbed out of the car and wished his shaken friend luck.

“Be honest to your parents and don’t worry. It wasn’t your fault.” Colin said, trying to be upbeat.

“I know... I think. But it’s not going to be easy to break this to them. It’s their car.”Brian pointed the car in the direction of his house and drove.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Milo is a rescue dog, adopted by 20-year-old Makayla Swift. But Milo the beagle is also a rescuer. One morning in November 2021, Swift opened her front door in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Milo took off running. Milo ran to the house across the street. He seemed unsatisfied with this house, so he ran to the one next door, Swift on his tail. He started scratching on the front door and Swift was thinking, “Why is he literally trying to break into her house?” She was embarrassed. Not everyone wants a strange dog on their property. But as she tried to drag Milo away, she could hear a sound coming through an open upstairs window. It was a voice yelling “Help!”

Hours earlier, around 4 a.m., 85-year-old Sherry Starr had risen from her bed. All of a sudden, standing there between the toilet and the tub, she slipped. She went down-hard-on the tile floor, and got stuck. Starr was scared of dying there. Her best bet, she decided, was to listen for the letter carrier in the afternoon and scream like the devils.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation. All the family members were happy. My parents planned to have a simple family celebration and prepared food for us to share.

While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing to the beach! All of my siblings (兄弟姐妹) agreed! It had been a long time since we went on an outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.

The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coolness of it. My siblings placed our stuff in a big cottage (村舍). They brought many foods and planned to cook fish and pork. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim. I couldn’t swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.

On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float on water and I enjoyed it! 1 made it move forwards and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn’t control the boat anymore.

The dramatic incident occurred during an afternoon hike. Four friends and teammates from Northwest College in Cody , Wyoming, had been hiking in the Montana national forest. As they hiked, a bear suddenly attacked the closest hiker Brady Lowry. “It shook me around and I didn't know what to do,” Brady recalled the terrifying attack. The bear shook him by the arm and then threw him away.

Brady's friend, Kendall Cummings, reacted quickly to try to scare the bear away. He yelled and kicked at the bear and pulled on the bear's fur. “I didn't want to lose my friend,” said Kendall.“I could have run and potentially lost a friend but I didn't do that. I thought I would get him off and save him.”

The bear turned its attention to Kendall and knocked him to the ground. In protecting his friend, Kendall became the target of the bear's forceful attack. Eventually, the other teammates scared the bear enough so that it soon withdrew and ran off.

After the attack, Kendall was badly injured, but he managed to pull himself up. The teammates then helped Kendall off the mountain by supporting his weight and carrying him part of the way. Once the boys reached a location with cell service, they dialed 911 for help.

After half an hour, some rescuers arrived at the scene. They examined Kendall and Brady and they were sent to Billings Clinic Hospital in a rush for their injuries. Brady broke his arm and suffered serious wounds in the initial attack. Kendall underwent surgery for more serious injuries on his face and arm. Both boys were on the road to recovery. Their wrestling coach, Jim Zeigler, arrived at the hospital along with the rest of the team to offer support.

When asked about why she chose to be a cadet (学员) firefighter, Ava Smith talked about her father’s action four months ago. “The girl he saved is going to live a whole life because of him. It’s incredible!” she said.

Jonathan Smith, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were driving on the 1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which spans (横跨) the shallow waters of Assawoman Bay.

Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the scream of tyres.

Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck (小卡车) was sliding from one lane to the other. It crashed into a barrier, turned around like endless, and came to rest hanging over the edge of the bridge. Smith hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but too late: he ran into a BMW directly ahead of him.

Smith stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was obviously shocked, but unhurt.

He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too terrified to speak.

And then another scream came from the pickup. The truck bed hung out past the railing (栏杆), about 10 meters above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door was pushed open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then ran to the railing. The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish to Smith. In the water was a car seat. Next to it was a girl, about two years old: pink dress, brown hair, brown eyes, floating on her back, kicking and shouting.

Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the baby girl rolled over onto her stomach. Smith waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t. Maybe he was in shock.
