文章大意:本文主要介绍了环境5R规则。

It is important to learn how to protect our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us.

Reduce: If you want to reduce the waste, you should use things wisely. A large number of trees are cut down to make paper. If everyone uses paper wastefully, soon we would not have any trees left. So it is necessary to reduce the waste.

Reuse: You should always think of reusing the able things before throwing them away. For example, we should buy reusable forks and knives instead of ones we throw away. Bring cups to the coffee shop and cloth bags to the store. Give your clothes you do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

Recycle: Recycling uses less energy and fewer resources (资源). Bottles, cans (罐子) and paper cups can be easily recycled. They can be remade into the same thing or new things.

Recover: When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten (腐烂的) ones, you have two choices: one is to throw the whole apple away, or you could cut off the rotten parts and eat the good parts. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.

Repair: If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it. If you want to change for better ones, it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after repairing them.

Learn the rules to protect our environment. Let’s try our best to make the earth cleaner and more beautiful.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了如何在学习中取得成功。

①Everyone wants to be successful in their study. But how to do that? Here are a few things you can do to make yourself successful.

Make your study a priority. Successful students always make study their priority. That is, they always put their study before other activities. If you have an important exam and feel not well prepared, you should probably give up the big party two days before it. This doesn’t mean you can never do things you like, but you should always put study at the top of your to-do list.

Work honestly. This means you should work on your own and avoid copying or cheating. Cheating won’t get you anywhere. It may seem like a shortcut at first, but will finally get you into trouble in your study. When it comes to life, this can lead to some bad influence on you.

Stay focused (专注的). Successful students stay focused on the task. Once you start working, get rid of your phone, your TV, storybooks, etc. If you need to study for a long time, for example, one hour or so, you can take a break to refresh your mind. But the break does not have to be long —5 to 10 minutes is enough. Don’t turn it into an hour long break with only 10 minutes of studying.

If you want to be successful, you should ask questions when you have them as well as answer your teacher’s questions. Be an active member of group activities. Taking notes is also important. Not only will taking notes help you study later, but doing so will also keep you engaged in the classroom. Taking notes can help you have a better understanding of what you’re learning as well.

⑥There are many other things you can do to be successful. As long as you set your goal and hold on to it, you will succeed!

13. To “make your study a priority”, which of the following should you do first?
A.watch a movieB.play with friends
C.help parents do houseworkD.get ready for the test
14. The underlined phrase “get rid of” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.pay attention toB.take care of
C.keep away fromD.pick up
15. Which of the following can be put on “ ”?
A.Make a plan.B.Learn to relax.
C.Take an active part in class.D.Develop an interest in what you learn.
16. How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2…)
A.B.C.D.

2023 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Prizes

The Natural History Museum in London holds a yearly competition for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Here are some of the     31     (good) photos this year and the stories behind them.

The top prize this year was won by Laurent Ballesta from France for his photo of a Tri-spine horseshoe crab (三次鲎) that was followed by three small fish. The crab moves around on the sea floor, looking for food. The fish follow along, they hope     32     (eat) anything the horseshoe crab misses.

Tri-spine horseshoe crabs have been around for over 300 million years.     33     now they’re in danger. That’s because of     34     (pollute), overfishing, and the fact that much of their living area has been lost.

Agorastos Papatsanis from Greece won the Plants and Fungi (真菌) Prize for his picture of a mushroom releasing its spores (蘑菇释放孢子). Spores are similar to seeds. They can spread easily and create new mushrooms.

Mr. Papatsanis went out to the forest in the rain to take     35     (he) photo. He had to protect the camera carefully as he waited to get the perfect picture. One of the judges described his photo as a “fairytale scene”.

Bertie Gregory     36     (take) long boat trips near Antarctica to take the photo that won the prize for Mammal Behavior. His picture shows two kinds of     37     (animal) “communicating” in a way that’s not often seen.

The seal (海豹) hopes to stay safe on the ice. But the whales work together to make the seal back     38     the water. They swim rapidly toward     39     ice all at once, and that creates a wave that can wash the seal off.

In addition, the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year is a separate competition. The photos     40     (divide) into three groups according to age: 10 and under, 11—14 and 15—17.

Robots Are Now Teaching English!

Get ready. Robots are about to enter our classroom. From Korea to Japan to the United States, schools are putting English-speaking robots in front of their students. In Korea, robots are the new teaching assistants in a number of preschools. The young students say that the robots are fun, but are these children really learning anything?

I don’t think a computer will ever be able to do what a teacher does. Each student is different and a teacher needs to change his or her teaching method to meet the needs of different students. I don’t believe that a computer will ever be able to do this even though the big data (数据) is widely used in the world.

Sara says:

In my opinion, schools should spend money training human teachers rather than buying robots. Research shows that children learn more from real speakers than from recorded conversations.

Keiko says:

I don’t think you can learn a language without real human interaction (互动). After all, robots cannot think as humans do.

Hassan says:

Robots might help people to learn a language, but I don’t think they should replace teachers because robots are just machines without human feelings.

Nancy says:

I think robots might be very helpful in the classroom. A child might be less afraid to make a mistake in front of a robot than in front of a real person.
