One example is the northeastern state of Connecticut. It has invested $70 million to put young people and adults through short-term training programs that can lead to good paying technology jobs.
The programs are known as “non-degree skills training.” They have helped people like Mohameth Seck, who left college after two years. Seck said he wanted to work in technology but the classes he was offered in a traditional college program “weren’t really interesting”to him. He also said traditional college takes too long to finish.
So Seck decided to enter a one-year computer training program run by a nonprofit organization. Today, the 25-year-old teaches computer coding at a skills training center, or academy, in Stamford, Connecticut. Eck said friends who finished the program also have good jobs.
Research carried out by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce showed that people who do get a college degree earn about 84 percent more over their lifetimes. But not everyone can get into, pay for or do well in college.
David Soo leads an organization called Jobs for the Future. He said the college model that has been in place for the last 40 years does not work for everyone. And this is especially true for students who are Black, Hispanic (拉美裔美国人) or whose families do not make a lot of money. “We need to find a better way to serve those students.” Soo said.
Anthony Carnevale is the leader of Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce. He said that while job training is good, it is not 100 percent correct to tell people they cannot benefit from a college degree.
One reason companies might hire college graduates is because they think they might have better communication and teamwork skills.
1. What did Seck think of the training program?A.Boring. | B.Time-consuming. | C.Rewarding. | D.Demanding. |
A.Some students can’t afford to go to college. |
B.Some students are incapable of getting into college. |
C.The programs offer more choices to lead to a good job. |
D.People cannot benefit from a college degree. |
A.Minority and poor families. | B.Everyone in America. |
C.African-American students. | D.College graduates. |
A.Expanding in size. | B.Being given more financial support. |

The Lab2Moon competition, held by TeamIndus, is offering students the chance to secure a spot on the TeamIndus rocket this year.
Taking craft beer to the next level, the students want to test whether it’s possible for yeast (酵母) to work and create beer on the moon. However, they believe the experiment is not just a creative concept for astronauts, it’s also important for the development of drugs and yeast-containing food, like bread.
“The idea started out with a few laughs among a group of friends, ” said Neeki Ashari, a fifth-year bioengineering student at UC San Diego. “We all appreciate the craft of beer. When we heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would appear on India’s moonlander, we thought we could combine our hobby with the competition by focusing on the practicality (可行性) of yeast in outer space. ”
The preparation work for the beer — up to the stage of adding yeast — will all be done on Earth, and rather than separating the fermentation (发酵) and carbonation stages of making beer, the team plans to combine them.
This removes the need to release CO2 accumulated in the process, which may result in cleanliness and safety issues out in space.
If selected, Team Original Gravity will be the first to make beer in outer space, and the fermentation will take place in a vessel no bigger than a soda can.
All teams competing for the place will showcase their ideas in Bangalore, India.
Sadly, you won’t be enjoying moon beer in your local craft beer bar anytime soon, as no samples will be brought back. However, this small experiment could provide important data on just how practical it is for us to make and create our own resources on other planets and moons by learning how consumables behave in different environments.
1. How did the students feel when they got the chance to design the experiment?A.Excited. | B.Nervous. |
C.Confident. | D.Casual. |

D.Its process was adapted to make it safer and greener. |
A.It seems like a pipe dream. |
B.It’s extremely complicated. |
C.It’s meaningful and hopeful. |

Did you know that unintentional injury(意外伤害) is the main cause of death in children under 14 years old and with a third of them happening in the home? One of the top reasons a child under the age of three will visit an emergency room is because of household injuries and sadly, 70% of children who die from unintentional injuries are under the age of four. Every room in the home will have its own set of child safety problems. Two of the main danger zones are the kitchen and the bathroom.
Before I became a young mother, I crawled(爬) around the house on my hands and knees to see things from a child’s perspective(视角). You would be amazed at what you can discover by doing something so simple. We didn’t have toilet covers. A child is top heavy because their heads are bigger than their bodies and can easily fall into the toilet.
You might be surprised with the number of children falling out of windows every year, especially during the summer months. Something as simple as a child leaning against a window screen can result in a serious injury. The best way to prevent this type of injury is by setting up a child safety window guard.
As parents, we do the best we can by providing as much protection as possible to make sure of the safety of children. And as there are so many products(产品) out there to help us do this, there is nothing like good old-fashioned supervision(监护). So, use common sense and products that help to keep your child safe, and you will have provided a safe environment for your children.
1. What’s the main reason for death in children under 14 according to Paragraph 1?A.Age problems. | B.No sense of safety. |
C.Danger areas. | D.Unexpected injuries. |
A.To cover the toilet slowly. |

C.To look for something interesting. |
D.To discover danger from a child’s point. |

Eli Gutierrez and Isabella Bacciarini are both 17-year-old students in the USA. Along with some other students, they’re seeing what it’s like to work in the coffee business.
The school principal Jack Carr once suggested that being able to serve drinks at a comfortable area would “be great”. So, Gutierrez and his friends came up with the idea of Cafe Vine.
In order to manage the coffee business well, Gutierrez took a one-month online course. After he had learned from professionals, Cafe Vine attracted many customers.
Given the success of the business, Gutierrez realized he needed help at the cafe. So he started teaching skills to other students, who could make up their community service hours by serving coffee.
“I actually run a business,” said Bacciarini, a junior at String Theory High School and manager at Cafe Vine. “Being a girl, We always been told it’s usually a guy who opens a business.”
After becoming the manager and roaster (烘焙师) at the cafe, Gutierrez started to use his new skills after school at other coffee shops. And a surprise visit in the spring to Cafe Vine by David Wagaman, president and owner of Capriccio Management, led to another opportunity.
“I said to him, ‘It would be a good idea for you to buy our coffee beans,’” Gulierrez said. Bags of coffee beans from Cafe Vine are now available (可获得的) to buy at all three Capriccio cafes.
While lie’s helping the business in its early stages, Wagaman said he is also benefiting from the school’s coffee start-up.
“It’s helped us find qualified employees,” he said. “It’s not just a job. They feel worthy.”

An American scientist has found that using aspirin (阿斯匹林) increase the temporary (暂时的)hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment using a number of students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great.

【推荐3】Although most people believe that owning a business or working on an idea means you are an entrepreneur (企业家), the reality is that entrepreneurship is so much more than just these two things. It is about the ability to innovate (创新) by helping society progress. For those who aspire to become real entrepreneurs, the path to turn your thought into entrepreneurship is one that requires you to know yourself.
Recognize what skills you are good at. Everybody wants money. But many fail to realize that money is the extension ( 延伸) of your skills, so the most important aspect of learning to make money starts by knowing what skills you have. Make a list of your skills and you should see where your strengths lie. The goal with this exercise is to recognize what skills you are good at naturally. Make good use of them until you finally change more of your skills into usable abilities for your business.
Make use of your confidence to create belief. Confidence is a result of repeating one thing. The more you practice doing something, the more confident you become in the process needed to see it to the end. Starting a business requires confidence, so most people who have zero confidence in the process fail to get started because it is an unknown area. You have to believe in the idea, the process and the ability within yourself to bring your business project to life. Without confidence, belief doesn't exist; without belief, the chances of giving up are high.
Allow your love to become enthusiasm. The last ingredient outside of your skills and confidence is the ability to focus on ideas that you feel enthusiastic about. Having passion will push you to struggle for something you love and turn that longing into action. The goal is to identify topics of interest so that you can start showing some aspects of passion as you start your project. The closer a project is to your heart, the less pessimistic you will become when results don't go your way.
1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A.It is very difficult for us to know our skills. |
B.Knowing your skills is the first step to learn to make money. |
C.To recognize your skills will surely make your business successful. |
D.To recognize your skills is more important than making money. |
A.It can help us find out what we love. |
B.It can make us never feel pessimistic. |
C.It can push us to work hard on our goals. |
D.It will make us succeed in whatever we are doing. |
A.The advantages of confidence. |
B.The ability to focus on ideas. |
C.Why people want to be an entrepreneur. |
D.How you can go from ideas to an entrepreneur. |
